For such Converts being <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most hypocritical sort <lb xml:id="l7"/>of men, &amp; under profession of Christianity retaining their old heathen <lb xml:id="l8"/>vices &amp; their inclination to all kinds of superstition, they were still <lb xml:id="l9"/>heathens in reality thô in profession Christians, &amp; may deservedly <lb xml:id="l10"/>be called <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">Synagogue of Satan who say they are Iews</hi> (<choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> is <lb xml:id="l11"/>Christians) <hi rend="underline">&amp; are not but do lye</hi>.</p>
<p xml:id="par3">The visions of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> woman &amp; Dragon are a prophetical history <lb xml:id="l12"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fall of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heathen religion &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rise of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> apostacy in its room <lb xml:id="l13"/>&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> fall was on this manner.  Dioclesian A.C. 302 raised a per<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l14"/>secution of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> whole Church <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was far greater then all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> for<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l15"/>mer persecutions taken together &amp; lasted in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> western Empire two <lb xml:id="l16"/>years &amp; in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eastern ten.  In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> end of this persecution Constantine <lb xml:id="l17"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great was converted to Christianity, &amp; at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same time by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l18"/>conquest of Maxentius became Emperour of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> West.  Licinius <supplied reason="omitted" cert="high">who</supplied> was <lb xml:id="l19"/>now Emperour of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> East &amp; still vexing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church but not vio<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l20"/>lently for fear of Constantine, endeavoured by treachery to cir<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l21"/>cumvent Constantine &amp; make himself Emperour of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> whole: <lb xml:id="l22"/>whereupon a war arose between them, &amp; Constantine overcame, <lb xml:id="l23"/>&amp; then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> flourishing of Christianity brought in great numbers <lb xml:id="l24"/>of converts.  Now all this is thus designed in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prophesy.  <hi rend="underline">The <lb xml:id="l25"/>woman</hi> [or Church] <hi rend="underline">in heaven <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Child</hi> [of a Christian Empire] <lb xml:id="l26"/><hi rend="underline">cried</hi> [in this persecution of ten years] <hi rend="underline">travailing in birth and <lb xml:id="l27"/>pained to be delivered</hi> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del>. For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mystery of ini<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l65"/>quity <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> then worked could not grow to any maturity for want of <lb xml:id="l66"/>hypocrites to work upon: but after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heathen religion <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> thus <lb xml:id="l67"/>withheld <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> revelation of this mystery, was taken out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l68"/>mystery no longer wanting a fit people to work upon must begin to grow <lb xml:id="l69"/>proportionally to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> increase of hypocrites, &amp; so as in a short time by <lb xml:id="l70"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prevailing of such fals Christians to be reve<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>led.  For in a dayly <lb xml:id="l71"/>flow of such converts into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches, it could not be but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> in a <lb xml:id="l72"/>few years <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hypocrites would be more then double or tr<del type="over">eb</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ip</add>le to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <pb xml:id="p003r" n="3r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknown">3</fw> sincere; not to say more then ten or twenty times their number.  Now <lb xml:id="l73"/>by this influx of fals converts <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mystery of iniquity grew in these <lb xml:id="l74"/>respects.</p>
<p xml:id="par4">First <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mixture &amp; allay of such converts soon <lb xml:id="l75"/>became very corrupt in manners.  They <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> please to read <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> book <lb xml:id="l76"/>of Salvian <foreign xml:lang="lat">De Providentia Dei</foreign>, an <choice><sic>Auth<del type="cancelled" hand="#in">e</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no" hand="#in" cert="high">c</add>r</sic><corr>Author</corr></choice> very sober cordate &amp; <lb xml:id="l77"/>pious will find <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> within less then an hundred years after Con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l78"/>stantines victory, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Christians all over <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Empire, <del type="strikethrough">so far as his <lb xml:id="l79"/>information reacht</del> were grown as much <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">or more</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no" hand="#in">more</add> debaucht in <lb xml:id="l80"/>manners (whoring, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">sodomy, blasphemy, covetousness, voluptuousness</add> drinking, swearing, lying, <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">gaming, <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">cheating</unclear></del></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">backbiting, malice</add>, <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no" hand="#in">fraud,</add> <lb xml:id="l81"/>injustice, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">rapine</add>, oppression) then even <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> barbarous <del type="strikethrough">nations &amp; old heathens, <lb xml:id="l82"/>&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> various sorts of</del> heretical Christians.  This Salvian shews <lb xml:id="l83"/>to satisfy his readers <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> God was just in subjecting <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l84"/>violence &amp; dominion of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">less wicked &amp;</del> barbarous Nations who in <lb xml:id="l85"/>year 407 invaded <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Western Empire.  <del type="blockStrikethrough">And if you will be at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pains <lb xml:id="l86"/>to compare <del type="over">w</del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>im <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> what you may find to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same purpose scattered <lb xml:id="l87"/>up &amp; down in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ecclesiastical historians, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">Basil</add> Gregory Nazianzen, <lb xml:id="l88"/>Faustinus his <foreign xml:lang="lat">Libellus precum</foreign>, Ierom, Austin, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">Theodoret <foreign xml:lang="lat">De curandis Græcorum affectionibus</foreign></add> Guildas &amp; other <lb xml:id="l89"/>Authors of those times, as well concerning <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pride, ambition, <lb xml:id="l90"/>contentiousness &amp; other ill manners of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Clergy &amp; Monks, as those <lb xml:id="l91"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people; you will find sufficient reason to beleive <lb xml:id="l92"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Salvian wrote <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> truth impartially.  He wrote not in a peevish <lb xml:id="l93"/>way to accuse his age, but in a sober way to answer an objection <lb xml:id="l94"/>made by many of his own age about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> justice of God, &amp; to falsify <lb xml:id="l95"/>them by relating <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> matters of fact <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they to whom he wrote were <lb xml:id="l96"/>judges of as well as he:</del>  Nor is't a wonder <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Christians should <lb xml:id="l97"/>become so vicious in so short a time seing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most immoral of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l98"/>heathens would be most apt to turn Christians for interest, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l99"/>most ambitious Christians would seek most for preferment in the <lb xml:id="l100"/>Churches.  Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical history tells us <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Christians <lb xml:id="l101"/>between <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persecutions of Decius &amp; Dioclesian through a respite <lb xml:id="l102"/>of <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">30 or 40</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no" hand="#in">a few</add> years from persecution began to grow very corrupt <lb xml:id="l103"/>in manners: &amp; much more would they grow corrupt in a more <lb xml:id="l104"/>lasting peace when they were not only freed from persecution, but <lb xml:id="l105"/>flourished in riches &amp; honours &amp; dominion over <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world, &amp; were <lb xml:id="l106"/>dayly <choice><sic>allayed</sic><corr cert="high">assayed</corr></choice> &amp; corrupted by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> influx of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most hypocritical &amp; con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l107"/>sequently <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worst of heathens.  <del type="strikethrough">It may be said indeed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> manners</del> <pb xml:id="p004r" n="4r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknown">4</fw> <del type="blockStrikethrough">of Christians were corrected by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persecutions they suffered under <lb xml:id="l108"/>Constantius, Iulian &amp; Valens: but those sufferings wer<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> not much in <lb xml:id="l109"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> West &amp; but for a time, &amp; not directly for religion but upon accu<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l110"/>sations for various crimes <del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">(</add>as Basil <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">&amp; Gregory Nazianzen</add> tell<del type="cancelled" hand="#in">s</del> us of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sufferings under <lb xml:id="l111"/>Valens, &amp; Athanasius &amp; Hilary of those under Constantius) <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">&amp; therefore they reached but to a few.</add>  And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l112"/>same method was used by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vandals against <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans.  <lb xml:id="l113"/>For when he would persecute them he caused their sacred virgins <lb xml:id="l114"/>to be searched by mid<del type="over" hand="#in"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no" hand="#in">wi</add>ves, &amp; those who were found vitiated, to be <lb xml:id="l115"/>forced by tortures to confess who had layn <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> them, saying <foreign xml:lang="lat">Dicite <lb xml:id="l116"/>quomodo sacerdotes vestri concumbunt vobiscum</foreign>, &amp; then upon their <lb xml:id="l117"/>confession about four thousand of their Bishops &amp; Priests were ban<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l118"/>ished together as Victor <foreign xml:lang="lat">de Persecutione Vandalica</foreign> relates.  This <lb xml:id="l119"/>I mention in confirmation of what Salvian affirms of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans. <lb xml:id="l120"/>For he describes them <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> unchastest of all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> God's <lb xml:id="l121"/>judgment was conspicuous in subjecting them to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vandals who <lb xml:id="l122"/>were <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> chastest of all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Barbarians, &amp; by their laws had almost <lb xml:id="l123"/>made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans themselves chast.  And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> cruelty of Valens <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l124"/>Emperour &amp; those about him in causing 80 Presbyters to be burnt <lb xml:id="l125"/>together in a ship would afford us another notable instance, were <lb xml:id="l126"/>it not <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> I find in Gregory Nazianzien (who lived in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> times when <lb xml:id="l127"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> thing was done &amp; near <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> place <choice><sic>were</sic><corr>where</corr></choice> 'twas done) <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first report <lb xml:id="l128"/>was but of one Presbyter sentenced to be burnt with a ship at sea <lb xml:id="l129"/>&amp; of many people standing upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> shore to see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> execution done.  But <lb xml:id="l130"/>it may be pertinent to note <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> quick &amp; easy approbation of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> novel <lb xml:id="l131"/>definitions &amp; Sotadical verses of Arius, so as to make him in a l<del type="cancelled" hand="#in">a</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no" hand="#in">e</add>tter <lb xml:id="l132"/>to Constantine before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Council of Nice boast of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> multitude on his <lb xml:id="l133"/>side, &amp; Gregory Nazianzen (<choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> contemporary of Athanasius) beleive <lb xml:id="l134"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> almost all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> East about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> time were for him; also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heats of <lb xml:id="l135"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Bishops in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel of Nice may be noted &amp; their libelling one <lb xml:id="l136"/>another, so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> nothing could be done there till Constantine himself <lb xml:id="l137"/>presided in person; &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> presence of a Captain <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> his Soldiers at <lb xml:id="l138"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel of Tyre to prevent <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> like turbulent &amp; immoral beha<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l139"/>viour there, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> tumults in following Councels w<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">h</add>ere this method <lb xml:id="l140"/>was not used (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> made Gregory Nazianzen compare them to flocks <lb xml:id="l141"/>of <del type="cancelled">Sheep</del> Cranes &amp; Geese, to stout &amp; <choice><sic>pertinacius</sic><corr>pertinacious</corr></choice> Warriors &amp; stage<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l142"/>players who in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> habit of Bishops personate what they are not) &amp; <lb xml:id="l143"/>lastly <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> shamelesness of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Eusebians at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> infamous death of Arius <lb xml:id="l144"/>they notwithstanding so far prevailing &amp; outfacing it as to make</del> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight"><del type="blockStrikethrough">Gregory</del></fw> <pb xml:id="p005r" n="5r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknown">5</fw> <del type="blockStrikethrough">Gregory Nazianzen of opinion <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Athanasius (soon after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign <lb xml:id="l145"/>of Constantius) did first of any man discover by inspiration <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><sic>Diety</sic><corr>Deity</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l146"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Holy Ghost, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church in her more tender age not being able <lb xml:id="l147"/>to beare <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> revelation of so great a mystery, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> nothing did ever <lb xml:id="l148"/>so much shake <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> whole world as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> open preaching thereof, even <lb xml:id="l149"/>his own flock being thereupon disgusted.  Yet are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> circumstances <lb xml:id="l150"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> death of Arius to be corrected.  For 'tis certain <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he was <lb xml:id="l151"/>(upon retracting his novel language) admitted into communion at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l152"/>Councel of Tyre, &amp; it could not be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same party afterwards at <lb xml:id="l153"/>Constantinople, when he was already in their communion, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">would</add> go about <lb xml:id="l154"/>to admit him into their communion again, as if neither they nor he <lb xml:id="l155"/>had known of his being admitted into it before.  The story of his <lb xml:id="l156"/>death being kept secret till about twenty years after he was dead &amp; <lb xml:id="l157"/>then made known to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Egyptians by Athanasius (as I gather by <lb xml:id="l158"/>comparing two of his Epistles writ about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year 358, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> one to those <lb xml:id="l159"/>who live a solitary life, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other to Serapion) it might be easy for <lb xml:id="l160"/>him (or Macarius from whom he relates it) to forget a circumstance <lb xml:id="l161"/>or two: as he did also in his Apology in telling <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> story of <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hand of</add> Arsenius <lb xml:id="l162"/>in a bag <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> both he &amp; 300 Bishops of Egypt &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> West about twelve <lb xml:id="l163"/>or fifteen years before in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Counsel of Serdica told of a corps.  I <lb xml:id="l164"/>have made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> more particular mention of the<supplied reason="copy" cert="high">se th</supplied>ing<supplied reason="omitted" cert="high">s</supplied> because they were <lb xml:id="l165"/>early, &amp; shew <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> gradual declining &amp; verging of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> age to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> state <lb xml:id="l166"/>of immorality <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Salvian a little after describes.</del>  It would require <lb xml:id="l167"/>a large discourse to give a full account of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> manners of these times, <lb xml:id="l168"/>but I do not think it necessary: I shall content my self <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> two <lb xml:id="l169"/>or three passages out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> writers of those times.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">Gregory Nazianzen in his Oration Of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Bishops reprehends the<add place="inline" indicator="no" hand="#in" cert="medium">m</add> <lb xml:id="l170"/><del type="strikethrough" hand="#in" cert="medium">Bishops</del> as addicted to fals &amp; crafty perverting of right &amp; reason, con<lb xml:id="l171"/>tentious, proud, as to knowledge rude &amp; unskilfull, as to faith ready to <lb xml:id="l172"/>embrace either side being swayed by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> laws not of God but of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> times, <lb xml:id="l173"/>flatterers, Lyons to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> inferiour people &amp; fawning dogs to them in <lb xml:id="l174"/>power, studious of eating &amp; drinking well, &amp; mindfull not of what is <lb xml:id="l175"/>profitable but of what is gratefull to others, &amp; then he crys out: <hi rend="underline">O <lb xml:id="l176"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mystery of godliness, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is now propagated almost throughout the <lb xml:id="l177"/>whole world</hi>. He describes also how there was no care in electing Men <lb xml:id="l178"/>of deserts into Bishopricks, but any novice who could make an interest <lb xml:id="l179"/>was admitted: yesterday at play &amp; publick spectacles, at horsraces, at <lb xml:id="l180"/><del type="cancelled">publick orator</del> dancing-bouts, at revellings, a publick Orator, a civil Ma<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l181"/>gistrate, a soldier, to day created a Presbyter or Bishop.  Yesterday <fw type="catch" place="inline">a</fw><pb xml:id="p006r" n="6r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknown">6</fw> a Simon Magus (buying a Bishoprick) to day a Simon Peter.  And much <lb xml:id="l182"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same purpose he speaks in his Oration to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second general Councel, <lb xml:id="l183"/>&amp; in several of his verses.  And least you should think he did it out of <lb xml:id="l184"/>peevishness for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> loss of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Bishoprick of Constantinople, he touches <lb xml:id="l185"/>upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same immorality of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Clergy in his Oration, Of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> praises of <lb xml:id="l186"/>Basil, written about three years before: There is danger, saith he, <lb xml:id="l187"/>least <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most holy Order become most ridiculous.  For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Priesthood is ac<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l188"/>quired not so much by virtue as by evil-doing &amp; wickedness: nor are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l189"/>thrones of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most worthy but of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most powerfull. And <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">even then</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">fifteen years before</add> when <lb xml:id="l190"/><del type="cancelled">he was</del> upon his first return from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wilderness he was under his Father <lb xml:id="l191"/>made Bishop of Nazianzum A.C. 360 in his <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>pology or first Oration <lb xml:id="l192"/>(after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> middle of it<anchor xml:id="n006-01"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n006-01" resp="#in">p 33</note>) he is large upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> vices &amp; tempestuousness of <lb xml:id="l193"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> age wherein, saith he, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> members are at war one with another, &amp; <lb xml:id="l194"/>if there be any Charity yet remaining, it is departing; &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Priesthood <lb xml:id="l195"/>is an empty name, – &amp; we are all pious in this one thing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> we condemn <lb xml:id="l196"/>others of impiety – &amp; he is accounted best <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> can fasten most reproaches <lb xml:id="l197"/>upon his Neighbour. – We observe one anothers faults not to lament <del type="strikethrough">not</del> <lb xml:id="l198"/>'em but to expose 'em, not to cure 'em but to inflict new wou<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">n</add>ds, &amp; thence <lb xml:id="l199"/>draw excuses for our own vices.  Neither do we account Men good or evil <lb xml:id="l200"/>according to their lives but according to friendship or enmity &amp; what we <lb xml:id="l201"/>praise to day we dispraise to morrow, &amp; what we note for infamous in <lb xml:id="l202"/>others we admire in our selves &amp; easily pardon any wickedness in those who <lb xml:id="l203"/>embrace impiety.  Thus magnanimous are we in vice.  And all things are <lb xml:id="l204"/>in confusion like <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first Chaos, or like Men in a noctur<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">n</add>al fight <lb xml:id="l205"/>where they cannot know their Friends from their Enemies <add place="supralinear marginRight" indicator="yes" hand="#in">or in a sea fight &amp; storm wherein they perish<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> in great confusion by falling foul on one another</add>.  And as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people <lb xml:id="l206"/>is, so is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Priest &amp; so are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Nobles.  There are who quarrel about <lb xml:id="l207"/>trifles &amp; then engage parties, pretending <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> faith &amp; so profaning <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> holy <lb xml:id="l208"/>Name for private ends.  Whence it comes to pass <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> we are grown odious <lb xml:id="l209"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles &amp; (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is worst of all) we can give no reason why not <lb xml:id="l210"/>justly &amp; deservedly: &amp; even to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> more honest of our own party we are <lb xml:id="l211"/>infamous.  We are become a new kind of spectacle not to Angels &amp; Men, <lb xml:id="l212"/>but to almost all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wicked in all times &amp; places, in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Markets, in Feasts, <lb xml:id="l213"/>in <del type="cancelled">sports</del> pleasures, in mournings.  And now <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">also</unclear></del> we are also acted upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l214"/>Stages (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I speak almost weeping) &amp; are derided <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most impure &amp; <lb xml:id="l215"/>unchast; nor is there any s<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">cen</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">e</add> so pleasing to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ear &amp; eye as when a <lb xml:id="l216"/>Christian is comically exposed.  Also in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same Epistle before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> middle <lb xml:id="l217"/>describing how novices every where were exalted in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church, he saith; <lb xml:id="l218"/>We are so ill affected <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most of us (not to say all) almost before we <lb xml:id="l219"/>cast off our first hair, &amp; cease to babble like Children, before we enter <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">into</fw><pb xml:id="p007r" n="7r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknown">7</fw> into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> divine Courts, before we know so much as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> names of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Books of <lb xml:id="l220"/>sacred scripture, before we know <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Characters of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old &amp; new Testaments <lb xml:id="l221"/>or <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Authors (for I do not yet say before we have washt away <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> spot <lb xml:id="l222"/>of our Sins) if we have learnt two or three pious words &amp; those not by <lb xml:id="l223"/>reading but by hearing alone, or if we have learnt to sing a Psalm or <lb xml:id="l224"/>two or to contract a cloak well or put on a Monastic girdle a little for <lb xml:id="l225"/>a shew of piety (O <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> chief seates &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> high-mindedness!  For Samuel <lb xml:id="l226"/>was <del type="cancelled">fitly</del> holy from his cradle,) we are presently Wisemen &amp; Masters <lb xml:id="l227"/>&amp; sublime in divine things &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> chief among <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> scribes &amp; Lawyers, <lb xml:id="l228"/>&amp; ordain our selves heavenly men &amp; affect to be called Rabbi; nor is <lb xml:id="l229"/>there any thing spoke literally in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Scriptures, but all things are to <lb xml:id="l230"/>be understood mystically, &amp; if for this we be not praised &amp; extolled <lb xml:id="l231"/>we are angry.   These are <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> manners of those who have most of good<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l232"/>ness &amp; simplicity among us.  For those who are more spiritual &amp; generous, <lb xml:id="l233"/>much condemning us &amp; vexing us &amp; accounting us triflers of no value, <lb xml:id="l234"/>depart from us despising our communion as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> communion of Men not <lb xml:id="l235"/>pious.  Thus Gregory of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> early age.  In his other writings <lb xml:id="l236"/>he describes a <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">v</add>ehement contention between <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eastern &amp; western Churches, <lb xml:id="l237"/>both in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel of Constantinople (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> in his Epistle <del type="cancelled"><foreign xml:lang="gre"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">πασ</unclear></foreign></del> to Olympius<anchor xml:id="n007r-01"/><note place="marginRight" resp="#in" target="#n007r-01">Epist 77</note> <lb xml:id="l238"/>he calls <foreign xml:lang="gre"><del type="cancelled">πα</del> πάσης ἀνατολικης κὶ δυτικης σύνοδον</foreign> an universal Councel <lb xml:id="l239"/>of both <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Eastern &amp; Western Churches) &amp; before &amp; after.  And being af<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l240"/>terward invited to Synods he wrote in a letter to Saturninus: <anchor xml:id="n007r-02"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n007r-02" resp="#in">Epist 72</note>All things <lb xml:id="l241"/>by Gods blessing are well <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> us, this one thing excepted, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> we are anxious <lb xml:id="l242"/>&amp; sollicitous about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churches so filthily at variance.  Reduce 'em if <lb xml:id="l243"/>you can by any means to concord seing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Bishops meet again: for it is to <lb xml:id="l244"/>be feared again least we now be shamed if this Synod has no happier an <lb xml:id="l245"/>end then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> former.  <del type="cancelled" hand="#in">[Epist. 72]</del>  And to Procopius;<anchor xml:id="n007r-03"/><note place="marginRight" resp="#in" target="#n007r-03">Epist 55</note> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he never saw a <lb xml:id="l246"/>happy event of any councel, they increasing rather then averting evils.  <lb xml:id="l247"/>For saith he, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> contentious &amp; <choice><sic>desires</sic><corr cert="high">desirous</corr></choice> of dominion are pertinacious <lb xml:id="l248"/>beyond what can be explained by my words.  <del type="cancelled" hand="#in">[Epist. 55]</del>  <anchor xml:id="n007r-04"/><note place="marginRight" resp="#in" target="#n007r-04">Epist 80</note>And to Theodorus <lb xml:id="l249"/>Bishop of Tyana: That he declined coming to Synods &amp; conferences <lb xml:id="l250"/>ever since he found many of them (to speak sparingly) wicked &amp; <lb xml:id="l251"/>flagitious.  ‡<addSpan spanTo="#addend006v-01" place="p006v" startDescription="f 6v" endDescription="f 7r" hand="#in" resp="#mjh"/> ‡ In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel of Nice there was such traducing &amp; libelling one another <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l252"/>nothing could be done till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Emperor Constantine came himself in person <lb xml:id="l253"/>&amp; moderated.  And therefore in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel of Tyre to prevent <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> like <lb xml:id="l254"/>discords ordered a Prefect to be present there with a band of soldiers at <lb xml:id="l255"/>hand.  And in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> following Councels where <unclear reason="damage" cert="medium">t</unclear>his method was not taken, there <lb xml:id="l256"/>were such doings as Gregory describes.  Which made him in his poems compare <lb xml:id="l257"/>the<del type="cancelled">m</del> convening Bishops to Cranes &amp; Geese &amp; pertinacious warriors &amp; profane <lb xml:id="l258"/>stageplayers only drest in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> habit of Bishops.<anchor xml:id="addend006v-01"/> <del type="cancelled" hand="#in">[Epist 80]</del> These ecclesiastical feuds &amp; calamities so much <lb xml:id="l259"/>complained of by Gregory &amp; others of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same kind are mentioned <lb xml:id="l260"/>by Socrates in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> preface to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fifth book <del type="over">in</del><add place="over" indicator="no">of</add> his Ecclesiastical History <lb xml:id="l261"/>as judgments of God upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> age for their wickedness.  And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> like manners <lb xml:id="l262"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Western Bishops amongst themselves, Sulpitius Severus (who wrote about <lb xml:id="l263"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> yeare 400) makes this mention. <foreign xml:lang="lat"><anchor xml:id="n007r-05"/><note place="marginRight" resp="#in" target="#n007r-05">Sulp. For if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> degenerating Romans <lb xml:id="l301"/>were so bad in their times, they were wors in his. Amongst <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Goth's <lb xml:id="l329"/>a fornicator is not tollerated, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans only (by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prejudice of their <lb xml:id="l330"/>Name and Nation) excepted.  Almost all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans do these things <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">of</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> it <lb xml:id="l331"/>is hard to find but a few Barbarians guilty.  To Salvian I might add <lb xml:id="l332"/>Gildas &amp; other Authors: but I shall rather confirm their testimonies <lb xml:id="l333"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> matter of fact in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> following instances.</p>
<p xml:id="par6">Victor in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second book of his history of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vandalick persecution relates <lb xml:id="l334"/>how <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> when <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> King of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vandals was minded to persecute <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans <lb xml:id="l335"/>he caused their sacred Virgins to be searched by Midwifes, &amp; those who <lb xml:id="l336"/>were found vitiated to be urged by questions &amp; tortures till th<del type="over" hand="#in" cert="high">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no" hand="#in" cert="high">e</add>y had <lb xml:id="l337"/>confessed who had layn <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> them saying, <hi rend="underline">Tell us how your Bishops &amp; <lb xml:id="l338"/>Clergymen lye <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> you.  For</hi>, saith Victor, <hi rend="underline">he endeavoured to find a way <lb xml:id="l339"/>to begin <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> persecution <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he made</hi>.  And thereupon were 5000 Bishops <lb xml:id="l340"/>Priests &amp; Deacons &amp; other Members of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> African Church sent at <lb xml:id="l341"/>once into banishment.  Now as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Vandals designed by this means to <lb xml:id="l342"/>blemish <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> African Church, so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans laboured on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other hand <lb xml:id="l343"/>to purge themselves by celebrating all these both Virgins &amp; others for <lb xml:id="l344"/>Confessors <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">or</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> Martyrs.  For whilst Salvian tells us <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans were <lb xml:id="l345"/>abominably unchast &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> unchastest of all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Romans, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <supplied reason="omitted" cert="high" source="f 4r">God's judgment was manifest in making</supplied> the <pb xml:id="p010r" n="10r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknown">10</fw> Vandals lord over them <del type="over" hand="#in"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">up</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">wh</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">o</add> were <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> chastest of all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Barbarians, &amp; by their <lb xml:id="l346"/>laws had almost made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans chast: I leave <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Reader to consider <lb xml:id="l347"/>whether <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Africans were not guilty of a double crime, unchastity in <lb xml:id="l348"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Virgins &amp; those who were banished, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> patronizing of unchastity by <lb xml:id="l349"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest who celebrated such for holy Men &amp; confessors: a practise <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l350"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Church has ever since followed in sanctifying those who suffer <lb xml:id="l351"/>by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hand of justice when ever she thinks it her interest to do so.</p>
<p xml:id="par7">Basil &amp; Gregory Nazianzen while they speak much of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persecution <lb xml:id="l352"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Emperor Valens, they sometimes let fall words from whence it ap<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l353"/>pears <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persecution consisted in punishing Men not directly for religion, <lb xml:id="l354"/>but upon accusations of various crimes.  Now in an age wherein all men <lb xml:id="l355"/>(as Nazianzen &amp; <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Austin saith) <del type="strikethrough">so wicked,</del> accused one another, &amp; few <lb xml:id="l356"/>justly excused themselves, how far <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> objected crimes were true or <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wit<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l357"/>nesses fals I cannot determine.  But be it as it will <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> immorality of <lb xml:id="l358"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> one side or <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other or both is hence argued, &amp; if either party was <lb xml:id="l359"/>then grown immoral, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> other scarce continued vertuous.</p>
<p xml:id="par8">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> end of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reign of Constantius, The Egyptian Christians assembled <lb xml:id="l360"/>in a Church of Alexandria resisted &amp; beat <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Emperors Soldiers sent <lb xml:id="l361"/>against them &amp; hung up their arms in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">in triumph</add>, &amp; sent about a letter <lb xml:id="l362"/>to stir up <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people to their assistence, saying <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> they had already resisted <lb xml:id="l363"/>unto blood. (all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> you may see in their letter extant in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> works of <lb xml:id="l364"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Athanasius) &amp; then <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">being</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no" hand="#in">were</add> overcome by fresh supplys of Soldiers &amp; <lb xml:id="l365"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ringleaders taken &amp; sentenced for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> disturbance, some to imprisonment <lb xml:id="l366"/>some to be whipt, some to death: <add place="supralinear marginRight" hand="#in" indicator="yes">The greatness of this sedition Hilary in his book against Constantius written in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> last year of that Emperor thus describes: <foreign xml:lang="lat">Adest mecum Alexandria tot concussa bellis, tantum commotorum expeditionum pavens tumultum.  Brevius enim adversum Persam quàm adversum eam armis certatum est.  Mutati Præfecti, electi duces, corrupti populi, commotæ legiones ne ab Athanasio Christus prædicaretur.</foreign> So long as this war lasted against <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> city so long you may be sure <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> City was in arms against their Emperor.  And such was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spirit of <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">E</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add>ese Egyptians, that when Valens would have expelled Athanasius again, he durst not for fear of a new war.  Now</add> it seems to me a <add place="supralinear" hand="#in" indicator="yes">very</add> great argument <lb xml:id="l367"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> levity <add place="supralinear" hand="#in" indicator="yes">&amp; corruptness</add> of those times, first for <del type="cancelled" hand="#in"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">some</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Alexandrine</add> Christians to behave themselves <lb xml:id="l368"/>so <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">tumultuously</del> <add place="infralinear" hand="#in" indicator="no">seditiously</add> &amp; then for <del type="strikethrough">others to celebrat<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ing</add></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">the Churches of that age <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to</add> patronize &amp; encourage such doings by celebrating all</add> those for Martyrs &amp; Con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l369"/>fessors <del type="cancelled" hand="#in">in being</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no" hand="#in">who were</add> punished for it. For Athanasius <lb xml:id="l372"/>two <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">or three</add> years after speaking of these <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in">&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">following</del> sufferings of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Egyptian <lb xml:id="l373"/>Bishops</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes" hand="#in">things</add> &amp; of some new stir in Egypt, <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">(</unclear></del>made (if I guess right) at <del type="strikethrough" hand="#in"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> decree <lb xml:id="l374"/><del type="cancelled" hand="#in">of</del></del> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no" hand="#in">some news about</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Councel of Ariminum<del type="cancelled">)</del>, writes thus: <hi rend="underline">Be it so,</hi> saith he, <hi rend="underline"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> against <lb xml:id="l375"/>Athanasius &amp; other Bishops <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they have sent into banishment they <lb xml:id="l376"/>could feign fals pretexts of crimes; yet what will they say to this <lb xml:id="l377"/>new kind of evil</hi>.
