<p>Not by Newton and certainly not in his hand (though described as 'autograph' in the Sotheby catalogue): according to Westfall ('Newton's Theological Manuscripts', 142) it is in that of John Wickins, his Cambridge room-mate from some time after 1663 to 1683, in which case the document presumably dates from that period (but it may of course be a copy of an older work). The piece is strongly anti-Roman Catholic in tone and reads the prophecy as foretelling the downfall of the Papacy in <hi rend="italic">c.</hi> 60 years.</p>

<p xml:id="par1">That <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Papists for some years past haue had &amp; stil continue in a firm <lb xml:id="l1"/>persuasion that they shall ere long suppresse all parties disagreeing from them, <lb xml:id="l2"/>is c<choice><orig>ō</orig><reg>om</reg></choice>monly obserued by those who converse much <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> them; why they should <lb xml:id="l3"/>doe so at this time more then formerly, since they pretend not to any pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l4"/>hecy for it, must be from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> knowledg they haue of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> present <lb xml:id="l5"/>posture of affairs in Europe and some <choice><abbr>acco<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>account</expan></choice> they haue that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> present Powers <lb xml:id="l6"/>governing therin are more then formerly favourable to their party.</p>
<p xml:id="par2">Many who are not of their Religion think them not mistaken in the <lb xml:id="l7"/><choice><sic>present present</sic><corr>present</corr></choice> posture of affaires, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> must be acknowledged to look very favourably <lb xml:id="l8"/>on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> design &amp; hopes of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Papist in general, in order to this haue been <lb xml:id="l9"/>all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> troubles <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> of late haue afflicted Germany, fflanders, Holland, England <lb xml:id="l10"/>&amp; other parts. But that the design, if it prevail for a time, will not long <lb xml:id="l11"/>continue, is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> opinion of many, who yet differ very much in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reasons <lb xml:id="l12"/>on <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they ground the same.</p>
<p xml:id="par3">It may therfore be worth enquiry what advantages Popery may yet <lb xml:id="l13"/>obtain, &amp; on what grounds any expectation may be built of its not conti<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l14"/>nuing long in case for a time it should further prevail then now at <lb xml:id="l15"/>present it doth.</p>
<p xml:id="par4">In order hereunto it ought to be considered that although God hath <lb xml:id="l16"/>promised <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> gates of Hell shall not prevail <choice><abbr>agt</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> his Church, yet <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Christians <lb xml:id="l17"/>had very early notice that there should happen an Apostacy from the true end &amp; <lb xml:id="l18"/>design of Christianity, that should long prevail in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world. This appears from <lb xml:id="l19"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 2 Epist. to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Thess: cap 2. where the Church is admonished not to look for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l20"/>day of Christ as at hand, for that day shal not come except there come a falling away <lb xml:id="l21"/>first &amp; that man of Sin be revealed, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Son of perdition, whom <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord shall <lb xml:id="l22"/>consume <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spirit of his mouth &amp; shall destroy <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> brightnesse of his <lb xml:id="l23"/>coming. vers 2. 3. 8.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">It is further in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same place declared that although <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mistery of iniquity <lb xml:id="l24"/>did then already work yet he was then letted &amp; should be so untill <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lett was <lb xml:id="l25"/>taken out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way, And then shall that wicked one be revealed &amp;c. and its further <lb xml:id="l26"/>observable that the Apostle tells <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Thessalonians, yee know what <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>holdeth, that <lb xml:id="l27"/>he might be revealed in his time.</p>
<p xml:id="par6">ffrom all this it appears <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> persecutions of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church whilst in her wildernesse condition <lb xml:id="l28"/>was to be under <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mystery of iniquity, that man of Sin who opposeth &amp; exalteth himselfe <lb xml:id="l29"/>under Heathen Rome or others whilst <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire continued in its glory, because <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">besides</add> this <lb xml:id="l30"/>the Roman Empire had no lett, nor could be called Apostate, neither it nor any other Pou<lb xml:id="l31"/>uer any erroneous opinion at that time hath continued untill this day, wheras <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apostacy <lb xml:id="l32"/>under the mystery of iniquity was to continue till very near at least Christs second <choice><sic>com<lb xml:id="l33"/>co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing</sic><corr>coming</corr></choice>, the Son of Perdition being to be consumed by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spirit of his mouth and destroyed <lb xml:id="l34"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> brightnesse of his comeing.</p>
<p xml:id="par7">What this Mystery of iniquity is, what was its working already in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Apostles times <lb xml:id="l35"/>who that man of Sin &amp; Son of perdition is shall be presently examined, but at present <lb xml:id="l36"/>let it be considered that what euer <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mystery be or whoeuer <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Person, it is now in being <lb xml:id="l37"/>it is yet to continue &amp; it hath been working euer since <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time – soe saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Scripture. <lb xml:id="l38"/>The mystery of iniquity doth already worke, when the lett <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> did <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>hold his being revealed shall <lb xml:id="l39"/>be taken out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way then he should be revealed whom <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord shall consume &amp;c.</p>
<p xml:id="par8">So long as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> allotted time for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> raign of this Man of Sin is unfullfilled no pre<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">va</supplied><lb xml:id="l40"/>lency of his ought to be strange but wee ought rather to admire the great mercy of God <lb xml:id="l41"/>who under this great Apostacy hath encouraged his Church by so considerable Reformations <lb xml:id="l42"/>as he hath made in many places, howeuer for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> unworthy carriage of his Church in s<supplied cert="medium" reason="copy">ome</supplied> <lb xml:id="l43"/>places he may suffer him euen there again to prevail, that being no more then w<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">hat</supplied> <lb xml:id="l44"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church hath before hand been appointed to expect.</p>
<p xml:id="par9">And therefore why England &amp; other reformed countryes may not again come under <supplied reason="copy" cert="high"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></supplied> <lb xml:id="l45"/>government of that man of Sin as well as other countryes haue done, who formerly w<supplied reason="copy" cert="high">ere</supplied> <lb xml:id="l46"/>reformed, or why <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> protestants here and elswhere, may not be reduced to great Straites<pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/> <fw type="pag" place="topLeft">2</fw> as well as those in ffrance &amp; Hungary &amp; elswhere so long as the time allotted for the <lb xml:id="l47"/>working of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mystery of iniquity is unfulfilled, is altogether unaccountable.</p>
<p xml:id="par10">And this is sufficient in general to shew that Popery if it be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mystery of iniquity, <lb xml:id="l48"/>may yet prevail in the world, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time allotted for its destruction not being yet come: <lb xml:id="l49"/>for although the Reformation may be termed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spirit of Christs mouth being regulated <lb xml:id="l50"/>according to his word &amp; it be evidente that <choice><sic>hath</sic><corr>he hath</corr></choice> in part consumed the man of Sin, yet <lb xml:id="l51"/>he still continues &amp; hath of late considerably prevailed <choice><abbr>agt</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> the Reformation in many <lb xml:id="l52"/> places &amp; may go further on untill <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> brightnesse of the Lords co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he <lb xml:id="l53"/>is to be destroyed.</p>
<p xml:id="par11">If it be questioned what this co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord is, Its answered that it is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second <lb xml:id="l54"/>co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing of Christ, the same as is mentioned luk. 21. v. 27. they shall see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Son of man <lb xml:id="l55"/>co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing in a cloud <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> power &amp; great Glory euen then when the times of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles be <lb xml:id="l56"/>fulfilled, v. 24. when the Redemption of Israel draweth nigh ver: 28 &amp; when the <lb xml:id="l57"/>kingdom of God is nigh at hand v. 31.</p>
<p xml:id="par12">The same is Math: 24.30. They shall see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Son of man co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing in the clouds of <lb xml:id="l58"/>heaven <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> power &amp; great glory the same Math: 24.64. Mark 13.26. &amp; Chap: 14.62. <lb xml:id="l59"/>The same was seen by Daniel Cha: 7. v. 13 – one like <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of man came <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> clouds of <lb xml:id="l60"/>Heaven to whom was given Dominion &amp; power &amp; a Kingdom <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> should not be destroyed. <lb xml:id="l61"/>the same foretold Rev: 1.7.</p>
<p xml:id="par13">Thus far is then clear that this son of Perdition shall be destroyed by the brightnesse <lb xml:id="l62"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lords co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing &amp; consequently till then he may prevail.</p>
<p xml:id="par14">When this shall be is hinted above in Luke when the times of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles be fulfilled <lb xml:id="l63"/>&amp; when the redemption of Israel draweth nigh &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdom of God <choice><sic>nigh</sic><corr>is nigh</corr></choice> at hand, the <lb xml:id="l64"/>same time as was revealed to Daniel. 12.7. whose finishing should be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> period of <lb xml:id="l65"/>those wondrous afflictions of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church &amp; of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> scattering the power of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> holy <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">temple</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">people</add> <lb xml:id="l66"/>the same time <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Iohns <choice><sic>Apolalyptical</sic><corr>Apocalyptical</corr></choice> Times of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> renewed Beasts blasphemy, reign <lb xml:id="l67"/>&amp; prophanation of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Temple &amp; city of God 42. months or 1260 dayes forasmuch as <lb xml:id="l68"/>the same Kingdom of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Lord Christ is the i<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ediate &amp; co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>on consequent to them all. <lb xml:id="l69"/>Compare then.</p>
<p xml:id="par15">When Daniels times are done the son of man comes in the clouds of heaven to receive <lb xml:id="l70"/>the Empire of all the Kingdoms of the world Dan: 7.14.</p>
<p xml:id="par16">When <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Lukes times of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles are finished, then shall be signs in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Sun &amp; Moon; <lb xml:id="l71"/>the Son of Man comes also in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> clouds of heaven.</p>
<p xml:id="par17">When <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Iohns Apocalyptical Beasts 42 Months raign <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> witnesses 1260 dayes prou<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l72"/>uing, determine the Ark of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Covenant is seen in heaven &amp; all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdoms of the world <lb xml:id="l73"/>become <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Kingdoms of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord &amp; his Christ Rev: 11.15.</p>
<p xml:id="par18">Here then is a further confirmation of what is already said, The man of Sin shall <lb xml:id="l74"/>not be destroyed till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> brightness of Christs coming &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> shall not be till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 42 months <lb xml:id="l75"/>or <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>16</sic><corr>1260</corr></choice> dayes or <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time times &amp; dividing of a time mentioned in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Iohn &amp; Daniel <lb xml:id="l76"/>is expired: so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> till that can be shewn to be accomplished the Man of Sin may <lb xml:id="l77"/>prevail –</p>
<p xml:id="par19">It will not be needfull to stay here to prove <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 dayes are to be understood <lb xml:id="l78"/>of so many years &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> they cannot be taken in this place indefinitly that being abundantly <lb xml:id="l79"/>cleared by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mede; none can deny but that prophetick dayes are usually so many <lb xml:id="l80"/>years, nor can any proue such uneven numbers as 42 or 1260 were euer taken <lb xml:id="l81"/>otherwise then definitely, &amp; besides <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> various wayes used for expressing the same <lb xml:id="l82"/>space of time in Daniel &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Revelations as 42 months, 1260 dayes, a time times <lb xml:id="l83"/>&amp; dividing of a time &amp; time times &amp; halfe a time not otherwayes agreeing then <lb xml:id="l84"/>in making all to mean a definite number of 1260 years.</p>
<p xml:id="par20">One thing more is worth consideration on this point <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 3 years &amp; halfe allotted <lb xml:id="l85"/>for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> viewing of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> dead bodies of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> witnesses slain, seems to be added unto <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 <lb xml:id="l86"/>years &amp; consequently that must run out before Gods judgments are to be expected on this Son <lb xml:id="l87"/>of perdition, this Man of Sin.</p>
<p xml:id="par21">Many are of opinion that is already passed, but that opinion seems not agreable to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l88"/>prophecy nor well to haue digested the difference between the killing of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> in general <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l89"/>in some sence may be applyed to all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time of their wildernesse-condition, the whole <lb xml:id="l90"/>space of 1260 years &amp; that slaughter upon <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> their dead bodies shall be exposed to view <lb xml:id="l91"/>3 years &amp; halfe, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> by all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Circ<choice><orig>ū</orig><reg>um</reg></choice>stances accompanying the same seems not applicable to <lb xml:id="l92"/>any other time then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> three years &amp; halfe.</p>
<p xml:id="par22">1. After <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>acco<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>account</expan></choice> given of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> witnesses prophecying 1260 dayes in sackcloth it <lb xml:id="l93"/><gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/> finished their Testimony the beast shal make war  <pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/> <fw type="pag" place="topLeft">3</fw> against them &amp; ouercome them &amp; <supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">kill them.</supplied> Their Testimony was finishing in <lb xml:id="l94"/>the time of their wildernesse-condition, the whole space of 1260 years, but the slaughter <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="4" unit="chars"/></del> is to be afterwards that is just on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Expiration of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 years.</p>
<p xml:id="par23">2. Its said after 3 dayes &amp; a halfe they shall rise &amp; the same hour there <supplied reason="copy" cert="high">was</supplied> <lb xml:id="l95"/>an earthquake &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 10<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> part of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> City fell &amp;c. if by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 10<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> part of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> City is meant Rome, that not being fallen, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> slaying of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> witnesses can not <supplied reason="copy" cert="high">be</supplied> <lb xml:id="l96"/>over.</p>
<p xml:id="par24">3. This by all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> circ<choice><orig>̄v</orig><reg>vm</reg></choice>stances shovld be a general slavghter at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same time, <supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">&amp;</supplied> <lb xml:id="l97"/>it is to be in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> street (that is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> jvrisdiction) of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great City (<choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> is Rome &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l98"/>peoples, Kingdomes, Tongves, nations are to rejoyce over them by sending guifts one to another for that they are freed from these who tormented them, therefore <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> slaughter in one country, as ffrance, or Spain, or Hungary tho it may be called the killing <lb xml:id="l99"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> witnesses (for there is no time set how long they shall be killing) comes not up to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> full of <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">this</add> prophecy, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> speakes of an Universall death of all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Witnesses <lb xml:id="l100"/>at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same time euery where in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> street of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great City over <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations <lb xml:id="l101"/>at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same time within that street are to rejoyce for 3 years &amp; halfe &amp; <unclear reason="copy" cert="medium">noe</unclear> <lb xml:id="l102"/>longer, because they are free from them who tormented them that is by their Reform<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">s</supplied> <lb xml:id="l103"/>the greatest Torment could befall the man of sin during his raign &amp; the time allotted him for his Government.</p>
<p xml:id="par25">To conclude this point if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> brightnesse of Christs second co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing is yet <lb xml:id="l104"/>to appear, if either <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 dayes of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Witnesses prophecying in sackcloth <lb xml:id="l105"/>or <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 3 dayes &amp; halfe of their lying dead &amp; exposed to view be not yet expi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l106"/>red, then the time of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Raigne of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Man of Sin doth yet continue &amp; will <lb xml:id="l107"/>continue till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> accomplishment of those things &amp; consequently Popery may <lb xml:id="l108"/>yet prevail, nay it seems necessary it should further prevail in order to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l109"/>accomplishment thereof.</p>
<p xml:id="par26">But after all it may be asked what is all this discourse to popery that is not <lb xml:id="l110"/>yet proved to be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mistery of iniquity, nor <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> man of Sin or son of <lb xml:id="l111"/>perdition.</p>
<p xml:id="par27">To which its replyed that they who haue a mind to know what <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mistery of iniquity is &amp; who <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Man of sin <del type="cancelled">and</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">need</add> look no further then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second of the <lb xml:id="l112"/>Thessal: &amp; he will find nothing in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world can be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mistery of inquity <supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">but</supplied> <lb xml:id="l113"/>Popery, nor none that Man of Sin there spoken of but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope and therefore <lb xml:id="l114"/>let that be again considered to this purpose. </p>
<p xml:id="par28">1. as hath been said, its evident the mistery of inquity was somthing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> did al<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l115"/>ready work in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time.</p>
<p xml:id="par29">2. that this working at that time was not so open &amp; discernable by everyone <lb xml:id="l116"/>as afterwards it should be, somthing did then <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>hold its Revelation <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was to be taken out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way &amp; then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> man of sin <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of perdition sh<supplied reason="damage" cert="medium">ould</supplied> <lb xml:id="l117"/>be revealed.</p>
<p xml:id="par30">That which was then working &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> present lett removed should be <lb xml:id="l118"/>revealed was to continue in being till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> brightnesse of Christs second coming <supplied reason="copy" cert="high">by</supplied> <lb xml:id="l119"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">it</del> <choice type="oldCorr"><sic>was</sic><corr>twas</corr></choice> to be destroyed.</p>
<p xml:id="par31">So that if it can be shewed that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spirit of Popery began to work in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls <supplied reason="copy" cert="high">time</supplied> <lb xml:id="l120"/>&amp; hath continued untill this day in credit &amp; esteem &amp; autority in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world euer since <lb xml:id="l121"/>it came to set up &amp; barface to be revealed it will highly concerne the Papists to <lb xml:id="l122"/>shew what <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mistery of iniquity was &amp; is to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> all those Characters agree &amp; it will be very <lb xml:id="l123"/>hard for them to pitch on any thing but Popery it selfe.</p>
<p xml:id="par32">All errors &amp; heresies which were in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time how long since haue they <gap reason="copy" extent="1" unit="words"/> <lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l124"/>&amp; although some of them may haue revived at sundry times since yet <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <gap reason="copy" extent="1" unit="words"/> pitch on <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> hath wrought <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of perdition the Man of Sin <del type="strikethrough">Sinne</del> is <gap reason="copy" extent="1" unit="words"/> foretold to doe.</p>
<p xml:id="par33">All civil powers &amp; States &amp; also Ecclesiastical amongst <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Heathen <supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">since <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice></supplied> <lb xml:id="l125"/>Pauls times how long since haue they left <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world to others, &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> of them Iew, <lb xml:id="l126"/>Saracen, Turk; Mahomet or any of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ballances of Europe or any parts of <unclear reason="copy" cert="low">Refor<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l127"/>mation</unclear> can be pretended to be working in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time. <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> yet <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mistery of <pb xml:id="p002v" n="2v"/> so neither any thing that shall yet arise no man can think any new State, Power <lb xml:id="l128"/>&amp; Religion yet to come either was working when the Epistle to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Thessalonians <lb xml:id="l129"/>was written or hath been hitherto hindered by a lett <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was euen then in being <lb xml:id="l130"/>since that lett <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice>euer it was hath been long agoe removed as all the </p>
<p xml:id="par34">To come a little closer: if wee find out what was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lett wee may the better know <lb xml:id="l131"/>what was the thing letted; it would be strange if wee should not know what the <lb xml:id="l132"/>lett was, for <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Paul knew it &amp; as is before observed the Thessalonians knew it, <lb xml:id="l133"/>&amp; is it probable a thing of such concern &amp; so generally known in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time <lb xml:id="l134"/>should be buried <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> that age &amp; there should be no retreiving of it, no <choice type="oldCorr"><sic><gap reason="illgbl" extent="1" unit="words"/></sic><corr>doubt</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l135"/>they did deliver this over to posterity &amp; accordingly, wee find the Primitive <lb xml:id="l136"/>Christians made noe question in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> businesse, but take it as certain that the Ro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l137"/>man Empire was the lett &amp; the thing letted was Antichristianisme &amp; according<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l138"/>ly they continually prayed for the <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">posterity</unclear></del> prosperity of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire lest <lb xml:id="l139"/>Antichrist should come who they looked for when the Roman Empire should <lb xml:id="l140"/>decline: &amp; he that will seriously consider it will not find it possible <lb xml:id="l141"/>to assign any other lett.</p>
<p xml:id="par35">That this was the lett will more evidently appear, if wee can learn <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l142"/>was the thing letted &amp; when wee haue turned <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> thoughts euery way what <lb xml:id="l143"/>can wee pitch upon but aiming at power, greatnesse, superiority &amp; <choice><abbr>Governmt</abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l144"/>by Church men.</p>
<p xml:id="par36">There can be no doubt that the Clergy so early as <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time had an <lb xml:id="l145"/>itching this way, wee find euen the Disciples of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Saviour contesting who should <lb xml:id="l146"/>be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> greatest, &amp; no small stir afterwards who was the cheifest of the Apostles <lb xml:id="l147"/>&amp; no marvail this Spirit did soe early appear amongst them who could <lb xml:id="l148"/>not but foresee <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Change the Religion of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Saviour was to make <del type="cancelled">amongst the</del> <lb xml:id="l149"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world, nor could be lesse sensible <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">either</unclear></del> of the great honour <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> high Priests <lb xml:id="l150"/>both of Iew &amp; Gentile had conferred on him, on whose vanishing, by the <lb xml:id="l151"/>prevalency of the Christian Religion, they thought somthing like thereunto <lb xml:id="l152"/>must fall to their Share.</p>
<p xml:id="par37">Neither <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> Saviours check of his disciples, nor <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls boasting of himselfe, <lb xml:id="l153"/>nor the after persecutions of the Church, could stop this humour; but besides <lb xml:id="l154"/>the quarrell amongst the Governors of the Church &amp; all other perticular <lb xml:id="l155"/>evidences of their Pride, wee find one of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first things to be setled in the <lb xml:id="l156"/>first councils was who should haue <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first, who <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> second Seat therin. <lb xml:id="l157"/>&amp; so on</p>
<p xml:id="par38">It needed not any great spirit of prophecy to foretel what this spirit <lb xml:id="l158"/>of Pride so early discovering it selfe euen under the severest persecutions <lb xml:id="l159"/>would come to when those persecutions should cease: nothing but prosperi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l160"/>ty attend them &amp; all Civil power <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> might curb this humour be removed.</p>
<p xml:id="par39">To what else could <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire be a lett, imagine all the Evills <lb xml:id="l161"/><choice><sic>could</sic><corr cert="high">that could</corr></choice> possibly be in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Church (for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mystery of iniquity was to be a falling <lb xml:id="l162"/>away from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true Church) how did the Roman Empire lett its prevalency. The <lb xml:id="l163"/>Errors &amp; heresies were rather promoted then letted by the Roman Empire; they <lb xml:id="l164"/>sprang from them who being convinced of the Rule of Christianity would <lb xml:id="l165"/>(possibly hoping thereby to avoid persecution) mix the same either <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Philosophy <lb xml:id="l166"/>or Theology or both then in vogue in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world. And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> more divided the <lb xml:id="l167"/>Christians were the lesse cause had the Roman Emperours to fear them, &amp; the <lb xml:id="l168"/>lesse concern the high Preists to put <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Civil power on to persecution.</p>
<p xml:id="par40">Besides since it is certain as before is shewn that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire was <lb xml:id="l169"/>the lett, what in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire could be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lett but the intirenesse of <lb xml:id="l170"/>its Civil power &amp; consequently <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> thing letted must be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ambition of <lb xml:id="l171"/><choice><abbr>Gouernm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Gouernment</expan></choice></p>
<p xml:id="par41">As the Roman Empire was heathen it was a lett to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mystery of godlinesse <lb xml:id="l172"/>but not to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mistery of iniquity, for as to all other corruptions but that wee <lb xml:id="l173"/>are speaking of there was no lett, but if God had not preuented by his grace  <pb xml:id="p003r" n="3r"/> not<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>standing any <unclear reason="copy" cert="high">external</unclear> <gap reason="copy" extent="unclear"/></p>
<p xml:id="par42">When the Empire turned Christian, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wicked one was revealed, as its said he should <lb xml:id="l174"/>be when the lett was removed &amp; consequently must then haue been if heathen <lb xml:id="l175"/>Rome was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lett, indeed the mystery of iniquity <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> before was working &amp; <lb xml:id="l176"/>therby make a further progresse by complying <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old heathen custome <lb xml:id="l177"/>&amp; licking up <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> old Idolatry into new shapes but yet it came not up to <lb xml:id="l178"/>that forme, capacity &amp; policy that any one could point out who was the man <lb xml:id="l179"/>of sin, who <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of perdition.</p>
<p xml:id="par43">Moreover <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> custome of the primitive Christians, to pray for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> preservation of <lb xml:id="l180"/>the Roman Empire least Antichrist should come plainly showes that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman <lb xml:id="l181"/>Empire was a lett not as heathen nor as Christian but as an Empire as it had <lb xml:id="l182"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sole civil power in its selfe during <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> continuance wherof it is certain it must <lb xml:id="l183"/>be a lett to those things <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> man of sin was foretold by <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Paul to doe, from <lb xml:id="l184"/>whence it followes as evidently that the mystery of iniquity then working must <lb xml:id="l185"/>be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great pride amongst <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Churchmen, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Paul considering together <lb xml:id="l186"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fall of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> its evident he foreknew did easily discern <lb xml:id="l187"/>the same Spirit would be restlesse untill it exalted it selfe above all that is <lb xml:id="l188"/>called God that is aboue all civil power &amp; magistracy: And now let <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Papists <lb xml:id="l189"/>judge whether Popery be not the mystery of iniquity &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope that man of sin <lb xml:id="l190"/>&amp; son of perdition, if they will not grant it, they must shew to what the <lb xml:id="l191"/>Roman Empire was a lett besides that Spirit of Government <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was then work<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l192"/>ing &amp; hath since prevailed.</p>
<p xml:id="par44">It is now high time to consider the other part of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> enquiry to wit on <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l193"/>grounds any expectation may be built of Popery's not continuing long in case for <lb xml:id="l194"/>a time it should further preuail then now at present it doth –</p>
<p xml:id="par45">Here all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> former perticulars might be repeated, for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same reasons which proue <lb xml:id="l195"/>Antichrist is yet to continue &amp; prevail do also prove his destruction to be drawing nigh. Is he to continue because the brightnesse of Christs second coming hath not <lb xml:id="l196"/>yet appeared. because <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 years &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> three years &amp; halfe are not expired <lb xml:id="l197"/>he shall not continue long because Christs second coming hastens because 1260 years <lb xml:id="l198"/>are near expiring &amp; consequently <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> beginning of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 3 years &amp; halfe</p>
<p xml:id="par46">But because what may be said concerning <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> approach of Christs second <del type="cancelled">com</del> <lb xml:id="l199"/>co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ing may not be so convincing to euery one, &amp; that the other two points are <lb xml:id="l200"/>not only sufficient to prove the approach of Antichrists's destruction but of Christ's <lb xml:id="l201"/>coming, let us consider when <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 years began &amp; that will shew us when <lb xml:id="l202"/>wee may expect the end of them &amp; the accomplishment of other things –</p>
<p xml:id="par47">If what is already said be true wee can not be at any great losse in this matter <lb xml:id="l203"/>for <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Paul tels us the man of sin should be revealed when the lett was taken out <lb xml:id="l204"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way &amp; not before, that is when <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Civil power then lodged in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Em<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l205"/>pire was soe Changed that way was thereby made for some churchmen, that is, <lb xml:id="l206"/>the Bishop of Rome to exalt himselfe aboue all magistracy. Not that he must <lb xml:id="l207"/>come to that height before the account of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1260 years did begin, no, that <lb xml:id="l208"/>was a work of longer time but when the lett that was in <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Pauls time viz: <lb xml:id="l209"/>the civil power of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire was so taken out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way that it was no <lb xml:id="l210"/>longer a lett to his attempting the same, then he was revealed, that is, then it began <lb xml:id="l211"/>plainly to appear what <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope drove at &amp; consequently then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> account began.</p>
<p xml:id="par48">And when should this be but then when that Civil power <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> before was entirely <lb xml:id="l212"/>lodged <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Emperours was scattered &amp; divided amongst no lesse then ten <lb xml:id="l213"/>Kings or Kingdoms, this made way for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pope to advance himselfe according <lb xml:id="l214"/>to all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pride of his heart.</p>
<p xml:id="par49">He was now no longer under a subordinate power, but sets up <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> others on the <lb xml:id="l215"/>Spoil of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire for an original jurisdiction and the advantages <lb xml:id="l216"/>he had ouer them by being first on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> spot, by <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">their</add> quarrelling amongst them selves, <lb xml:id="l217"/>by their custom of dividing what they got amongst their Children, but aoue all <lb xml:id="l218"/>by his pretence to Religion, made the way plain for him to come to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> height <lb xml:id="l219"/>of his ambition.</p><pb xml:id="p003v" n="3v"/> <fw type="pag" place="topLeft">6</fw>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par50">More plainly the inundation of the Barbarous Nations &amp; nothing else was the taking <lb xml:id="l220"/>the lett out of the way. They by a swift motion, by unknown wayes &amp; in a <lb xml:id="l221"/>most prodigious manner <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> space of 50 years overran the greatest Em<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l222"/>pire <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world euer had, som of whom were before as much unknown to the <lb xml:id="l223"/>Romans as the Romans to them, they came fr<choice><orig>ō</orig><reg>om</reg></choice> seueral parts of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world, &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out <lb xml:id="l224"/>any foreagreement concurred at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same time in seueral places to assault <lb xml:id="l225"/>that renowned Empire: their successe was noe lesse wonderfull, indeed the whole <lb xml:id="l226"/>History of their coming in, prevalency &amp; settlement into seueral Kingdoms, together <lb xml:id="l227"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> consideration how things were ordered a little before in the Roman Empire <lb xml:id="l228"/>as it were on purpose to make room for them; these things bring along <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> them <lb xml:id="l229"/>convincing evidence that all was ordered by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> overruling disposal of Almighty God <lb xml:id="l230"/>&amp; doe so fully point out to us the time we are enquiring after that it is wonderfull <lb xml:id="l231"/>it should not be more observed by us, especially when <anchor xml:id="n003v-01"/> <note place="marginLeft" target="#n003v-01"><foreign xml:lang="lat">qui tenebat de medio fit &amp; non intelligimus Antichristum appropinquant.</foreign> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Ierom: on Alaricus the Goths taking Rome <choice><abbr>An<hi rend="superscript">o:</hi></abbr><expan>Anno</expan></choice> 410.</note><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Ierome &amp; others haue <lb xml:id="l232"/>so long agoe pointed them out to us as the time in which the lett was taken <lb xml:id="l233"/>away &amp; consequently in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Antichrist was revealed.</p>
<p xml:id="par51">That <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire had afterwards a considerable duration in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> East <lb xml:id="l234"/>&amp; some lingring time of death, after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> coming of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Goths &amp; Vandalls in <lb xml:id="l235"/>the West, is not of any consideration to this point; for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> seat of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> man of <lb xml:id="l236"/>Sin was to be <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> West, it is there the pride of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first Governors of <lb xml:id="l237"/>the Church hath shapen it selfe into a Dominion <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> hath made a glorious <lb xml:id="l238"/>show for a long time, but there hath not been any such thing in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> East; <lb xml:id="l239"/>&amp; it makes no matter how long <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> power of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> West was <lb xml:id="l240"/>dying, since it was removed from being a lett when the Civil power of those Coun<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l241"/>tryes where Antichrist was to raign was setled in other hands, such as according <lb xml:id="l242"/>to what was foretold of them should give their power to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> beast, till God <lb xml:id="l243"/>should put it into their hearts to hate <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Whore &amp;c.</p>
<p xml:id="par52">This then brings us to a certainty where to begin the 1260 years <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l244"/>a latitude. It was about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> invasion of the Barbarous nations &amp; their <lb xml:id="l245"/>erecting seuerall Kingdoms in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Roman Empire, &amp; had wee nothing more then <lb xml:id="l246"/>this it were sufficient to ground an expectation that the prevalency yet to come <lb xml:id="l247"/>of Popery cannot continue long, it being certain that aboue 1200 of the 1260 <lb xml:id="l248"/>years are run out already</p>
<p xml:id="par53">Here<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> most men who are well enough persuaded of those things satisfye <lb xml:id="l249"/>themselues <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out looking further, &amp; though <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time must begin from some thing <lb xml:id="l250"/>eminent <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> happened <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in 50 years, are loth to trouble themselues to look <lb xml:id="l251"/>so far back as to consider all things <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> space, certainly a great negligence <lb xml:id="l252"/>for howeuer wee may not be able to find out <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> exact time yet ought wee <lb xml:id="l253"/>to search wherin if wee attain not to what wee look for, yet wee may <lb xml:id="l254"/>therin see such changes &amp; alterations wrought by God in that time as may as <lb xml:id="l255"/>well as any deserve <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> serious consideration &amp; may very well recompence all <lb xml:id="l256"/><choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> labour herein.<space dim="vertical" extent="3" unit="lines"/></p>
