                <p xml:id="par3">I have been out of Venice these three <lb xml:id="l1"/>Months, and on my arrival here I saw a <choice><abbr>lett<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>letter</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>from you, sent me by my Friend M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Smith. <lb xml:id="l3"/>in it I see a copy of directions <choice><abbr>ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Monu<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l4"/>mental piece to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> memory of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> I. Newton: I was formerly favoured <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same Notices <lb xml:id="l5"/>more than once, and sent you my opinion <lb xml:id="l6"/><choice><abbr>ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 'em in a letter which I writ to you <lb xml:id="l7"/>from Rome in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> month of <choice><abbr>X<hi rend="superscript">br</hi>.</abbr><expan>December</expan></choice> last &amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I <lb xml:id="l8"/>put into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> French post my selfe tho' I find <lb xml:id="l9"/>by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> you write <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> it must have miscarryed: <lb xml:id="l10"/>I keep no copys of my Letters, therefore shall <lb xml:id="l11"/>give my present opinion <choice><abbr>ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> piece as you <fw place="bottomRight" type="catch">wou'd</fw><pb xml:id="p002" n="2"/> <supplied reason="omitted" source="catchword">wou'd</supplied> have it, and as I intended it.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">In all the pieces I have had done, there is (in <lb xml:id="l12"/>each of 'em) a Sepulchre wherein I suppose my <lb xml:id="l13"/>Heroe lyes – the sepulchres are adorned <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> statues, urns, basso-relievo's &amp;c, allusive to <lb xml:id="l14"/>the Virtues, arms of the Family &amp;c <hi rend="underline">of each of 'em</hi> <lb xml:id="l15"/>The sepulchres I suppose placed in a solitary <lb xml:id="l16"/>scituation, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> there is an anniversary Ceremo<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l17"/>ny performed (on a certain day) at 'em – I <lb xml:id="l18"/>introduce Figures (under each of 'em) proper<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l19"/>ly Employed as I think to explain <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mean<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l20"/>ing of the Visitants, &amp; their intentions &amp;c.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5"> 'Tis impossible to tell (in such a narrow com<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l21"/>pass) more than one main story <choice><abbr>with<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>without</expan></choice> running <lb xml:id="l22"/>into <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> wou'd be very trivial, &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pieces wou'd <lb xml:id="l23"/>resemble the cutts in <hi rend="underline">The Gierusaleme Liberata</hi></p><pb xml:id="p003" n="3"/>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6">In the <choice><abbr>Monum<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Monument</expan></choice> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Memory of the Duke of <lb xml:id="l24"/>Malbró', I make a soldier attended <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Guards <lb xml:id="l25"/>&amp;c. as visiting <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Monum<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Monument</expan></choice> of a great General – <lb xml:id="l26"/>I mean nothing more in it but this visit – <lb xml:id="l27"/>now if I was to <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">ex</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">re</add>present his battles, sieges <lb xml:id="l28"/>and ability's as an able counsellour I have <lb xml:id="l29"/>no way to do it but by Medaglions, Medals <lb xml:id="l30"/>Basso relievo's – statues &amp;c.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par7">To shew you <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> I have not been negligent in <lb xml:id="l31"/>serving you, I have ordered a piece to be done <lb xml:id="l32"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same size <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> those of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>D.</abbr><expan>Duke</expan></choice> of Richmond's <lb xml:id="l33"/>but turn'd long ways – the perspective <lb xml:id="l34"/>&amp; Landscape have been done these six month's <lb xml:id="l35"/>but how to dispose of the Figures is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great dif<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l36"/>ficulty &amp; I'me affraid impossible, at least to my <lb xml:id="l37"/>own satisfaction &amp; if it can't be done to my satisfac<lb xml:id="l38"/>tion I'll promise you shall never have it</p><pb xml:id="p004" n="4"/>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par8">I wish <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> gentleman who assisted you <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the <lb xml:id="l39"/>plan of the Landscape &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> disposition of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> several <lb xml:id="l40"/>groupes of figures wou'd make a small Sketch <lb xml:id="l41"/>of his picture, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> will explain his Meaning much <lb xml:id="l42"/>better than I can understand it by writing –</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par9">I would be glad to know, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> size he intends <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Fi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l43"/>gures to be (in a cloath of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> length &amp; breadth) <lb xml:id="l44"/>and how he wou'd have <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> resemblances kept <lb xml:id="l45"/>of the several philosophers, astronomers &amp;c. <lb xml:id="l46"/>and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> different Meanings expressed of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> dif<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l47"/>ferent groupes of Figures &amp;c.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par10">In short better heads than mine in Rome &amp; <lb xml:id="l48"/>Bologna are puzzled how to contrive it –</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par11"><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaack Newtons Monument is one of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> collec<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l49"/>tion <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> William Morice has &amp; assoon as I <lb xml:id="l50"/><unclear reason="copy" cert="medium">send</unclear> it him be so good as to cast an Eye on it <fw place="bottomRight" type="catch">and</fw><pb xml:id="p005" n="5"/> <supplied reason="omitted" source="catchword">and</supplied> Let me have <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> opinion <choice><abbr>ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> it –– <lb xml:id="l51"/>If <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> or something like <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> will please you <lb xml:id="l52"/>I will have it well Executed by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same or <lb xml:id="l53"/>some other able painter: if not I'll try whether <lb xml:id="l54"/>anything can be done in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> manner you desire; <lb xml:id="l55"/>if neither pleases you, <choice><sic>than</sic><corr>then</corr></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">Fifty pound</hi> <lb xml:id="l56"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I <choice><abbr>rec<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> shall be <choice><abbr>rep<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>repaid</expan></choice> you, by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same <lb xml:id="l57"/>hand: this is all I think necessary to be <choice><abbr>s<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> on this <lb xml:id="l58"/>score.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par12">Ime glad you have given <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> co<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ission to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Smith <lb xml:id="l59"/>for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pictures of Canaletto, &amp; I hope you'l <lb xml:id="l60"/>like 'em when they are done. I am, it may be, <lb xml:id="l61"/>a little too delicate in my choice, for of twenty <lb xml:id="l62"/>pieces I see of him I don't like eighteen <lb xml:id="l63"/>&amp; I have seen several sent to London <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> I <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">wou'd not</fw><pb xml:id="p006" n="6"/> <supplied reason="omitted" source="catchword">wou'd not</supplied> give house room too, nor two pistols each. <lb xml:id="l64"/>He's a covetous, greedy fellow &amp; because <lb xml:id="l65"/>he's in reputation people are glad to get <lb xml:id="l66"/>anything &amp; at his own price.</p>
