                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice></del> I esteem my self much obliged to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas for his case in making <lb xml:id="l1"/><choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <foreign xml:lang="lat"><choice><abbr>Exꝑ<hi rend="overline">t</hi>um</abbr><expan>Experimentum</expan></choice> Crucis</foreign>: but his reasoning I still forbear to meddle with becaus <lb xml:id="l2"/>I will not run into any other dispute till I see a full end of what relates <lb xml:id="l3"/>to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Linus. For if this running from one thing to another be allowed <lb xml:id="l4"/>we shall never come to a conclusion in any thing. M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas would re<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l5"/>present <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> question about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> length of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Image improper if not <lb xml:id="l6"/>preposterous to spend time on till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> different refrangibility of rays differently <lb xml:id="l7"/>coloured be agree<del type="strikethrough">e</del>d on. That is he would wholly decline it. For by his asserting <lb xml:id="l8"/>demonstrations against me it's plain he thinks <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> different refrangibility will <lb xml:id="l9"/>never be agreed on. But however he represents it others may think<del type="strikethrough">s</del> it more <lb xml:id="l10"/>preposterous to run from one thing to another before we come to a conclusion <lb xml:id="l11"/>&amp; esteem <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> question as materiall now as when twas Started &amp; thought worthy <lb xml:id="l12"/>of being put upon M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Linus's account. The examin<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in</add>g my Theory is but a <lb xml:id="l13"/>new attempted digression. 'Tis <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> truth of my experiments which is <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> business <lb xml:id="l14"/>in hand. On this my Theory depends, &amp; which is of more consequence, <lb xml:id="l15"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> credit of my being wary, accurate and faithfull in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reports I have made <lb xml:id="l16"/>or shall make of experiments in any subject, seeing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> a trip in any one will bring <lb xml:id="l17"/>all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest into suspicion. <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nd besides <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> full truth of what I have said <lb xml:id="l18"/>in my first letter of colours about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> impossibility of promoting much <lb xml:id="l19"/>further Catadioptrical Telescopes depends on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> leng<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">t</add>h of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Image, <lb xml:id="l20"/>and is of great moment, be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Theory true <unclear reason="blotDel" cert="high">or</unclear> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">or</add> fal<supplied reason="damage" cert="high">se</supplied> Wherefore though <lb xml:id="l21"/>I was willing to let pass any way of concluding M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Linus's proper <lb xml:id="l22"/>objection; presuming <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he would have concluded <del type="strikethrough">it</del> himself as much to <lb xml:id="l23"/>his own honour as to my satisfaction had he lived to see <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>ex<hi rend="overline">ꝑt</hi></abbr><expan>expert</expan></choice> duely tryed: <lb xml:id="l24"/>yet I cannot admit to have <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> remainder of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> business wholly jostled <lb xml:id="l25"/>out by a new Subject. Let what relates to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Linus be made an end of <lb xml:id="l26"/>&amp; then M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas may begin upon his own sco<del type="strikethrough">a</del>r<unclear reason="blot" cert="low">e</unclear> as soon as he <lb xml:id="l27"/>pleases.</p>
                <p xml:id="par3">And becaus I hope his next letter will grant me what remains of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l28"/>contended <choice><abbr>ex<hi rend="overline">ꝑt</hi></abbr><expan>expert</expan></choice>, <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> there be no further delays, I desire him to send me word which <lb xml:id="l29"/>of his experiments he would have me begin with. For though whilst he urged <lb xml:id="l30"/>his experiments but as exceptions which he hoped would not be unwelcome, I esteemed <pb xml:id="p038v" n="38v" facs="#i78"/> esteemed them not so proper to be considered in competition <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a De<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l31"/>monstration, yet now he adds weight to their number presenting them <lb xml:id="l32"/>for Demonstrations, &amp; one Demonstration <choice><sic>deserv<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">e</add><del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add></sic><corr>deserves</corr></choice> to be considered as well <lb xml:id="l33"/>as another: I intend to take into consideration one or two of them which <lb xml:id="l34"/>he shall recommend for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> best: &amp; when there appears to be no <lb xml:id="l35"/>weight in those let others judge what there may be in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> numbers of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l36"/>rest. But I shall consider but one <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">at a</add> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del>time, <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> neither of us may have <lb xml:id="l37"/>room to run up and down in till we are agreed. You know how weary <lb xml:id="l38"/>I have profest myself of this subject even before M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Linus's first <lb xml:id="l39"/>letter came to me; &amp; as much might be gathered by my deferring to <lb xml:id="l40"/>meddle with <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> business for a year together till I was urged to it, <lb xml:id="l41"/>&amp; also by some expressions in my last letter. And therefore I hope <lb xml:id="l42"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas will not press me beyond one, or two of his objections though <lb xml:id="l43"/>afterwards I may say something <del type="strikethrough">more</del> of <del type="strikethrough">that</del> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest.</p>
                <p xml:id="par4">But becaus we stick at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Question about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> length of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Image, <lb xml:id="l44"/>to prevent unnecessary demurrs I cannot but say something more of <lb xml:id="l45"/><unclear reason="hand" cert="medium"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice></unclear>. M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas tells you <hi rend="underline">when convenience of weather, and Prism<del type="strikethrough">e</del>s <lb xml:id="l46"/>shall serve he shall be glad to see how farr <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> length of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spectr<choice><orig>ū</orig><reg>um</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l47"/>made by Prism<del type="strikethrough">e</del>s of different angle. sett down in my last letter will agree <lb xml:id="l48"/>with observations at Liege: but yet <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he thinks it improper to <lb xml:id="l49"/>spend time on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> precise length of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spectr<choice><orig>ū</orig><reg>um</reg></choice> by severall Prisms before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l50"/>different refrangibility of rays be agreed on.</hi> That is he still tu<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">r</add>n<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add> off <lb xml:id="l51"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Quæstion in hand to a new one, as if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> business now was onely to <lb xml:id="l52"/>examin<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> my last <del type="over">l</del><add place="over" indicator="no">L</add>etter. The length made by several angles I sent not <lb xml:id="l53"/>to create new unnecessary disputes but on<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">l</add>y to accommodate my <del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">O</add>bservations <lb xml:id="l54"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prisms of men abroad to try and judge between us, and therefore thoug<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">h</add> <lb xml:id="l55"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas may try them also for his private satisfaction, yet I <lb xml:id="l56"/>think it as improper as he does to spend time on preciseness of all those <lb xml:id="l57"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> <lb xml:id="l58"/><del type="cancelled"><space extent="4" unit="chars" dim="horizontal"/></del> The Question in hand is this. <del type="over">T</del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>hether <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Image <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="6" unit="chars"/></del></add> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">E</add>xperi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l59"/>ment set down set down in my first letter about colours printed in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l60"/>Transactions Num 80 could be five times longer than broad as I have there <lb xml:id="l61"/>exprest it, or but three or at most three and a half as M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas has <pb xml:id="p039r" n="39r" facs="#i79"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight" hand="#unknownCataloguer">[39]</fw> has represented it. To this I desire a direct answer: which I hope will <lb xml:id="l62"/>be so free as (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>out</abbr><expan>without</expan></choice> putting me to any further wa<del type="over">y</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ie</add>s of justifying myself) <lb xml:id="l63"/>may take off all suspicion of my misrepresenting matter of fact. If M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l64"/>Lucas hath not yet procured a Prism with an angle about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> bigness of mine <lb xml:id="l65"/>there used, &amp; with sides not at all concave, but plain or onely a very little <lb xml:id="l66"/>convex, let him onely upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> receipt of this signify without any insinuation <lb xml:id="l67"/>of suspicion <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he sees no reason to oppose or question me further upon <lb xml:id="l68"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> experiments they have hitherto made and proceeded on, &amp; I shall acquiesce <lb xml:id="l69"/>and begin <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> his <del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">O</add>bjections; &amp; this I think he need not stick at seeing he is <lb xml:id="l70"/>now to seek for a due Prism to try <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Expt</abbr><expan>Experiment</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>, &amp; in his former letter where <lb xml:id="l71"/>he started <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Question he set down <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> angle of his Prism less than <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> in <lb xml:id="l72"/>my experiment he wrote against: not attending to this <del type="over">p</del><add place="over" indicator="no">P</add>rinciple <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l73"/>greater angle makes <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> greater leng<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">t</add>h of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Image.                 <p xml:id="par8">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> last clause of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas's <lb xml:id="l78"/>Letter where he says <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">I cal<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l79"/>culated <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> length of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Spectrum <lb xml:id="l80"/>by divers Prisms</hi>: the word <hi rend="underline">calculate</hi> <lb xml:id="l81"/>misrepresentes what I sent him; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> force <lb xml:id="l82"/>of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> lay in their being not calculated <lb xml:id="l83"/>but measured. I desire M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas would <lb xml:id="l84"/>be very exact in measuring <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> angle of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l85"/>Prism he tries <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Exꝑ<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Experiment</expan></choice> with: for I must confess I cannot <lb xml:id="l86"/>but suspect <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> angle he Set down before (I imagin by <lb xml:id="l87"/>guess) for 60 degrees, was nearer to 50. I could wish we <lb xml:id="l88"/>knew <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> just measure of that angle.
