                <p xml:id="par3">I received <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> letter conteining <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lucas <lb xml:id="l1"/>&amp; this afternoon another from <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> self by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l2"/>White <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> last Transactions, for <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I thank <lb xml:id="l3"/>you. [<anchor xml:id="n036r-01"/><note place="marginLeft" target="#n036r-01">N. 131. p. 785. Exp. 13.</note>The speculation of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> figures of confining liquors. <lb xml:id="l4"/>I am apt to think <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Boyll may by degrees administer very considerable thoughts to such as are con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l5"/>triving mechanical systems systems of P<hi rend="overline">hy</hi>: but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> last of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l6"/>Phænomena, where an oyle lighter <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>than</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>sp<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>spirit</expan></choice> of wine poured <lb xml:id="l7"/>on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Alcaly deliquated made a very specular superficies in <lb xml:id="l8"/>their confine, being more in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way of th<del type="over">ese</del><add place="over" indicator="no">in</add>gs I have been <lb xml:id="l9"/>som<unclear reason="blot" cert="high">e</unclear>times considering; I shal rather <choice><abbr>p<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>sent</abbr><expan>present</expan></choice> you <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">an</unclear><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice></add> <lb xml:id="l10"/>thoughts occur to me about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice>, presuming you will excuse <lb xml:id="l11"/>my randome guesses] because it is by <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> desire <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> I write <lb xml:id="l12"/>them.</p>
                <p xml:id="par4">[I imagin then that as <choice><abbr>sp<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>spirit</expan></choice> of wine, though lighter <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>than</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l13"/>water, is yet a more strongly refracting liquor; so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l14"/>refractive density of this lighter oyle may be still greater, <lb xml:id="l15"/>so as much to exceed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Alcalizate liquor. And <lb xml:id="l16"/>if so then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> propounded Phonomenon may keep analogy <lb xml:id="l17"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> that of other reflecting superficies. For <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reflexive <lb xml:id="l18"/>power of any superficies (so far as my observation rea<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l19"/>ches) is proportional to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> difference of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> refractive den<lb xml:id="l20"/>sities of <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">the</unclear></del> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">bo</add>rdering mediums. And (<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I take to be <lb xml:id="l21"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>p<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>sent</abbr><expan>present</expan></choice> case,) <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same superficies refle<del type="over">x</del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>ts <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">much</add> more <lb xml:id="l22"/>strongly <del type="strikethrough">towards</del> on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> side towards <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> denser (I mean <lb xml:id="l23"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> more strongly refractive) medium then <del type="strikethrough">towards <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rarer</del> <lb xml:id="l24"/>on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> opposite side. B<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">ut</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">es</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">id</add><del type="over">to</del><add place="over" indicator="no">es</add> when that side towards <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l25"/>denser Mediu<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add> is viewed<del type="cancelled">,</del> obliquely enough, it always re<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l26"/>flects all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> light to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eye as much as quicksilver does: &amp; <lb xml:id="l27"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> greater <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> difference of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">refractive</add> density <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>f <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mediums <lb xml:id="l28"/>is, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> less obliquity is requi<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add>ite to produce this phænomenon. <lb xml:id="l29"/>This total reflexion holds <del type="over">to</del><add place="over" indicator="no">in</add> all positions of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eye. not <lb xml:id="l30"/>less oblique then to a certain limit: &amp; if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eye be held <lb xml:id="l31"/>less oblique then <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">at</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> limit, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reflexion grows very sensibly <lb xml:id="l32"/>fainter on a <choice><sic>s<del type="over">e<gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">u</add>ddem</sic><corr>sudden</corr></choice>, &amp; is faintest of all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>when</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> super<lb xml:id="l33"/>ficies is viewed perpendicularly. The mentioned limit, a skil<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l34"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">ful</add> Optician, by knowing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> refractive power of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> liquors <lb xml:id="l35"/>would e<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>sily assigne.</p>
                <p xml:id="par5">If <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>exp<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>experiment</expan></choice> were therefore to be tryed again it might <lb xml:id="l36"/>not be amis to observe whither if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> common superficies of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l37"/>liquors be viewed by degrees less &amp; less obliquely, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> reflexion does <pb xml:id="p036v" n="36v" facs="#i74"/> not <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">begin to</add> grow faint at a certain position of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eye &amp; from <lb xml:id="l38"/>thence forward grow insensibly fainter &amp; fainter till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l39"/>eye be perpendicularly over <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> superficies. 2 Whether <lb xml:id="l40"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lighter oyle be not more strongly refractive <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>than</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> oyle <lb xml:id="l41"/>of Tartar. 3 Whether <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> obliquity at <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> refle<del type="over">c</del><add place="over" indicator="no">x</add><del type="strikethrough">t</del>ion <lb xml:id="l42"/><del type="cancelled">grows</del> begins to grow faint, be not such as a Mathemati<lb xml:id="l43"/>cian would compute it by having <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">different densities</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">refractive powers</add> of <lb xml:id="l44"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> two liquors given, that is, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rat<del type="cancelled">h</del>ios of their sines of <lb xml:id="l45"/>incidence &amp; refraction. 4: Whether if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> light <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">oyle</add> be powred <lb xml:id="l46"/>on <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">some</add> more strongly refracting liquor then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> alcalizate <lb xml:id="l47"/>one (such as butter of Antimony <foreign xml:lang="lat">per deliquium</foreign> (as I may <lb xml:id="l48"/>call <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> solution of it <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">made</add> by exposing it to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> air) may be) the <lb xml:id="l49"/>common superficies be not less stron<del type="over">l</del><add place="over" indicator="no">g</add>ly reflexive then <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>when</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l50"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Alcalizate liquor or common water <del type="cancelled">of</del> is used.]</p>
