                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">Having sent away <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> answer to <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iesuit Pardies, after it <lb xml:id="l1"/>had been read at our Society <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>s well as <choice><abbr>yr</abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> letter containing <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>observations relating to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> R. Moray's proposals; I receiued <lb xml:id="l3"/>a printed account from Paris, <choice><abbr>wch</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> relateth to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">T</add>elescopes, <lb xml:id="l4"/>and pretends to haue lighted upon a <choice><abbr>refinemt</abbr><expan>refinement</expan></choice> of <del type="over"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>ym</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice></add>. This <lb xml:id="l5"/>I thought myself obliged to impart <del type="cancelled">it</del> to you, <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> you m<del type="over">ay</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ig</add><add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">ht</add> <lb xml:id="l6"/>consider it, and compare it <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> what Mr Gregory, the Scot, <lb xml:id="l7"/>hath printed concerning it, in his <foreign xml:lang="lat">optica promota <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nn. 1663</foreign> <lb xml:id="l8"/>pag. 92. 93. 94: and thereupon let me know what answer <lb xml:id="l9"/>to return to those Parisian Refiners; who speake thus:</p>
                <p xml:id="par4"><foreign xml:lang="fre">Il y a environ mois, que M. Cassegrain <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add> communi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l10"/>qué la figure d'un Telescope, qui est pres<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice> semblable à celuy <lb xml:id="l11"/>de M. Newton, et qu'il a inventé; mais que ie trouue plus spiri<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l12"/>tuel. Ie vous en fais icy la description.</foreign></p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5"><figure rend="floatLeft"><graphic url="NATP00390-01.jpg"/></figure><foreign xml:lang="fre">ABCD est vn fort tuyan, dans le fonds <lb xml:id="l13"/>duquel il y a un grand miroir Conca<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l14"/>ve Cd, percé en son milieu.</foreign></p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6"><foreign xml:lang="fre">F est un miroir convexe, desposé de <lb xml:id="l15"/>telle maniere, eu esgard à sa convexité <lb xml:id="l16"/>qu'il refleschit les especes, qu'il recoit du grand <lb xml:id="l17"/>miroir, vers le trou au milieu dc Cd; ou'il y a un <lb xml:id="l18"/>Oculaire, au travers duquel on regarde.</foreign></p>
                <p xml:id="par7"><foreign xml:lang="fre">L'avantage, qu<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add> se trouue dans cet Instrument sur celuy <lb xml:id="l19"/>de M. Newton, est, 1. que l'embouchure ou l'ouuerture du <lb xml:id="l20"/>luyan AB, peut estre de telle grandeur qu'on vendra; et <pb xml:id="p010v" n="10v" facs="#i22"/> par consequent que l'on aura bien plus de rayons sur <lb xml:id="l21"/>le miroir concaue, que sur celuy de M. Newton. 2. La re<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l22"/>flexion des rayons sera tres naturelle, puisqu'elle se fera <lb xml:id="l23"/>sur l'Axe mes<unclear reason="hand" cert="low">ur</unclear>e, et consequemment plus vive. 3. La vision <lb xml:id="l24"/>en sera d'autant plus agreable, qu'on ne sera ponit incommo, <lb xml:id="l25"/>de' du grand iour, à cause du fond CD, qui couvre tout le <lb xml:id="l26"/>visage. Outre qu'on aura monis de peine à descouvrir <lb xml:id="l27"/>les Objects, que dans celle de M. Newton.</foreign></p>
                <p xml:id="par8">So <hi rend="underline">far the French Iournal</hi>. I am of opinion, you <lb xml:id="l28"/>will find cause to controle the<del type="strikethrough">se</del> confident assertions of th<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>s <lb xml:id="l29"/>Author, as I am apt to belieue, you will make good <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l30"/>Theory of light; <choice><abbr>wch</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> some begin to lay more weight upon <lb xml:id="l31"/>now, than at first. Howeuer, I shall suggest, <choice><abbr>yt</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> when <lb xml:id="l32"/>your answer to Mr Hooks and <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iesuit Pardies objections <lb xml:id="l33"/>shall be thought fit to be printed, <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> names of the Objectors, <lb xml:id="l34"/>especially if they desire it may be so, be omitted, and <lb xml:id="l35"/>their objections only <del type="cancelled">r<gap reason="illgblDel" extent="4" unit="chars"/>ed and</del> urged: since those of the <lb xml:id="l36"/>R. Society <del type="strikethrough">aime</del> ought to aime at nothing, but the discove<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l37"/>ry of truth, and <choice><abbr>ye</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>improvemt</abbr><expan>improvement</expan></choice> of knowledge <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">and</add> not at <del type="strikethrough">all</del> <lb xml:id="l38"/>the prostituting <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of persons for</add> their mis-apprehensions or mistakes. <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">of</unclear> <gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/> <lb xml:id="l39"/>s<gap reason="illgblDel" extent="4" unit="chars"/></del></p>
