                <p rend="indent15" xml:id="par3"><hi rend="large">Instructions</hi> which We (in his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> name) <lb xml:id="l2"/>do Will and require to be Observed by Iustus <lb xml:id="l3"/>Brandshagen and his Assistant <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Hamilton <lb xml:id="l4"/>in the Survey and Tryall which they are to make <lb xml:id="l5"/>of the Mine with the Mountain about it called <lb xml:id="l6"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Erksines Mine in the Parish of Alva <lb xml:id="l7"/>five miles from <choice><sic>Sterling</sic><corr>Stirling</corr></choice> East and by North. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4"><hi rend="largest">Y</hi><hi rend="larger">ou</hi> are to repaire with all convenient speed to the said <lb xml:id="l8"/>Mine, And (having the assistance of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Haldane of <lb xml:id="l9"/>Glenagles Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. who is willing to Encourage and forward <lb xml:id="l10"/>this business) you are to break off or cause to be broken <lb xml:id="l11"/>off fr<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>m each of the two Veins of Ore which are represented <lb xml:id="l12"/>to be in the said Mine about Six or Eight pounds of Ore, <lb xml:id="l13"/>the breaking off of the said Ore being to be performed in the <lb xml:id="l14"/>presence of the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Haldane, and anyone or more of <lb xml:id="l15"/>his sons together with M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Drumond Warden of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l16"/>Mint at Edinburgh, or any other person whom the Earl <lb xml:id="l17"/>of Lauderdale General of the said Mint shall think fit to <lb xml:id="l18"/>send thither And you are to take Care, that the Ore which <lb xml:id="l19"/>shall be broke off in the presence of the said persons be <lb xml:id="l20"/>immediately sealed up in two papers with the respective <lb xml:id="l21"/>seals of the said persons each paper to have an Inscrip<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l22"/>tion denoting what Vein the Parcel of Ore contained <lb xml:id="l23"/>therein is taken from, which Inscriptions are to be signed <lb xml:id="l24"/>by yourselves and the aforenamed persons as Witnesses, <lb xml:id="l25"/>and then to be safely packed up and sent by the best and <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">speediest</fw><pb xml:id="p258v" n="258v"/> speediest Conveyance to the Lords Co<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">mis</hi></orig><reg>mmis</reg></choice>sioners of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l26"/>Treasury in Order to be Assayed in London.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5"><hi rend="large">You</hi> are also with the assistance and in the presence <lb xml:id="l27"/>of the persons aforenamed to break or cause to be broke off other <lb xml:id="l28"/><choice><sic>Peices</sic><corr>Pieces</corr></choice> of Ore from each of the said Veins and make Assays <lb xml:id="l29"/>thereof upon or near the place where the same shall be taken <lb xml:id="l30"/>and repeat the said Assay Once or twice if need by And the <lb xml:id="l31"/>Assays so made with Your Report thereupon are to be imme<lb xml:id="l32"/>diately sealed up (the Assays upon each Vein in district <lb xml:id="l33"/>Papers) with the respective seals of the said persons, And to <lb xml:id="l34"/>be inscribed by them in Testimony that they were made before <lb xml:id="l35"/>them, Which Assays after being so sealed Witnessed and <lb xml:id="l36"/>secured as aforesaid are also to be sent by the same Convey<lb xml:id="l37"/>ance to the said Co<choice><orig>m</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>issioners of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> Treasury.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are to give a discription in Writing of the said <lb xml:id="l38"/>two Veins as to their breadth depth and distance from One <lb xml:id="l39"/>another and to Report which way they run and what sort of <lb xml:id="l40"/>Earth or Stone they are lodged in, And what is the depth of the <lb xml:id="l41"/>Mine and the distance of each Vein from the Surface of the <lb xml:id="l42"/>Mountaine where the Mine is lodged, And whether in that <lb xml:id="l43"/>Mine there be any bed<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add> of Silver or Copper Ore besides the <lb xml:id="l44"/>said two Veins.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par7"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are in the presence and with the assistance of <lb xml:id="l45"/>the persons aforesaid to Enquire after and search for Sundry <lb xml:id="l46"/>Casks which We are informed were filled with about Forty Tons <lb xml:id="l47"/>of Ore dug out of the said Mine in the time of the late Rebellion <lb xml:id="l48"/>and buried in the Northwest side of the Lady Erskine's house <lb xml:id="l49"/>and upon finding of the said Ore to make an Assay &amp; Report <lb xml:id="l50"/>thereof in the presence of the persons aforenamed, And then to <lb xml:id="l51"/>secure the remaining Ore in such place and manner as <lb xml:id="l52"/>You with the persons aforenamed or the Major part of you <lb xml:id="l53"/>shall think fit.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par8"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are carefully to View the Burn or Channell <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">made</fw><pb xml:id="p259r" n="259r"/><fw type="pag" place="bottomLeft">259</fw> made in the Southside of the Mountaine by Floods running <lb xml:id="l54"/>down about three or four Furlongs Westward from the said <lb xml:id="l55"/>Mine and see what Sparrs and other signs of Minerals <lb xml:id="l56"/>are therein And in Case any Ores of Minerals or Mettals <lb xml:id="l57"/>be found there You are in the presence of the persons afore<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l58"/>named to Assay the same, and Report the Produce, <lb xml:id="l59"/>Witnessing Sealing up and discribing all assays to be made <lb xml:id="l60"/>by you in like manner as afore directed.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par9"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are Carefully to View all <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Erskines <lb xml:id="l61"/>part of the Mountain, and Observe what signs of Minerals <lb xml:id="l62"/>appear any where above ground, and Report what you find <lb xml:id="l63"/>as also any Credible Informations that may be given you <lb xml:id="l64"/>concerning any other Mines of Copper or Lead in that Mountain</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par10"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are also to repair to a Copper Mine which <lb xml:id="l65"/>lyes (as We are informed) about two miles Westward from <lb xml:id="l66"/>the aforesaid Mine, And procure some <choice><sic>peices</sic><corr>pieces</corr></choice> of that Ore <lb xml:id="l67"/>and make Assays thereof in the presence of the aforesaid <lb xml:id="l68"/>persons And see how much Copper and how much Silver <lb xml:id="l69"/>it holds.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par11"><hi rend="larger">Lastly</hi> You <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Hamilton are to be <lb xml:id="l70"/>Ayding and assisting to Iustus Brandshagen in all <lb xml:id="l71"/>your Observations Tryalls and Experiments, And both <lb xml:id="l72"/>of you to use your best Skill and dilligence in performing <lb xml:id="l73"/>the same And inn Case there be any other Mines within <lb xml:id="l74"/>three or four Miles of the Mine hereby meant to be tryed <lb xml:id="l75"/>You may repair thither and Examine what Silver the Ore <lb xml:id="l76"/>may Containe, And you are to make a return in Writing <lb xml:id="l77"/>of all your proceedings herein to the <choice><abbr>Co<hi rend="overline">mi</hi>ssioners</abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> of his <lb xml:id="l78"/><choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> Treasury with the utmost Expedition that may be <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
