                <p xml:id="par1"><hi rend="large">If</hi> Copper be mixed with any other base metal or semi-metal 
                    <lb xml:id="l1"/>it will not endure the hammer when red hot but fly in pieces. So soon as 
                    <lb xml:id="l2"/>it is refined by the Copper-workers to that degree as to be purged from 
                    <lb xml:id="l3"/>all other base metals, it begins to endure the hammer hen red hot 
                    <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; to be worth about 98 or 100<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> per Tunn; &amp; such copper they call fine 
                    <lb xml:id="l5"/><del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">t</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>opper. For making Copper vessels they refine it a little higher &amp; for 
                    <lb xml:id="l6"/>making wyer they refine it still higher: but for <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>oney it suffices to 
                    <lb xml:id="l7"/>refine it till it begins to beare the ham<del type="over">ne</del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>er when red hot. They that 
                    <lb xml:id="l8"/>work in Copper can readily judge of the fineness also by breaking off a 
                    <lb xml:id="l9"/>little piece &amp; observing the grain &amp; colour where it breaks. There is 
                    <lb xml:id="l10"/>also a way of <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ssaying copper by separating the other base metals from 
                    <lb xml:id="l11"/>it, but the assay by the hammer I reccon sufficient for the Mint. For it 
                    <lb xml:id="l12"/>will be proper for the Master &amp; Worker not to receive course copper &amp; 
                    <lb xml:id="l13"/>put it out to refine as is done in gold &amp; silver but only to receive<del type="cancelled">d</del> it 
                    <lb xml:id="l14"/>when refined to the degree above mentioned</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">In the reign of King Charles II a pound weight of Swedish Copper 
                    <lb xml:id="l15"/><del type="strikethrough">cost <gap reason="hand" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> was cut into 20<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. The copper &amp; making the blancks cost 18<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>, the 
                    <lb xml:id="l16"/>stamping <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">1</add><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>, &amp; a penny remained for other charges.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">A pound weight of fine English copper such as will endure the 
                    <lb xml:id="l17"/>assay above mentioned will cost 10<formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> or 10<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>3</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula> &amp;  coynage will cost 5<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula> or 
                    <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l18"/>5<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>3</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> including the work of the Smith &amp; Graver, so that the whole 
                    <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l19"/>charge of copper &amp; coinag<tei:del xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="over" indicator="no">e</tei:add> will scarce exceed 16<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> per pound weight 
                    <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l20"/>averdupois. And if the same be edged the edging will cost a penny more. 
                    <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l21"/>And if a pound weight not edged be cut into 19<tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> or a pound weight edged 
                    <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l22"/>be cut into 20<tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> there will remain 2<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula> per pound weight for purchas<tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="hyphenated" xml:id="l23"/>ing Mills &amp; Presses &amp; setting up <tei:del xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="over" indicator="no">a</tei:add> Copper Min<tei:del xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="over" indicator="no">t</tei:add> &amp; paying Clerks &amp; 
                    <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l24"/>incident charges of Assaying, weighing, telling, Porters <tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="supralinear" indicator="yes">putting off</tei:add> &amp;c</p>
                
                <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par4">The Mills Presses &amp; other Engins for setting up a Copper Mint 
                    <tei:lb xml:id="l25"/>will cost six or seven hundred pounds. And thre<tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">e</tei:add> farthings per pound 
                    <tei:lb xml:id="l26"/>weight in coining an hundred Tunns will pay that charge. And when 
                    <tei:lb xml:id="l27"/>a Copper Mint is set up, a pound weight of copper may be cut into 18<tei:formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> 
                    <tei:lb xml:id="l28"/>or 18<tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> not edged, or a penny more if edged.</tei:p>
                
                <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par5">The weight of all the Copper received, &amp; the weight &amp; tale of all the 
                    <tei:lb xml:id="l29"/>copper money coined &amp; made fit for delivery to be entred in Books &amp; in the <tei:lb xml:id="l30"/>Master &amp; Workers account, &amp; the surplus to be paid into <tei:choice><tei:abbr>y<tei:hi rend="superscript">e</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>the</tei:expan></tei:choice> Exchequer.</tei:p>
