                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">May it <choice><abbr>pl.</abbr><expan>please</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice>, <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">Amongst all the Petitioners for the place of Weigher &amp; Teller, whose Petitions <lb xml:id="l1"/>are referred to us I have most experience of <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">the</add> abilities of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haynes. The <lb xml:id="l2"/>allegations in his Petition are true &amp; while he acted in the Mint he had there <lb xml:id="l3"/>a general reputation for integrity, diligence, sobriety, good humour &amp; readiness <lb xml:id="l4"/>in business &amp; have been <del type="strikethrough">long</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">about 14 years</add> amongst us he is skilled in all the business <lb xml:id="l5"/>of the Mint &amp; in the time of recoyning the hammered money did great <lb xml:id="l6"/>service. In these accounts the Officers of the Mint (M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l7"/>Hall <del type="cancelled">&amp; my self</del> mentioned in the Petition &amp; my self) then recommended <lb xml:id="l8"/>him earnestly to the Lords <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> of his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Tre<hi rend="overline">a</hi>ry</abbr><expan>Treasury</expan></choice> as a very fit <lb xml:id="l9"/>person to execute the Office of Comptroller under the two late Comp<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l10"/>trollers in that time of great business, &amp; when the Comptrollers insisted <lb xml:id="l11"/>on M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Beresford a stranger, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haynes was appointed to take care <lb xml:id="l12"/>of the Comptroller's business till M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Beresford could qualify himself. <lb xml:id="l13"/>After the <choice><sic>reccoynage</sic><corr>recoynage</corr></choice> of the hammered money was over M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haynes <lb xml:id="l14"/>was imployed in the Excise Office by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hall above mentioned <lb xml:id="l15"/>who is able to give a further <del type="strikethrough">account</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">character</add> of his abilities &amp; behaviour <lb xml:id="l16"/>in both Officers<add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add><del type="cancelled">:</del> Yet M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale till his death <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Decemb. 99</add> continued him his <lb xml:id="l17"/>Clerk <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a salary of 100<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">an</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> in recompence of his services <lb xml:id="l18"/><add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; <del type="strikethrough">making up</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">examining &amp; <unclear>seeking</unclear></add> the <choice><abbr>Aco<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Acounts</expan></choice> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> five Country Mints.</add> <lb xml:id="l19"/>On account of his abilities I have ever since wished for him back <lb xml:id="l20"/>into the Mint &amp; if he be not now brought back (as he has been <lb xml:id="l21"/>once already at a time when we could not be <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out him) some <lb xml:id="l22"/>person unskilled in <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> business will instead of him come amongst <lb xml:id="l23"/><del type="strikethrough">us a success <unclear>until</unclear> the late Weigher &amp; Teller</del> <add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">other <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> Tellers place or into</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">either to succeed the late weighers</del></add><add place="infralinear" indicator="no">us to succeed either in the place of the late weigher &amp; Teller or in</add> the place <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> his successor shall</add> <del type="strikethrough">or the new one.</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">the Wardens</del></add> <add place="lineBeginning infralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">Wardens Deputy.</del></add><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">leave</add> <lb xml:id="l24"/>If any of the<del type="cancelled">ir</del> Principal Officers or their Clerks or Deputies should <lb xml:id="l25"/>at any time die or leave the Mint M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haynes is qualified to <lb xml:id="l26"/>assist till the place can be supplied anew that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> business of <lb xml:id="l27"/>the Mint receive no stop. For we want men of skill.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">If any other Competitor thinks himself equally qualified in <lb xml:id="l28"/>Mint affairs I desire that his character may by any friend who <lb xml:id="l29"/>best knows it be put into the hands of the Officers of the <lb xml:id="l30"/>Mint that we may examin it <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by tryall</add> &amp; make a true report <del type="strikethrough">thereof</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">of his skill</add> to <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l31"/><choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice>. But of the qualifications of such Petitioners as <del type="strikethrough">have not <lb xml:id="l32"/>been conversant</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">are not versed</add> in <del type="cancelled">the</del> Mint affairs we do not pre<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">sum</add>e to judge. <lb xml:id="l33"/><del type="blockStrikethrough">They are recommended to <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> by <del type="over">p</del><add place="over" indicator="no">P</add>ersons better able to <lb xml:id="l34"/>judge of their disposition &amp; capacity in generall then we are. <lb xml:id="l35"/>What skill men have attained to we can know by seeing them <lb xml:id="l36"/>use it but what <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">t</unclear></del>he<del type="strikethrough">y</del> will attain to hereafter <del type="strikethrough">&amp; in what time</del> we are <lb xml:id="l37"/>not able to foretell, <del type="strikethrough">We</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; therefore</add> reccon it a very great advantage to be actually <lb xml:id="l38"/>skilled in <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> business</del></p>

                <p xml:id="par6">Herodotus <del type="strikethrough">represents</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">tells us</add> that there were two famous Queens of Babylon, Se<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>vanis &amp; Nitocris <del type="strikethrough">above</del> <lb xml:id="l39"/><del type="strikethrough">above mentioned</del> &amp; that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> latter was <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> more skilfull. <del type="cancelled">She</del><add place="inline" indicator="no"><hi rend="superscript">+</hi></add>

                    The river <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was str<del type="over"><unclear reason="del">a</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>ght before <lb xml:id="l43"/>made <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> crooked <del type="strikethrough">that it might flow more sedately &amp;</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> great windings that it might <del type="strikethrough">be less apt to <lb xml:id="l44"/>flow</del> be less apt to overflow, &amp; above Babylon dug a Lake <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/> <unclear reason="del">Stadia</unclear></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Every way</add> 40 miles broad to keep <lb xml:id="l45"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">receive</add> the water of the river <del type="strikethrough">as <unclear>a mist</unclear> a d</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in spring &amp; keep it</add> for watering the <del type="strikethrough">ground</del><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> land. <del type="strikethrough">And turning the River <lb xml:id="l46"/>she built <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del></add> a Bridge over it<add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">channel</del></add> in Babylon &amp; then</del> She built also a bridge over it in Babylon <lb xml:id="l47"/>tur<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>ing <del type="strikethrough">into another channel</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the stream into the Lake</add> till the Bridge was built. Philostratus says that she made a <lb xml:id="l48"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><gap reason="copy" unit="chars" extent="2"/> veta</add> <add place="inline" indicator="no">Apollo</add> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no"><gap reason="copy" unit="chars" extent="3"/></add> bridge under the River two fathomes broad, meaning a<add place="inline" indicator="no">n</add> <del type="strikethrough">cave</del> arched cave over which the <lb xml:id="l49"/>river flowed. He calls her <del type="cancelled">Med</del> <foreign xml:lang="gre">Μηδεια</foreign> that is a Mede.
