                <p xml:id="par1">18 Car. II, chap. v. No moneys leviable &amp; payable by this Act  shall be con<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l1"/>verted to any other use or uses whatsoever other then t<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add> the defraying the <lb xml:id="l2"/>charge or expence of the Mint or Mints, &amp; <del type="blockStrikethrough">[that]</del>  of the assaying melting down <lb xml:id="l3"/>&amp; wast &amp; coynage <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>f gold &amp; silver  <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> the encouragement of bringing in of gold <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; silver to be coyned &amp;c. 
                    <del type="blockStrikethrough">[The first I take to be  the charge of supporting a <lb xml:id="l5"/>standing Mint, the second to be the further charge of carrying on the coynage <lb xml:id="l6"/>in that Mint. And by the next  clause of the Act the first is limited to <lb xml:id="l7"/>3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> f<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">or</add> preventing extravagan<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">e</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>e, the other left unlimited &amp; appropri<lb xml:id="l8"/>ated to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> coyn<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ge for encouraging the same. The words are]</del> 
                    And it is here<lb xml:id="l9"/>by further enacted, That there shall not be issued out of the <del type="cancelled">coynage</del> <lb xml:id="l10"/>Exchequer of the said <del type="strikethrough">coynage</del> moneys in any one year for the fees &amp; <lb xml:id="l11"/>salaries of the Officers of the  Mint or Mints &amp; towards the providing <lb xml:id="l12"/>maintaining &amp; repairing  of the houses Offices &amp; Buildings &amp; other <lb xml:id="l13"/><del type="blockStrikethrough">[standing]</del> necessaries for  assaying melting down &amp; <del type="strikethrough">coyn<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ge &amp; buying <lb xml:id="l14"/>in of gold &amp; silver t</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">coyning</add> above the summ of three thousand  pounds sterling <lb xml:id="l15"/>money, &amp; the overplus of the said moneys so kept  as aforesaid, shall <lb xml:id="l16"/>be employed for &amp; towards the <del type="blockStrikethrough">[contingent]</del>  expence wast &amp; charge <lb xml:id="l17"/>of assaying melting down &amp; coynage &amp;  buying in of gold &amp; silver to <del type="cancelled">be</del> <lb xml:id="l18"/>coyne<del type="cancelled">d</del> &amp; n<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>t otherwise. 
                    <del type="blockStrikethrough">[Here <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">o</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>y  other necessaries I understand things <lb xml:id="l19"/>necessary for constituting a standing Mint, as a convenient Hearths &amp; <lb xml:id="l20"/>chimneys for Assaying <add place="inline" indicator="no">&amp;</add> melting, a convenient closet for the Assay-<lb xml:id="l21"/>scales, Locks for the doors, Gates <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>o <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint &amp;c. These &amp; the <lb xml:id="l22"/>buildings come into the Wardens Account, the charges of a current <lb xml:id="l23"/>coynage into the Masters.</del></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">The salaries from the time of making this Act have amounted to  <lb xml:id="l24"/>2600<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; sometimes above &amp; there have remained only 400<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l25"/>for the buildings &amp; other necessaries. And the buildings alone have <lb xml:id="l26"/>usually amounted to two or three hundred &amp; sometimes almost four hundred pounds <lb xml:id="l27"/>per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">In the 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> &amp; 5<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> year of her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> another Act passed for  enlarg<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">m</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">in</add>g <lb xml:id="l28"/>the summ of 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> to that of 3500<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out  making any other <lb xml:id="l29"/>alteration in the former Act. And thereupon the  Moneyers were allowed <lb xml:id="l30"/><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add> salary of 400<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice>, &amp; the salarys of the Clerks  were intended <lb xml:id="l31"/>to be <del type="strikethrough">allowed</del> augmented. But several buildings being ready to be aug<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l32"/>mented it was thought fit to rebuild them first. And these have <lb xml:id="l33"/>cost  about 900<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> or above. Two years ago the Engineers  shop was <lb xml:id="l34"/>rebuilt &amp; cost about 359<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>, whereof <del type="over">3</del><add place="over" indicator="no">1</add>83<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> comes  into the Account <lb xml:id="l35"/>of the year 1712 &amp; 176 is reserved for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> next year</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">In <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Indenture of the Mint there is a clause that the  <lb xml:id="l36"/>charges of making the bullion agreable to standard shall be born  &amp; <lb xml:id="l37"/>sustained out of the Revenue arising to her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> by vertue <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">of</add> <lb xml:id="l38"/>the coynage Act: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> clause would have been <del type="strikethrough">useless</del> needless had <lb xml:id="l39"/>that charge  been recconed within the 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. This clause is a <lb xml:id="l40"/>voucher for the charges of <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ssaying &amp; allay. The Act of 18 Car II <lb xml:id="l41"/>is a Voucher for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> charges of the Assay Office. And the standing <lb xml:id="l42"/>practise of placing the charge of furnaces in th<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">is</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> <choice><abbr>Acc<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Account</expan></choice> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Master</expan></choice> &amp; <lb xml:id="l43"/><choice><abbr>W<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Worker</expan></choice> is a Voucher for that Article</p>
