                <p xml:id="par1">A Question being moved about a clause in the Gravers Patent, I humbly <lb xml:id="l1"/>beg leave to lay <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the matter</add> before <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice><add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> <del type="strikethrough">that</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">All Gravers having a liberty to make Medals where they are not <lb xml:id="l2"/>restrained by the <choice><abbr>Governm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Government</expan></choice> <choice><sic>the Gravers of the Mint for their</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> <choice><orig><del type="over">t</del><add place="over" indicator="no">T</add></orig><reg>t</reg></choice>he Gravers for their encouragement <lb xml:id="l3"/><del type="strikethrough">&amp; for restraining the liberty of making Medals with the effigies of <add place="inline" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">K</add>ing or <lb xml:id="l4"/>Queen</del> have be a clause in their Patent been allowed &amp; all others <lb xml:id="l5"/>prohibited <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">or</unclear></del></add> to make <del type="strikethrough">such</del> Medals <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">with the effigies of the <choice><orig>K.</orig><reg>King</reg></choice> or <choice><orig>Q.</orig><reg>Queen</reg></choice></add>. And this Office of Medal-maker to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Crown <lb xml:id="l6"/>has been sometimes encouraged by a large salary out of the Civil List, &amp; <lb xml:id="l7"/>sometimes granted to strangers &amp; is no<del type="cancelled">t</del> part of the constitution of the <lb xml:id="l8"/>Mint. For by the standing constitution of the Mint, <del type="blockStrikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>the Master &amp; Worker <lb xml:id="l9"/>imploys not the Graver <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to melt &amp; coyn</add> but<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add></del> the Moneyers <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">to</unclear></del> coyne what ever the <del type="strikethrough">Gr<del type="cancelled">a</del>ver</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Government</add> has <lb xml:id="l10"/>occasion for whether <del type="over">m</del><add place="over" indicator="no">M</add>oney Medals or Healing pieces, the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">metal</add> weight allay and <lb xml:id="l11"/>form of the <del type="over">m</del><add place="over" indicator="no">M</add>oney &amp; Medals being first appointed by the King or Queen by <lb xml:id="l12"/>advice of the Council, &amp; the Graver only mak<del type="over">in</del><add place="over" indicator="no">es</add><del type="cancelled">g</del> the stamps.  Now if for <lb xml:id="l13"/>saving her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> &amp; the Council the trouble of giving <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">particular</add> Orders about such <lb xml:id="l14"/>Medals as the Government has <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">no</add> occasion for, &amp; for encouraging the Graver <lb xml:id="l15"/><add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">the Gravers</del> of the Mint <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del></add> to improve themselves <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del></add> to be content with less salaries it be <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> thought fit <lb xml:id="l16"/>to continue this Office or Privilege <del type="strikethrough">of Medal-maker to the crown</del> to the <lb xml:id="l17"/>Gravers: <del type="strikethrough">we are</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">I am</add> humbly of opinion that the Gravers be obliged to set th<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">is</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ei</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">r</add> <lb xml:id="l18"/>name or the first letters thereof upon th<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">is</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ei</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">r</add> <del type="strikethrough">own</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">own</add> Medals to distinguish them <lb xml:id="l19"/>from Medals made by the Queens Mint. <del type="over">H</del><add place="over" indicator="no">Th</add>e<add place="inline" indicator="no">y</add> may be also <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>estrained from <lb xml:id="l20"/>dispersing them before a specimen of them has been shewed to your <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> or your Order</add> <lb xml:id="l21"/><choice><sic>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></sic><corr type="delText">Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></corr></choice><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">even</add> from making medals <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del> relating to state affairs</add> or be otherwise limited as her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> shall think fit. And <del type="strikethrough">if <lb xml:id="l22"/>it should be thought fit upon any <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del">emergent</unclear></del></add> occasion, to restrain <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">then</unclear></del><add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="no">when <lb xml:id="l23"/><del type="strikethrough">it shall</del> <add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">ever</add> the Government pleases to <del type="strikethrough">have any</del> <del type="strikethrough">Medals to prohibit the Graver coined by the Mint</del></add> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no"><choice><sic>to</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> order the the coynage of a Medal</add> I am ready <lb xml:id="l24"/>to coyn <del type="strikethrough">such Medalls as her Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi> shall Order</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">them by her Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi> Warrant</del></add><add place="infralinear" indicator="no">it according to the course of the Mint</add> as in the case of coronation <lb xml:id="l25"/>Medals &amp; to deliver any number of <del type="strikethrough">them</del><add place="infralinear" indicator="no">such Medals</add> to <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> Order. 
                    
                    <del type="blockStrikethrough">But should <lb xml:id="l26"/>the Graver's melting &amp; coyning be made a part of the constitution of the Mint <lb xml:id="l27"/>the alteration in the constitution would be fundamental &amp; might tend to <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del">confuse.</unclear></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">confusion</add> <lb xml:id="l28"/><add place="inline" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; to bring the Mint into <del type="cancelled">dis<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/> dis<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> discredit. &amp; <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/> &amp; <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del></add> 
                        <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">All <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> &amp;c</add>
                        And I humbly conceive her Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi> <lb xml:id="l29"/>warrant to be requisite for the safety &amp; credit of the Mint &amp; that its best to have it <lb xml:id="l30"/>by advice of the Council according to ancient customs. But <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out her Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi> Warrant for <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">every</add> <lb xml:id="l31"/>particular <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">sort of</add> coyn I humbly conceive it is not <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">creditable nor</add> safe for the Mint to act, nor proper <lb xml:id="l32"/>for me as Master &amp; W<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> to <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>oyne by <del type="strikethrough">any other hands then the Moneyers</del> the <lb xml:id="l33"/>Gravers.<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add></del>
                    
                    But to alter the course of the Mint <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">by making the Gravers privelege a part of the constitution</del></add> or to place in the Mint an arbitrary power <lb xml:id="l34"/>of coyning Medals, or to give <del type="strikethrough">the Gravers</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to any</add> Medals <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">not approved by <add place="inline" indicator="no">t</add>he<del type="strikethrough">r Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></del> Government</add> the credit of being coyned by the Mint may <lb xml:id="l35"/><del type="strikethrough">be of ill</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">have <unclear reason="hand">bad</unclear></add> consequence<add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add><del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="strikethrough">All <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">I humbly conceive</add> its better that <del type="strikethrough">the clause in</del> the Gravers <del type="strikethrough">Patent is to</del> Privi<lb xml:id="l36"/>lege be taken <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>way, &amp; the coynage of Medals left to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> c<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>urse of the Mint</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">The Gravers of the Mint do hereby give notice that their privilege of <lb xml:id="l37"/>making Medals <del type="strikethrough">for the Queens Effigies<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">,</unclear></del></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></del></add> <add place="inline" indicator="no">be</add>i<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">g</add> no part of the constitution of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l38"/>Mint; <del type="strikethrough">&amp; that <add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>for distinguishing their Medals from Medals made by the Mint</del> <lb xml:id="l39"/>they will for the future set their names or the first letters thereof <lb xml:id="l40"/>upon <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">all</add> thei<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add> own Medals to distinguish them from Medals made by the <del type="cancelled">Queens</del> <lb xml:id="l41"/>Mint</p>
