                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par1"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">Westmor<hi rend="overline">ld</hi> Ss.</add> The <choice><abbr>Exai<hi rend="overline">aio</hi>n</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> and Confession of <persName>John Hamond</persName> of <placeName>Preston <lb xml:id="l1"/>in the County of York</placeName> taken upon Oath before <persName>James Grahm</persName> <lb xml:id="l2"/>of <placeName>Levens</placeName> <choice><abbr>Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Esquire</expan></choice> &amp;c.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi><hi rend="superscript">t</hi> <date>this 4.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of November 1704</date>.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Who upon his Oath informeth and saith that <persName>Francis Lodge Sen<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</persName> &amp; <persName>Francis <lb xml:id="l3"/>Lodge jun<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</persName> of <placeName>Walborn Hall in the County of York</placeName> do follow the calling &amp; trade <lb xml:id="l4"/>of covering and plateing New-mony, and that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> last year being 1703 five weeks before <choice><abbr>Mic<hi rend="overline">h</hi>mas</abbr><expan>Michaelmas</expan></choice> they gave me 16.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> of Counterfeit Money, to dispose <lb xml:id="l5"/>and disperse, where I could best vend it, and that they would give me <lb xml:id="l6"/>1.<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> <choice><abbr>ꝑ</abbr><expan>per</expan></choice> pound for vending and disposing it, and that I paid <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="illgbl" cert="medium">A</unclear></del> Some of it to <lb xml:id="l7"/><persName>Abr<hi rend="overline">am</hi> Goodgion</persName> Receiver of the Queens Revenues, and Some of it was Cutt <lb xml:id="l8"/>and with the rest I bought 2. Stotts of <persName>William Wetherill</persName> of <placeName>Bellarby</placeName>, &amp; <lb xml:id="l9"/>in <choice><abbr>paym.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>payment</expan></choice> I gave him 20.<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> above the Market price, for takeing Counterfeit <lb xml:id="l10"/>money he knowing it to be such.<space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="2"/> <hi rend="large">Hee</hi> further deposeth that <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> what <lb xml:id="l11"/>remained he bought Beasts of <persName>Robert Pearson</persName> of <placeName>Bellarby</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l12"/>and in <choice><abbr>paym.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>payment</expan></choice> I have him 15.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> above <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Market price, for takeing coun<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l13"/>terfeit money he knowing it to be Such. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="3"/><hi rend="large">Hee</hi> further deposeth <lb xml:id="l14"/>that <persName>Ralph Metcalfe</persName> of <placeName>Preston in Wensedale</placeName> Weaver in <placeName><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> County of York</placeName> <lb xml:id="l15"/>hath Severall times given him five pounds and Severall Sum̄es of <choice><abbr>Counterf.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Counterfeit</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l16"/>money, he knowing it to be such to disperse and dispose off where I could <lb xml:id="l17"/>best vend it. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="4"/> <hi rend="larger">And</hi> that I have seen <persName>Francis Lodge the Elder &amp; Younger</persName> <lb xml:id="l18"/>coyn and cover New money in their West Parlour at <placeName>Walburn Hall</placeName> <lb xml:id="l19"/>and that they lay'd their Tooles in a little Trunk under a bed, in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l20"/>Same Roome, and that they melt in a Chamber over <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great Hall, in <lb xml:id="l21"/>a little Iron pain with a pair of Hand Bellows. <hi rend="larger">And</hi> this Deponent <lb xml:id="l22"/>further sayes that he has seen the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> two <persName>Lodges</persName> Coyn, Cover &amp; Stamp <lb xml:id="l23"/>new moneys one hundred times. And that he has seen <persName>Ralph Metcalfe</persName> <lb xml:id="l24"/>of <placeName>Preston</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> coyn cover &amp; Stamp twenty times, And that I see <lb xml:id="l25"/>him within a week past, coyn cover and Stamp new money in <lb xml:id="l26"/>his own house, and his tooles lyes in a milk house under a dresser</p>
                <p xml:id="par3">This <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> further saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he see the 2. <persName>Lodges</persName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> coyn <lb xml:id="l27"/>cover and Stamp new money in a Chamber over <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> great hall, to <lb xml:id="l28"/>the sum̄e of 100.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> by tale, on <date>the 3.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> day of Septem<hi rend="overline">b</hi> last</date>, and <choice><sic>the</sic><corr>they</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l29"/>paid me 12.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> of it, giveing me 1.<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> <choice><abbr>ꝑ <hi rend="overline">lib</hi></abbr><expan>per pound</expan></choice> to disperse, and dispose of it <lb xml:id="l30"/>where I could best vend it. <hi rend="large">And</hi> that <persName>Rob.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Sturrey</persName>, <persName>Henry Janson</persName> <lb xml:id="l31"/>Farmers of <placeName>Bolton</placeName> under <persName>the Duke of Bolton</persName> did disperse and <lb xml:id="l32"/>dispose of above 80.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same knowing it to be Counterfeit <lb xml:id="l33"/>money. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="5"/><hi rend="larger">This</hi> <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> further says that <persName>Gyles Ellerton</persName> of <lb xml:id="l34"/><placeName>Cawdstorms house in the parish of Downholm in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> County of York</placeName> <lb xml:id="l35"/>doth Cover Coyn and Stamp new money, and that he hath Seen <lb xml:id="l36"/>him do the same, And that I have Dispersed severall sum̄s for <lb xml:id="l37"/>him, <choice><abbr>ꝑticularly</abbr><expan>particularly</expan></choice> to <persName>Tho<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> Robinson</persName> of <placeName>West Witton in Wensley parish</placeName> <lb xml:id="l38"/>Skimmer, and to <persName>John Tirry</persName> <placeName>near Bolton Hall</placeName> Taylor, &amp; to <persName>Matthew <lb xml:id="l39"/><del type="cancelled">Reynolsson</del> Reynoldson</persName> of <placeName>Preston <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> all within the County of <lb xml:id="l40"/>York</placeName>, they knowing it to be Counterfeit money took it, to disperse &amp; <lb xml:id="l41"/>dispose of it were they could best vend it. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="4"/> <hi rend="larger">This</hi> <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> says <lb xml:id="l42"/>he doth not know of any more men in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> part, which does Coyn <lb xml:id="l43"/>cover and Stamp New Money. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="3"/> <hi rend="larger">And</hi> this <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> further sayes that <lb xml:id="l44"/><persName>Marmaduke Robinson</persName> <placeName>near Middleton, in the County of Westmorland</placeName> <lb xml:id="l45"/>doth coyn, cover, Stamp and plate new money which I have Seen him <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">do in a</fw>

This <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> further sayes that the Silver <lb xml:id="l47"/>found about him was given him by <persName>Mathew Beaper</persName> of <placeName>Preston</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l48"/>to be vended by me in <placeName>Westmorland</placeName>, and to carry it to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>- Dixon</persName> Inkeeper <lb xml:id="l49"/>of <placeName>Barebon</placeName> to disperse and dispose of it, to the best End for Malt who has <lb xml:id="l50"/><choice><abbr>rec.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> 20.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> of me before, on <date>the 24.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of August last</date>, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Money he <lb xml:id="l51"/>did dispose off and dispersed and Accounted to me for the same, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> false Mony <lb xml:id="l52"/>the said <persName>Mathew Beaper</persName> did coyn Stamp cover in my presence <lb xml:id="l53"/>and that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Dixon</persName> did know the same to be counterfeit money <lb xml:id="l54"/>And further saith upon his Oath that the Gold that was found <choice><abbr>ab.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l55"/>me was given me by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Thomas Lambert</persName> of <placeName>Bainbridge in Wesedale <lb xml:id="l56"/>in the parish of Askrigg in the County of York</placeName>, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I was to carry to <lb xml:id="l57"/><persName>John Fort</persName> of <placeName>Gargrave in Craven</placeName> in the said County <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was to buy Sheep <lb xml:id="l58"/>withall and other Goods it being all Counterfeit Gold, and given for Such by <lb xml:id="l59"/>the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Lambert</persName>, he promising me 1.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> in the <del type="cancelled">pound</del> Guinea for Vending <lb xml:id="l60"/>it, haveing severall times vended such money for the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Lambert</persName> before. <lb xml:id="l61"/>he haveing imploy'd me for severall years, And that I have seen him <lb xml:id="l62"/>Stamp and cover Gold severall times, at his own house in <placeName>Bainbridge</placeName> <lb xml:id="l63"/>in the East Parlour, Laying his Tooles and Stamps under a pair of <lb xml:id="l64"/>staires in a little Coffers, I seeing him coyne One hundred Guineas on <date>the <lb xml:id="l65"/>Sixth day of October last past</date>. And further saith that <persName>Mathew Hamond</persName> <lb xml:id="l66"/>of <placeName>Preston</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> did give me 20.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> of Counterfeit money to disperse and <lb xml:id="l67"/>dispose of where I could best vend it. I brought it and <choice><abbr>ꝑ<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>paid</expan></choice> it to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Hardy</persName> <lb xml:id="l68"/>of <placeName>Casterton near Kirkby Lonsdale</placeName>, he took it as counterfeit Money to buy <lb xml:id="l69"/>sheep and he had one shulling in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pound for vending it.</p>
                <p xml:id="par4">This <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> further saith that <persName>Thomas Loftus</persName> and <persName>Thomas Ham̄ond</persName> <lb xml:id="l70"/>liveing at <placeName>Middlesmore in Yorkshire</placeName> gave him 40.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> knowing it to be <lb xml:id="l71"/>counterfeit money to carry to <persName>John Foster</persName> of <placeName>Askrigg</placeName> aforesaid Storkiner <lb xml:id="l72"/>which he <choice><abbr>rec.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> from me on <date>the 5.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of May last</date> he knowing it <lb xml:id="l73"/>to be Counterfeit money, and he was to have 1.<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Pound for <lb xml:id="l74"/>uttering of it, which accordingly he did. This <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> further saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l75"/><persName>Christopher Buckle</persName> of <placeName>Preston in the County of York</placeName> did give unto <lb xml:id="l76"/>me <persName>John Hamond</persName> Sixty pounds of Counterfeit money upon <date>the 19.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> <lb xml:id="l77"/>of October last</date>, to carry into <placeName>Westmorland</placeName> to one <persName>Edm.<hi rend="superscript">o</hi> Didgson</persName> near <lb xml:id="l78"/><placeName>Casterton Malster in the parish of Kirkby Lonsdale</placeName>, to buy Barley <lb xml:id="l79"/>withall, which money I gave unto his own hands <choice><sic>as</sic><corr>at</corr></choice> his own house <lb xml:id="l80"/><date>on the Second Instant</date> (none being p<hi rend="superscript">re</hi>sent but his wife) <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> money <lb xml:id="l81"/>he was to Disperse knowing it to be counterfeit money, and <lb xml:id="l82"/>for the disposing whereof he was to have one Shilling in the <lb xml:id="l83"/>pound. I have seen the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Christoper Buckle</persName> and <persName>Elizabeth his <lb xml:id="l84"/>daughter</persName>, coyn Stamp and Cover, Severall great sum̄s of Money <lb xml:id="l85"/>(which he this <choice><abbr>Depon.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> has dispersed for him) in his East Parlour, lying <lb xml:id="l86"/>his Tools in an Old Hopper in dark Chamber over his fire house.</p>
