                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par1"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">Westm<hi rend="superscript">ld</hi> Ss.</add> The <choice><abbr>Ex<hi rend="overline">am</hi>:</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> of <persName>John Ham̄ond</persName> of <placeName>Preston near Bolton in the County <lb xml:id="l1"/>of York</placeName> taken before <persName>J. Grahm</persName> of <placeName>Levens</placeName> <choice><abbr>Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Esquire</expan></choice> &amp;c.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi><hi rend="superscript">t</hi> this <date>4.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Nov.<hi rend="superscript">er</hi> 1704</date>.</p>
                <p xml:id="par2">He being <choice><abbr>bro.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>brought</expan></choice> before me by <persName>Ro<hi rend="overline">bt</hi> Thornbeck</persName> Constable of <placeName>Middleton</placeName> in this County <lb xml:id="l2"/>as being found beging and asking of Alms. Hee sayes that he came there <lb xml:id="l3"/>to avoyd being arrested, but there being found in his breeches Wast band, and <lb xml:id="l4"/>in a bagg to the vallue of 36.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> as he calls it, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> gave great <choice><abbr>Sup<hi rend="overline">ion</hi></abbr><expan>Suspicion</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l5"/>that he was a Coyner or vender of false and Counterfeit money, he <lb xml:id="l6"/>owns himself to have been an Inhabitant of <placeName>Preston</placeName> aforesaid, &amp; <lb xml:id="l7"/>to have follow'd Husbandry, and had a Farm under the <persName>Duke of Bolton</persName> <lb xml:id="l8"/>of 20.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> <choice><abbr>ꝑ an̄</abbr><expan>per annum</expan></choice>, and that <choice><abbr>ab.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3. weeks before <choice><abbr>Mich<hi rend="overline">mas</hi></abbr><expan>Michaelmas</expan></choice> they threatned to <lb xml:id="l9"/>seize him for arreares of rent, so he saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he sold Good Slotts &amp; Why's <lb xml:id="l10"/>and sold also unto <persName>Thomas Lambert</persName> of <placeName>Bainbridge</placeName> Ten Steers for which he <lb xml:id="l11"/><choice><abbr>ꝑd</abbr><expan>paid</expan></choice> him in Gold 17:<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> 7:<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> g.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> or thereabouts and sold to <persName>Francis Lodge</persName> of <placeName>Walburn<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l12"/>hall</placeName> 8. Steers for which he <choice><abbr>rec<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> 12.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> - and that he <choice><abbr>rec<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> the <lb xml:id="l13"/>Silver money now found upon him of the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Francis Lodge</persName>, and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l14"/>he sold the Steeres not in any Pasture but upon <placeName>Preston Moore</placeName>, <lb xml:id="l15"/>and <choice><abbr>rec<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> the money of <persName>Lodge</persName> at <placeName>Walburn Hall</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> and that he <choice><abbr>rec<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> of <lb xml:id="l16"/><persName>Giles Elletson</persName> of <placeName>Cawdstones house in the parish of Dowham in Swaledale</placeName> <lb xml:id="l17"/>7:<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> 10:<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> 0<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> for 6. Why's &amp; 2. Cowes <choice><abbr>ꝑt</abbr><expan>part</expan></choice> of it in Guineas &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rest of his Goods were <lb xml:id="l18"/>Seized on by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Law</persName> the <choice><abbr>D.</abbr><expan>Deputy</expan></choice> of <placeName>Bolton</placeName>s Steward, being asked what he design'd <lb xml:id="l19"/>to do with this money he <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> he designed to pay 15.<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> to <persName>W.<hi rend="superscript">m</hi> Lonsdale</persName>, <persName>Fran:<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> Lonsdale</persName> <lb xml:id="l20"/>and <persName>Francis Morland</persName> all of <placeName>Bellerby in the County of York</placeName> and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he intended <lb xml:id="l21"/>to pay to <persName>Tho:<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> Freare</persName> of <placeName>Bolton Castle</placeName> and <persName>Tho.<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> Ham̄ond</persName> of the same town, the <lb xml:id="l22"/>rest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> money &amp; Gold found upon him as <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> and being asked whether any <lb xml:id="l23"/>of the <choice><abbr>aforemen'd</abbr><expan>aforementioned</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>ꝑson</abbr><expan>person</expan></choice><supplied reason="omitted" cert="high">s</supplied> who <choice><abbr>p.<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>paid</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> money, did direct him to pay it to any <lb xml:id="l24"/><choice><abbr>ꝑticular</abbr><expan>particular</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>ꝑson</abbr><expan>person</expan></choice>, he answered that he would hang himselfe before he <lb xml:id="l25"/>would hang anybody else, being asked why he <choice><abbr>bro<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>brought</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">s</hi></abbr><expan>this</expan></choice> mony hither, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he says he <lb xml:id="l26"/>desig'd to pay at <placeName>Bellerby</placeName> <choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> he answered that he had no friend to <lb xml:id="l27"/>leave it withall <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="25"/><hi rend="large"><persName>John Ham̄ond</persName></hi> <lb xml:id="l28"/><foreign xml:lang="lat">Capt. coram me</foreign> <hi rend="large"><persName>J Grahm</persName>.</hi>
