                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par1"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">London Ss.</add> The <choice><abbr>Exai<hi rend="overline">aio</hi>n</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> of <persName>Lewis la Coude</persName> bookkeeper to <persName>Charles <lb xml:id="l1"/>Augustine Berth</persName> <choice><abbr>Marc.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Marchant</expan></choice> in <placeName>Mark layn Lond.<hi rend="superscript">o</hi></placeName> taken upon <lb xml:id="l2"/>Oath before The Record<hi rend="superscript">er</hi> &amp;c<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. this <date>25. <hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of July 1704</date>.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Who saith that about last may was 3. Years he this Examinant <lb xml:id="l3"/>came into <placeName>England</placeName>, and about 7. months after that time he entered <lb xml:id="l4"/>as Bookkeeper to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName>, and some few months afterwards he <lb xml:id="l5"/>this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> began to lodge and diet at his house, but never made <lb xml:id="l6"/>any <choice><abbr>agreem.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>agreement</expan></choice> for wages with the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName>, and further saith that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l7"/>said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> hath bought severall Quantities of Silver Ingotts of diverse <lb xml:id="l8"/>persons, but cannot remember their names; But sayes that he this <lb xml:id="l9"/><choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> did Enter the same down into abook or books, as he the <lb xml:id="l10"/><choice><abbr>afores<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>aforesaid</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> gave directions to him from time to time, but <lb xml:id="l11"/>cannot tell whether he this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> had a full and <choice><abbr>ꝑfect</abbr><expan>perfect</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Acco.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Account</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l12"/>of all the Silver Ingotts or peices of Eight, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> did <lb xml:id="l13"/>deale for, or that they were Enter'd by this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> and further saith <lb xml:id="l14"/>that the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> did cause a Furnace to be erected in his <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l15"/>house in <placeName>Mark layn</placeName> where he togeather with one <persName>- - - - Willmore</persName> <lb xml:id="l16"/>did refine Silver, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Berth</persName> did cause to be drawn into <lb xml:id="l17"/>Wyre (as this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> beleives) which he sold to Sundry persons, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out <lb xml:id="l18"/>giveing the <choice><abbr>ꝑticulars</abbr><expan>particulars</expan></choice> to this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> And further saith that about a <lb xml:id="l19"/>week agoe the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> Furnace was demollished, but upon what Account <lb xml:id="l20"/>this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> doth not know. And saith that the Latter end of last <lb xml:id="l21"/>week M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Atwell</persName> told this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> that there was a report, about <lb xml:id="l22"/>Town that the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> had sold Severall Counterfeit peices of Eight <lb xml:id="l23"/>(the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berck</persName> being present and Said there was nothing in it) <lb xml:id="l24"/>This <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> further saith that he never heard any thing of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l25"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> report before that time, And further saith that the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> <lb xml:id="l26"/>always kept his business very private from this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> and never <lb xml:id="l27"/>acquainted his <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> with any of his Affaires he could keep from <lb xml:id="l28"/>him, And further saith, that he this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> did never know the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l29"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> before he saw him in <placeName>England</placeName>, But thath been told <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l30"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Berth</persName> was a great dealer in <placeName>France</placeName> in all sorts of Silver, <lb xml:id="l31"/>And further saith, that he the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> did Sell Severall <choice><abbr>ꝑcells</abbr><expan>parcells</expan></choice> of <lb xml:id="l32"/>peices of Eight, Barrs and Ingots of Silver and other foreign Silver <lb xml:id="l33"/>Coynes Sometimes to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Atwell</persName>, to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Caswell</persName>, and some others, And <lb xml:id="l34"/>that the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> did keep above stares an <choice><sic>An</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> accompting house <lb xml:id="l35"/>private to himselfe, in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he usually kept his Silver, and his Coynes <lb xml:id="l36"/>and usually kept the Key thereof himselfe, But he <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName> <lb xml:id="l37"/>being gone from home on <date>Sunday last</date>, Since when this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l38"/>hath not seen him, nor heard where he is, nor when he will <lb xml:id="l39"/>return: But <date>yesterday</date> in the afternoon, he this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> finding <lb xml:id="l40"/>the Key in the Door of the said Accompting house, went in but <lb xml:id="l41"/>found nothing there as usuall; he then took the said Key into his <lb xml:id="l42"/>own Custody, And further saith that he this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> had the afore<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l43"/>said Book or Books of Accounts in His Custody on <date>Satturday last</date>, <lb xml:id="l44"/>but doth not now know where they now are. this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> further <lb xml:id="l45"/>saith that the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <persName>Berth</persName>, came into the Compting house <lb xml:id="l46"/>below staires on <date>Satturday last</date>, and did take from thence the <lb xml:id="l47"/>Great book of <choice><abbr>Acco.<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Accounts</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> book he this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> hath not Seen Since.
