                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par1">The <choice><abbr>Exai<hi rend="overline">aio</hi>n</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> of <persName><hi rend="overline">Edw<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> Holt</hi></persName> of <placeName><choice><sic>Wanswood</sic><corr>Harwood</corr></choice><note type="editorial">The placename is here recordied as 'Wanswood', but from the information following it appears 'Harwood' is meant.</note></placeName> in the said County<note type="editorial">See Deposition No. 483.</note>.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Who on <choice><abbr>Exai<hi rend="overline">aio</hi>n</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> saith that <choice><abbr>ab.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3. years agoe this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> being <lb xml:id="l1"/>a prisner in <placeName>the Castle at Lancaster</placeName> for debt, <persName>Christoꝑ Emerson <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Borrows</persName> <lb xml:id="l2"/>
                    was brought thither for Fellony, with whome this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> became acquainted <lb xml:id="l3"/>dureing <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> time this Examinant, has heard him in open discourse amongst <lb xml:id="l4"/>the prisoners <choice><sic>in open discourse</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> tell of many evill practices, concerning <lb xml:id="l5"/>Clipping and counterfeiting money: But the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> being discharged out <lb xml:id="l6"/>of Goale whilst this Examinant continued prisner this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> never saw him <lb xml:id="l7"/>after untill <date>fryday in Easter week last</date>, that this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> light on him at <lb xml:id="l8"/><placeName>Loughpreston in the County of York</placeName>, but this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> was not in any house <lb xml:id="l9"/>with him there, but only Spoke to him in the Street when <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> - <lb xml:id="l10"/>where this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> lived, saying he would come and See this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> at his house <lb xml:id="l11"/>if he ever happen'd to come that way. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="5"/>And further saith that on <lb xml:id="l12"/><date>Munday the first day of this Instant May</date>, the said <persName>Emerson</persName> came to this <lb xml:id="l13"/><choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> house, at <placeName>Harwood</placeName> aforesaid, and telling this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> he was to worke at <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">his trade</fw>                   <pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/><choice><sic>at</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> his trade of a Smith with <persName>John Ryley</persName> and staying that night at this <lb xml:id="l14"/><choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> house but stay'd not: and on <date>thursday evening (the 11.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> instant</date> <supplied reason="omitted" cert="high">)</supplied>, he came <lb xml:id="l15"/>again and lay all night at this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> house, after <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> time this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l16"/>saw him no more till <date>last tursday</date>, that he came with <persName>Henry Brackon</persName> <lb xml:id="l17"/>of <placeName>Lancaster</placeName> and others to app<hi rend="superscript">re</hi>hend this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> upon a Warrant.</p>
                <p xml:id="par3">This <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> doth deny that ever he was with the said <persName>Christopꝑ Emerson</persName> <lb xml:id="l18"/>either in the house or Shop of <persName>John Ryley</persName>, nor did <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> ever propose <lb xml:id="l19"/>anything to this <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">Ex.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> concerning clipping Coyning or Counterfeiting Money, nor <lb xml:id="l20"/>never told this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> of any Ingredients mettalls or <choice><abbr>Instrum<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Instruments</expan></choice> for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> use or purpose</p>
                <p xml:id="par4">THis <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> also denyeth that he did ever send or advise <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> to goe to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>house or shopp or the said <persName>John Ryley</persName>, or ever sent any messages or token for <lb xml:id="l22"/>that purpose or to receive him, but the first time <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> Saw <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l23"/>said <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> at his house, he told this <choice><abbr>Ex.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> that he had <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> day before called of <lb xml:id="l24"/><persName>John Ryley</persName>, and was to go again the next day to work with him. <lb xml:id="l25"/><space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="55"/><hi rend="larger"><persName>Edw: Holte</persName></hi></p>
                <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par5">The <choice><abbr>Exai<hi rend="overline">aio</hi>n</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> of <persName>Tho.<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> Holt the son of the aforenamed <lb xml:id="l26"/>Edward Holt</persName> taken at the same time.</p>
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6">Who on <choice><abbr>Exai<hi rend="overline">aio</hi>n</abbr><expan>Examination</expan></choice> saith that on <date>Munday <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 1.<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> of this <choice><abbr>Ins.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Instant</expan></choice> may</date> <lb xml:id="l27"/><persName>Christoꝑ Emerson <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Burrows</persName>, came to this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> house in <placeName>Harwood</placeName> (where <lb xml:id="l28"/>this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> father <persName>Edw.</persName> also lives) and p<hi rend="superscript">re</hi>tending a former acquaintance <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> this <lb xml:id="l29"/><choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> father (who was not then within) desired a nights lodging there, which <lb xml:id="l30"/>this <choice><abbr>Ex.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> consented to, he say that he had called of <persName>John Ryley</persName> that day who is <lb xml:id="l31"/>a Smith and also <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> he was to go the next day to work with him, and <lb xml:id="l32"/>accordingly he went the next morning (as this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> beleives) to worke and <lb xml:id="l33"/>came again to this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> house to lye the second night. That on <date>Fryday <lb xml:id="l34"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 5.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></date> this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> goeing from home and not returning before <date>thursday night <lb xml:id="l35"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 11.<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Instant</date>, was told the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> was then in bed in this <choice><abbr>Ex<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Exminants</expan></choice> house, and <lb xml:id="l36"/>about 7. of the clock the next morning he came to this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> bedd<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l37"/>side, and desired this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> to lend him a Crown peice or two halde <lb xml:id="l38"/>Crowns, but this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> denying to lend him any he went away, and <lb xml:id="l39"/>this <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> never daw him after untill <date>last Tuesday</date>. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="4"/>This <choice><abbr>Exam.<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinant</expan></choice> denyeth <lb xml:id="l40"/>that ever he was in the house or shop of <persName>John Ryley</persName> with the <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Said</expan></choice> <persName>Emerson</persName> <lb xml:id="l41"/>or ever saw him use any sort of work in the fire or otherwise, nor never <lb xml:id="l42"/>heard him propose or discourse anything concerning the makeing <lb xml:id="l43"/>or counterfeiting of money, or of any Instruments for that purpose.<lb xml:id="l44"/><space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="50"/><persName>Tho: <hi rend="subscript">his <hi rend="largest">T</hi> mark</hi></persName>                                     </p>
