                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">The Deposi<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of Bodenham Rewse <choice><abbr>Gent</abbr><expan>Gentleman</expan></choice> 10 Iuly 1699</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Hee saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> at the last assizes for the County of Stafford after <lb xml:id="l1"/>the conviction of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Bate Iudge Gold sent for the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>and exam<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ined</reg></choice> him <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> the persons accused by the said Bate and after <lb xml:id="l3"/>the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> had said that upon his <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> Henry Dixon and <lb xml:id="l4"/>Timothy Roberts were in Bristoll Gaol and Thomas Boddilly a <lb xml:id="l5"/>Prisoner in Somerset<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">sh</hi></orig><reg>shire</reg></choice> was also charged by him and upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l6"/>charge might probably be continued till the next assizes <lb xml:id="l7"/>or words to that purpose the said Iudge replyed that then <lb xml:id="l8"/>he ought to be reprieved<choice><orig>—</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> saith further that

                    about 3 weeks ago he being at Stafford and there discoursing <lb xml:id="l9"/>with Bate the said Bate affirm<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> he had formerly said <lb xml:id="l10"/>about Dixon's designing to convey Dyes into and<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>er</reg></choice>mans <lb xml:id="l11"/>house in order to wear <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> him was true And the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l12"/>answering that the Warden of the Mint did not think <lb xml:id="l13"/>him fitt to be an evidence on that <choice><abbr>acco<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>account</expan></choice> the said Bate replyed <lb xml:id="l14"/>that he could not help that he spake the truth of him</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> saith further that at the same time he askt <lb xml:id="l15"/>the said Bate <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> some letters wrote by him the said <lb xml:id="l16"/>Bate to one Edward Wilcox and Bate replyed <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> if I <lb xml:id="l17"/>did write them I meant no harm or to that effe<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">c</add>t</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">Afterwards the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> was told by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Gray of <lb xml:id="l18"/>Enfield Hall in Staffordshire one of his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">tys</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Iustices <lb xml:id="l19"/>of the peace <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Bate in his first letter to Wilcox moved <lb xml:id="l20"/>the said Willcox to be an evidence and Thomas Bodilly <lb xml:id="l21"/>and that Wilcox shewing the letter to the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Gra<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add> + <lb xml:id="l22"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Foley of Stourbridge in Worcest<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi><hi rend="overline">sh</hi></orig><reg>ershire</reg></choice> they advised him <lb xml:id="l23"/>Not to answer it then Bate receiving no answer sent a <lb xml:id="l24"/>2<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> letter to the said Willcock wherein he threatned the <lb xml:id="l25"/>said Willcox with the execration God Damne him that if <lb xml:id="l26"/>he would not swear <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> Boddily he the said Bate would <lb xml:id="l27"/>swear <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> him the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Wilcox or words to that effect <lb xml:id="l28"/>and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> these lett<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</orig><reg>ers</reg></choice> and a third wrote also by Bate to Wilcox <lb xml:id="l29"/>were in my Lord Dudley's Clerks hands All this was told <lb xml:id="l30"/>the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Gray who added that if Bate <choice><sic>that if Bate</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <lb xml:id="l31"/>did swear <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> Boddily the countrey would not believe him</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> saith further that <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3 weeks ago he askt <lb xml:id="l32"/>the said Bate what was become of a pair of Dyes made for him by <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Harvey and the said Bate <lb xml:id="l33"/>answer<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that he had them not but did not discov<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>er</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l34"/>he had done with them <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="4"/> and that the said Bate <lb xml:id="l35"/>proposing that the said Wilcox could be an evidence <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l36"/><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Harvey the said Harvey being exam<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ined</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> it at <lb xml:id="l37"/>Much Wenlock the said Harvey did possitively deny <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he <lb xml:id="l38"/>knew Wilcocks and drinking a Glass of ale wisht it might be his <lb xml:id="l39"/>poison if he knew him and said he would take his oath upon <gap reason="hand" unit="chars" extent="1"/></p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> was also told by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Great above<choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l40"/>said Wilcox being exam<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ined</reg></choice> before him <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> it deny<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that he <lb xml:id="l41"/>knew the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Harvey + offer<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> to take his Oath <lb xml:id="l42"/>of it</p>
