                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">The Informa<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Snow over <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> the Starr in the <lb xml:id="l1"/>broadway at the lower end of petty France Westm<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</orig><reg>inster</reg></choice> Destiller <lb xml:id="l2"/>taken this 27<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of March anno <hi rend="overline">Dni</hi> 1699</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Who saith that <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> the 1<space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="1"/> Day of Nov<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. last he was importuned by <lb xml:id="l3"/>M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Porter <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Ioanna Chaloner's Mistriss to get the said Chaloner <lb xml:id="l4"/>bayled he the said Chaloner being then in custody of mr morris <lb xml:id="l5"/>for counterfeiting Mault Tickets as the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> was informed <lb xml:id="l6"/>and thereupon the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> went to Newgate to speak <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> mr Carter <lb xml:id="l7"/>and examin him <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> the new Bank bills and the said Carter told <lb xml:id="l8"/>him that Chaloner had been upon a Dessign of marking the paper <lb xml:id="l9"/>round the edges with wyer as is done in those bills but the <lb xml:id="l10"/>design did not go on<choice><orig>–</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> and that the said Chaloner had a piece <lb xml:id="l11"/>of steel got out of the Tower before his pardon which he had <lb xml:id="l12"/>not given an <choice><abbr>acco<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>account</expan></choice> of and that since his pardon he had melted <lb xml:id="l13"/>down milld Crownes and mixed them with other Metall <lb xml:id="l14"/>and coyned it into money by casting and that he had an Inven<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on <lb xml:id="l15"/>of making a Mould of fine sort of earth and burning it so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> it would <lb xml:id="l16"/>ring and then he could cast 40 times in a mould and that he <lb xml:id="l17"/>had coyned last Summer at his woman Kates whereupon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l18"/>went from Newgate to examin Katherine Carter <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> it and askt <lb xml:id="l19"/>her if she had been examined by the Secretary and she said yes <lb xml:id="l20"/>And the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> then asking her if she gave him an <choice><abbr>acco<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>account</expan></choice> of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>she knew <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> Coyning and she said no and he reply<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> why did you <lb xml:id="l22"/>not and she answer<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that she did not think it propper and mr <lb xml:id="l23"/>Carter had not order<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> her to discover it and he answ<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">rd</hi></orig><reg>ered</reg></choice> why will <lb xml:id="l24"/>you not do it now and she reply<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that she might do her self an <lb xml:id="l25"/><choice><sic>an</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice>injury whereupon the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> told her that what she Confessed <lb xml:id="l26"/>as a witness would not be brought <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> her and that if she would tell <lb xml:id="l27"/>it to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> he would doe her no injury and asking her further <lb xml:id="l28"/>if she knew of any press or other Coyning Tooles she answered she <lb xml:id="l29"/>wisht she had known the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> sooner for Chaloner <lb xml:id="l30"/>coyned at her house the last Summer and she provided his <lb xml:id="l31"/>Coles and his things and the Maid coming by the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> bid

rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice>  he <lb xml:id="l32"/>had engraved a plate there and the Maid knew of it as well as she <lb xml:id="l33"/>and that <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a fortnight after he brought successivly t<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">w</add>o <lb xml:id="l34"/>letters from M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Carter to the Warden of the Mint to desire the <lb xml:id="l35"/>Warden to examin him concerning some Discourses + Discoverys <lb xml:id="l36"/>he had to make and the Warden refused and reply<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that <lb xml:id="l37"/>the buisiness was not in his hands and directed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l38"/>to acquaint the Secretary of State therewith and the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l39"/>did so and the Secretary of State bid the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> tell the <lb xml:id="l40"/>Warden of the Mint that he left the buisines to him and that <lb xml:id="l41"/>he desired to speak with him which this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> did and <lb xml:id="l42"/>afterwards without direction from any body went to Ka<hi rend="overline">th</hi> <lb xml:id="l43"/>Carter and asked her that if he should propose her being <lb xml:id="l44"/>an evidence to the Warden of the Mint whether she would <lb xml:id="l45"/>be honest and tell all she knew she reply<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she would <lb xml:id="l46"/>provided it would doe her self no injury This <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l47"/>told her <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> it would not if she m<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>de a Discovery to no body <lb xml:id="l48"/>but the Warden of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> she knew for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he never used to <lb xml:id="l49"/>make use of any person's Inform<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">acon</hi></orig><reg>ation</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> him <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l50"/>made it and this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> changed the said <hi rend="overline">Kath</hi> Carter not <lb xml:id="l51"/>to tell the Warden of the Mint any thing that she had confessed <lb xml:id="l52"/>any thing to this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> and <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>anuary last he this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l53"/>went to the Warden of the Mint and told him that he <lb xml:id="l54"/>believed <hi rend="overline">Kath</hi> Cater was willing to make a Discovery of <lb xml:id="l55"/>some illegall practises relating to the Coyn or words to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l56"/>effect and askt him whether this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> might bring her <lb xml:id="l57"/>before him who answer<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> that he would consider on it <choice><sic>on it</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <lb xml:id="l58"/>in two or three dayes time whether she should come before <lb xml:id="l59"/>him or not<choice><orig>—</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> And that he hath heard <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Chaloner being <lb xml:id="l60"/>told that Price (who was executed for counterfeiting Exchec<choice><orig></orig><reg>quer</reg></choice> bills<choice><orig/><reg><supplied reason="omitted">)</supplied></reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l61"/>was very penitent at his death the said Chaloner laughed as it <lb xml:id="l62"/>were in derision of the said Price and said that it was to no purpose <lb xml:id="l63"/>for a man to repent and be penitent at his death who had lived <lb xml:id="l64"/>wickedly all his life or words to that effect</p>
