                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">The Deposi<choice><orig>ī</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of Thomas Gale of Cambridge in the County of <lb xml:id="l1"/>Cambridge Carpenter taken this 5<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of Decemb<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> 1698</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">He saith that on or about the 24<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. day of October last he <lb xml:id="l2"/><choice><abbr>r<hi rend="overline">eced</hi></abbr><expan>received</expan></choice> of William Thornton who lately kept <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Fountain <lb xml:id="l3"/>Taverne in Bury in the County of Suffold the <lb xml:id="l4"/>sum of five shillings of Counterfeit mill'd money <lb xml:id="l5"/>at the Town of Cambridge above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned in a paym<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">t</hi></orig><reg>ent</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l6"/>of 7<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of which 2 were good ones and that <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a <lb xml:id="l7"/>fortnight afterwards the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> seiz<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">'d</hi></orig><reg>'d</reg></choice> a box by a <lb xml:id="l8"/><choice><abbr>Warr<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Warrant</expan></choice> from the Mayor of Cambridge which box <lb xml:id="l9"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Thomas Sadler of Strattam in the Isle of <lb xml:id="l10"/>Ely sent by his son <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Goodgame to one <lb xml:id="l11"/><unclear reason="hand" cert="low">Long</unclear> a Poulterer in Cambridge to carry to London <lb xml:id="l12"/>to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Mann at the Sign of the Bell and Cheq<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</orig><reg>uer</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l13"/>in Crispin street near Spittle fields Markett to whom <lb xml:id="l14"/>it was directed And that the said Box being seiz'<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>d</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l15"/>at Cambridge in the custody of the said <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">Long</unclear> and <lb xml:id="l16"/>opened there were found in it 4 pair of Brass Flass <lb xml:id="l17"/>for casting, severall litle baggs of fine White pouder <lb xml:id="l18"/>supposed to be the Spaud for moulding the Flasks <lb xml:id="l19"/>and severall files: and a hammer or two and a <lb xml:id="l20"/>Bottle of Aqua fortis and a sett of steel Lett<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></orig><reg>ers</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>and Screws with Plates to hold the Flasks <lb xml:id="l22"/>and an <choice><abbr>Instrum<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Instrument</expan></choice> with a Wheel and <choice><abbr>sev<hi rend="superscript">ll</hi>.</abbr><expan>severall</expan></choice>

                    other things And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Sadler above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned being apprehended <lb xml:id="l23"/>and exam<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ined</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> the said box afirmed  that that box was William <lb xml:id="l24"/>Thorton's above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned and that in the said box was found a <lb xml:id="l25"/>Morning Gown which one mr. Iennings had before seen worn by <lb xml:id="l26"/>such a sort of a Man as M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Thorton is described to be and Sadlers <lb xml:id="l27"/>wife and son and daughter all confirmed that the said Box belong<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l28"/>to a man who went by the name of Sadler's brother which man <lb xml:id="l29"/>Sadler said was Thorton And that the said Sadler owned <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l30"/>the said box was sent from London before Sturbridge Fair by <lb xml:id="l31"/>the said W<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>. Thornton came down from London to Sadlers last <lb xml:id="l32"/>Summer and after some stay there he and Sadler went to <lb xml:id="l33"/>London togeather and after their return to Sadler's <lb xml:id="l34"/>house the said box came down from London in the <lb xml:id="l35"/>Wagon as Sadler represents and was kept by Thornton <lb xml:id="l36"/>in Sadler's house in the Chamber where Thornton lay and <lb xml:id="l37"/>that Sadler owns that Thornton staid <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 20 weeks at his <lb xml:id="l38"/>house and that one Renolds a Smith in S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Ives in the County <lb xml:id="l39"/>of Huntington is reported to have made 5 or 6 round pieces <lb xml:id="l40"/>of Iron some of the Bignes of a shilling and some of the <lb xml:id="l41"/>bigness of <formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></formula> a Crown for Sadler and Thornton who paid <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l42"/>him for them and that the <tei:choice xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><tei:abbr>Depon<tei:hi rend="superscript">t</tei:hi>.</tei:abbr><tei:expan>Deponent</tei:expan></tei:choice> hath also been told that <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l43"/>Sadler and his wife, son and Daughter have all of  <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l44"/>them put off counterfeit new milld money</p>
