                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1">The Examina<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of Edward Ivy <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan><choice><unclear cert="high">alias</unclear> <unclear cert="low">also</unclear></choice></expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ones late of <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="15"/> in London <lb xml:id="l1"/>Gent taken before me the 17<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> day of May 1698</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists and <choice><abbr>exam<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>examined</expan></choice> sayth that he has <lb xml:id="l2"/>been acquainted <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings Gent in England upwards of five years <lb xml:id="l3"/>which said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings was once Footman to the Late <choice><abbr>D</abbr><expan>Duke</expan></choice> of Monmouth <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l4"/>the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings often came to the Deponents house in London, and <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l5"/>4 years since came to his said house and walked with the Deponent in <lb xml:id="l6"/>the Garden and took out a handfull of <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> which this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> took to  <lb xml:id="l7"/>be <choice><abbr>Curr<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Current</expan></choice>. That the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings desired this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> to utter as many of <lb xml:id="l8"/>the said <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> (being <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 100) as the <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>examinent</expan></choice> could and <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>par</reg></choice>ticularly desired <lb xml:id="l9"/>to take one hundred of the said <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> looking on the <choice><abbr>s.d</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/><choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> shewn to him told the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings that he believed they were good <lb xml:id="l11"/>and so they seemed to this Deponent untill that the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings <lb xml:id="l12"/>offered to sell <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> for 12 or 14<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. a piece and desired the  <lb xml:id="l13"/><choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> then to take one hundred of them and utter them That this <lb xml:id="l14"/><choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> <choice><sic>seing</sic><corr>seeing</corr></choice> the said <choice><sic>I</sic><corr type="delText">I</corr></choice><del type="strikethrough">ennings</del> <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> told the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings that the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l15"/><choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> exceeded any that chaloner made whereupon the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <choice><sic>c</sic><corr type="delText">c</corr></choice><del type="strikethrough">haloner</del> <lb xml:id="l16"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no"><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings</add> replyed that Chaloner was a fool to him that made the said <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l17"/>who was a person that lived near Hampton Court and was near <lb xml:id="l18"/><choice><abbr>neighbo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>neighbour</expan></choice> to the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings and named his name being the son  <lb xml:id="l19"/>of a Widdow woman but the <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> forgetts the name, and said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l20"/>he and the other person joyned stocks togeather and had a <choice><abbr>Conven<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan><unclear>Convenient</unclear></expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>house for coyning and desired the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to put in a hundred pounds into <lb xml:id="l22"/>the stock and to come sharer with them, he likewise told the <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l23"/>that he used to utter <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> in the countrey in exchange for a pint of <lb xml:id="l24"/>Wine and likewise desired the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to go into the countrey with him <lb xml:id="l25"/>to utter the said <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> Sayth that the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings when this <lb xml:id="l26"/><choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> knew him was a marry<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> man and lived with his wife near <lb xml:id="l27"/>Hampton Court which said wife the <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> believes is still living that <lb xml:id="l28"/>when the said <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ennings offered the said Counterfeit <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> to this <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l29"/>to pass Elizabeth <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ones widdow was present the <choice><abbr>Exam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Examinent</expan></choice> further <lb xml:id="l30"/>deposeth that he has known Edward Brady late of S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Anne <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>par</reg></choice>ish in London <lb xml:id="l31"/>upwards of 4 years past that the said Brady made it his constant business <lb xml:id="l32"/>to utter counterfeit <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice> and counterfeit English money that <lb xml:id="l33"/>the Deponent has severall tymes seen him utter such false Coyn <lb xml:id="l34"/>and the said Brady told the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> that he had the said <lb xml:id="l35"/>Counterfeit money from one Cogswell and from a D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. that lived at <lb xml:id="l36"/>the Glass house in Lambeth and as the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> believes from <lb xml:id="l37"/>one Chaloner that this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> believes that the said Brady <lb xml:id="l38"/>has uttered to the Value of severall thousand pounds in  <lb xml:id="l39"/>Counterfeit Gold and  Silver he having practised it <lb xml:id="l40"/>for severall years past that this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> is very

                    well assured that <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Gibbons now porter at Whitehall Gate very well <lb xml:id="l41"/>knows the truth of what the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> now deposeth <add place="inline" indicator="no">(</add>as to the said Brady<supplied reason="omitted" cert="high">)</supplied> <lb xml:id="l42"/>to be true That one <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>acob a Goldsmith that lived in <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">Sho</unclear> Lane <lb xml:id="l43"/>used to buy the filings of Clipt money and Clippings from severall <lb xml:id="l44"/>clippers that one Price a Watchmaker that lived near Charing <lb xml:id="l45"/>Cross used to make the Tooles for edging Counterfeit <choice><sic>Gineas</sic><corr>Guineas</corr></choice>  <lb xml:id="l46"/>Says that the said Gibbons corresponds with a great many Clippers <lb xml:id="l47"/>and Coyners and used to receive severall summs of money from them as <lb xml:id="l48"/>contribu<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">i</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on for con<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>ving at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> and was wont to solicit for <lb xml:id="l49"/>any of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> when they were in restraint That this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> very <lb xml:id="l50"/>well knew one Samuel <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ackson in England who was a clipper &amp;  <lb xml:id="l51"/>Coyner the cause of the Deponents knowledge is that the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ackson <lb xml:id="l52"/>lodged in the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponents</expan></choice> house in London but he hears that the said <lb xml:id="l53"/><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ackson is latly come into this Kingdom togeather with George <lb xml:id="l54"/>Emerson <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>oseph Houston and other <choice><abbr>Emin<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Eminent</expan></choice> Coyners + Clippers <lb xml:id="l55"/>from England who the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> believes go by other names in this <choice><abbr>Kingd</abbr><expan>Kingdom</expan></choice>. <lb xml:id="l56"/>Saith that <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Hicks late of Litle Chelsea in England and his wife <lb xml:id="l57"/>Mary Hicks and his daughter Mary Huelt were <choice><abbr>emin<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>eminent</expan></choice> Clippers in <lb xml:id="l58"/>London having seen them often clip English shillings half Crowns <lb xml:id="l59"/>and Crowns all Milld money. Saith that he very well knows <lb xml:id="l60"/>one Chaloner who lived near Charing Cross and used to coyn  <lb xml:id="l61"/>Gold pistoles and Guineas and this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> likewise knoweth one <lb xml:id="l62"/>William Deane <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> belongs to the Royall Oak Lottery in London to <lb xml:id="l63"/>have been a clipper and coyner, he likewise knoweth Thomas Deane <lb xml:id="l64"/>of London to be a Clipper. And further deposeth that he the said  <lb xml:id="l65"/>Brady is a Highwayman and that Gibbons used to furnish him <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l66"/>horses to go abroad to robb</p>
