                <p rend="indent5" xml:id="par3">In Obedience to your Lrodships Order of Reference of the 5<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> <lb xml:id="l1"/>Instant upon the Peti<choice><orig>ī</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Penman Assay Master to the <lb xml:id="l2"/>Mint at Edenborough, We have considered the same and upon En<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l3"/>quiring into the matter therein contained We <choice><sic>beleive</sic><corr>believe</corr></choice> that the <lb xml:id="l4"/>Busines of the Assay master during the late Recoinage of the moneys <lb xml:id="l5"/>in Scotland was very laborious by reason that every Iourney of new <lb xml:id="l6"/>Money was severally Assayed according to the Custom of that Mint, &amp; <lb xml:id="l7"/>that the performance thereof required a Clerk and Assistant to the <lb xml:id="l8"/>Assay master, for the maintenance of whom during that Recoinage <lb xml:id="l9"/>which lasted a year and six months, We are humbly of opinion that <lb xml:id="l10"/>there may be allowed to the peti<choice><orig>ī</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oner for Himself &amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Borthwicke a <lb xml:id="l11"/>summe after the Rate of Forty pounds <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>Ann.</abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> in all sixty pounds <lb xml:id="l12"/>to be divided between them in proportion to the time they severally <lb xml:id="l13"/>acted as Assaymasters during that service, there being the like <lb xml:id="l14"/>Allowance made to some other new Clerks of that Mint.</p>
