                <p xml:id="par3">In Obedience to Your Lordships Order of Reference of August 8: &amp; 10 wherein Wee <lb xml:id="l1"/>are directed to Consider the Qualifications of Coll: Parsons, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Croker, M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rose and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l2"/>Fowler to succeed M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Harris in the place of Graver of the Mint. Wee humbly lay before <lb xml:id="l3"/>Your Lordship that the Master of the Mint considering what Inconveniency the Mint <lb xml:id="l4"/>lately suffered and may against Suffer by taking in Cutters of Seales into the Cheif Gravers <lb xml:id="l5"/>place, did upon his succeeding M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Neale put a clause into the Indenture then made <lb xml:id="l6"/>between the Crowne and himself, whereby the Gravers sallary of 325<hi rend="superscript">£</hi>. <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>An<hi rend="overline">n</hi>.</abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> upon the <lb xml:id="l7"/>next voidance of the place should cease in order to a new Establishment, for the Roettiers <lb xml:id="l8"/>brought up no new Gravers under them, and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Harris who succeeded them being a cutter <lb xml:id="l9"/>of Seales and not skilld in that sort of Graving which is proper for the Money Imployed <lb xml:id="l10"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Croker to do all that worke with an allowance of 175<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>A<hi rend="overline">nn</hi></abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> and retained to <lb xml:id="l11"/>Himself the remaining 150<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>An<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Croker was not bred up in the service of the <lb xml:id="l12"/>Mint, but now by long practice He works very well And we are humbly of opinion that <lb xml:id="l13"/>He is the fittest person to be made first Graver of the Mint.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">It is humbly proposed therefore the advantage and security of the Coyne <lb xml:id="l14"/>against Coutnerfeiting that there should be a sett of Gravers constantly brought up in <lb xml:id="l15"/>the Mint who having once attained to perfection may keep their Art among themselves <lb xml:id="l16"/>and propagate it to probationers or Apprentices and be succeeded by them. For which end <lb xml:id="l17"/>wee humbly propose that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Croker be now made the first Graver of the Mint with a <lb xml:id="l18"/>sallary of £200 <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>An<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> for maintaining himself and a servant to file &amp; polish the <lb xml:id="l19"/>Dyes and turn the press and be allowed that part of the Gravers House in which He <lb xml:id="l20"/>now lives. And M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Samuel Bull who is now a Probationer and has a sallary of 60<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> <lb xml:id="l21"/><choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>Ann</abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> be made second Graver of the Mint with a sallary of 80<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>A<hi rend="overline">nn</hi>.</abbr><expan>Annum</expan></choice> iif Your <choice><abbr>Lor<hi rend="overline">dsp</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l22"/>shall approve thereof and be allowed the other part of the Gravers House and that two <lb xml:id="l23"/>Rooms over the great press Roome and over M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Crokers shop be reserved for a Third <lb xml:id="l24"/>Graver to Lodge and Worke in And that the Gravers be obliged by a Clause in their <lb xml:id="l25"/>Constitution to make such Draughts Embossments Puncheons and Dyes as the Master <lb xml:id="l26"/>and Worker shall Direct for dispatching the Coynage according to the ancient <lb xml:id="l27"/>Constitution of the Mint Coll: Parsons and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Fowler do not Grave themselves butt <lb xml:id="l28"/>Employ others and for that Reason are less fitt for the service of the Mint M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Le Clerc is <lb xml:id="l29"/>a quick and skillfull Graver butt we humbly desire more time to Consider of filling <lb xml:id="l30"/>the third Gravers place</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">Besides the Place of Graver to the Mint M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Harris was also Graver of Seales to <lb xml:id="l31"/>Her Majesty <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>:</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is no part of the Constitution of the Mint and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Ross desires to <lb xml:id="l32"/>succeed M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Harris only in this place and by a Seale which He has Graved for the Dutchy <lb xml:id="l33"/>of Lancaster He seems Qualifyed for it</p>
