                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">May it Please Your Lordships</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">Pursuant to your Lordships Order of Reference of the 16 December We have Examined <lb xml:id="l1"/>the Peti<choice><orig>ī</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on and Bill of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Tho<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>.Birdikin Deputy Warden of His <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Mint at <choice><abbr>Ex<hi rend="overline">on</hi></abbr><expan>Exeter</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>is hereunto annexed and as to the first Article of the Bill wherein He prays the allowance of <lb xml:id="l3"/>22: 10. for lodging two years and a Quarter we humbly represent that the Officers of the Country <lb xml:id="l4"/>Mints were allowed Lodgings in the Mints so far as there was Room for them but where there <lb xml:id="l5"/>wanted Room the Officers provided Lodgings for themselves in other places without being <lb xml:id="l6"/>hitherto allowed any thing by the King for the same.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">The second Article where he prays allowance of 30<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> for the Quarters salary from <lb xml:id="l7"/>Midsummer to <choice><abbr>Michmas</abbr><expan>Michaelmas</expan></choice> 1698. we humbly conceive to be reasonable because He and the <lb xml:id="l8"/>Kings Clerk after the other Officers were dismissed staid at Exeter with the Deputy Master <lb xml:id="l9"/>to assist him in Coining some Moneys after Midsummer &amp; to take care of makeing up some <lb xml:id="l10"/>of the Kings Sweep of the first melting &amp; principally to Quiet the Importers some of which <lb xml:id="l11"/>were not paid off till Michaelmass.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">As to the third Article where he prays 46<hi rend="superscript">£</hi> allowance for his pains in attending <lb xml:id="l12"/>above 131 days in the melting house above 20 hours each melting &amp; for his Expences in <lb xml:id="l13"/>Encouraging the Workmen &amp; Charges in Letters about the Mint Business: We find that <lb xml:id="l14"/>when the Melter of that Mint demanded an allowance for the Wast in the first melting <lb xml:id="l15"/>of the Hammered Money which the <choice><abbr>Petic<hi rend="overline">on</hi>er</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> <choice><sic>beleived</sic><corr>believed</corr></choice> too much, the <choice><abbr>Petic<hi rend="overline">on</hi>er</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> undertook <lb xml:id="l16"/>to oversee the melting of about 11400<hi rend="superscript">lwt</hi><choice><orig>..</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> of silver and took the sweep into his owne <lb xml:id="l17"/>Custody for the King &amp; took care to see it made up giving a Constant attendance that <lb xml:id="l18"/>Tricks might not be playd to Increase the Waste of the Meltings or diminish the <lb xml:id="l19"/>Profitt of the Sweep. And this Attendance he gave at the Meltings twice a weeke &amp; some <lb xml:id="l20"/>times thrice a Weeke about 20 hours a day for above a year And by this his Care and <lb xml:id="l21"/>Diligence he saved 220£ to the King out of the allowance <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>:</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> would otherwise have <lb xml:id="l22"/>been made to the melter for the same. For this service therefore considering it was above <lb xml:id="l23"/>his Duty &amp; for his charge in Encouraging the Workmen during this service &amp; for the Charge <lb xml:id="l24"/>of Letters during the whole Business of that Mint, We humbly Conceive this Article of <lb xml:id="l25"/>the Peti<choice><orig>ī</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on to be reasonable.</p>
