    <p rend="center" xml:id="par2"><hi rend="large">The humble Petition of Gerard Bovey</hi></p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3"><hi rend="larger">Humbly Sheweth</hi></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4"><hi rend="large">That</hi> Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> is, and for above twenty years past hath been a Freeman of London &amp; of the <lb xml:id="l1"/>Company of Founders &amp; a Liveryman thereof And for the making what honest Improvement <lb xml:id="l2"/>he could of his Trade of Buttonmaking (which he followed) for his own benefit, did spend some <lb xml:id="l3"/>considerable time, and make &amp; tryed severall <choice><abbr>Experim<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>:</abbr><expan>Experiments</expan></choice> in projecting some Engine for making Metall <lb xml:id="l4"/>Buttons of Block Tin better &amp; more curious man any before known in these parts, but could not <lb xml:id="l5"/>arrive to a perfection therein without travelling beyond seas. And thereupon in the year 1695 <lb xml:id="l6"/>did travell to Nuremberg in Germany, and there with some Assistance did contrive, and after a <lb xml:id="l7"/>considerable Expence of nine months time; &amp; much money &amp; hazard, did from thence being over <lb xml:id="l8"/>to England an usefull Engine for that purpose, being a small Hand Engine going with a single <lb xml:id="l9"/>Screw, never before or since used in England by any other: Which You <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> hath all along from <lb xml:id="l10"/>that time used for Buttom making to his great Encouragement &amp; the Support of himself &amp; Family <lb xml:id="l11"/>Vntill the publishing of two Acts of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> made in the 7<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. &amp; 8<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. and 8<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> &amp; 9<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> years of his now <lb xml:id="l12"/><choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> reign; Which oblige all persons to bring into the Mint all manner of Presses, Engines &amp;c. therein <lb xml:id="l13"/>named that might be used or be deemed to be used for Coinage under very great Penalties Of which Your <lb xml:id="l14"/><choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> had no sooner Notice, but he voluntarily carried the same into the Mint: Not for that it was usefull <lb xml:id="l15"/>for Coinage, but for avoiding all occasion of Offence &amp; danger, and lest it might be deemed to be what <lb xml:id="l16"/>Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> was no way apprehensive of, and also in Obedience to the said Statutes: And the same being <lb xml:id="l17"/>viewed by the Officers of the Mint (who found it uncapable of being used for Coinage) was delivered back <lb xml:id="l18"/>to Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> with Liberty to Work therewith, upon Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> giving Security to deliver the same again <lb xml:id="l19"/>into the Mint when required: And Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> did continue to Work the same in his honest way of <lb xml:id="l20"/>Button making; Vntill the same was Remanded &amp; is again delivered into the Mint; Which Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>humbly Conceives was upon Occasion of a Petition of one Daniel Critchlow presented to Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> for <lb xml:id="l22"/>the use of some such like Engine to make Buttons with, wherein he mentions that of Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice>. <lb xml:id="l23"/>Although the said Critchlow never Invented nor procured such Press or Engine; Neither was he a <lb xml:id="l24"/>Buttonmaker but a Wy<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">re</add>worker. And Your <choice><abbr>L<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>rd<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> hath reason to <choice><sic>beleive</sic><corr>believe</corr></choice> that what he designed <lb xml:id="l25"/>thereby was meerly to have the opportunity of making another Press by Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> For that Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> never <lb xml:id="l26"/>heard of any such Engine or Press that had been examined by the Officers of the Mint <add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>save only his Your <lb xml:id="l27"/><choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> &amp; one of the Invention of Iacob Wallis for making fine Hooks &amp; Chains for Watches<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add> that were ever <lb xml:id="l28"/>restored and delivered out ag<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ain</add>. By which means Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> is now wholly deprived of his business <lb xml:id="l29"/>which was the only Support of himself and Family.</p>
    
    <p rend="indent5" xml:id="par5"><hi rend="large">Now may it please</hi> Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> That forasmuch as Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> said Press or Engine was <lb xml:id="l30"/>projected and used by Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> before either of the said Acts of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> were in being: And for <lb xml:id="l31"/>that the same was Projected &amp; obtained by Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice> &amp; by no other, And therefore (as he humbly <lb xml:id="l32"/>Conceives) most justly Intitled to the sole Vse and benefit thereof; which no other person can pretend <lb xml:id="l33"/>to: And therefore humbly hopes he may not suffer in so honest &amp; profitable an Invention, by deeming <lb xml:id="l34"/>it a President for Evill designing men. And for as much also as the said Press or Engine hath been <lb xml:id="l35"/>found incapable of Coinage by the Mint Officers</p>
    
    <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par6"><hi rend="large">Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioner</expan></choice></hi> humbly prayeth Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> to be pleased to Order his said Press or Engine <lb xml:id="l36"/>to be restored to him: And that upon Your <choice><abbr>Pet<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.</abbr><expan>Petitioners</expan></choice> giving such Security as Your Lordships <lb xml:id="l37"/>shall require, Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> will be pleased to Authorize or permit him (in such sort as <lb xml:id="l38"/>Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> shall think fitt) to Work the same according to the Power &amp; Authority given <lb xml:id="l39"/>to Your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">pps</hi>:</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> by the said Acts of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice>.
