    <p xml:id="par3"><del type="strikethrough">Vpon A dispute <unclear reason="del" cert="low">here</unclear></del></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">In the Indenture made between his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> &amp; the Master &amp; Worker of <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> his Mint 
        <lb xml:id="l1"/><del type="strikethrough">under the bread seal there in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is the Law of the Mint</del> there is a clause <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> in these 
        <lb xml:id="l2"/>words. 'And his said Majesty doth grant &amp; confirm 'by these presents that the Officers 
        <lb xml:id="l3"/>of the Mint shall at all times have hold &amp; peaceably enjoy all places houses &amp; 
        <lb xml:id="l4"/>grownds as well builded as unbuilded within the said Mint which heretofore 
        <lb xml:id="l5"/>have been called reputed or taken for the Mint without the medling let or 
        <lb xml:id="l6"/>disturbance by the <del type="strikethrough">Constable</del> Chief Governour Constable Lieu<choice><orig><add place="inline" indicator="no">e</add></orig><reg/></choice>tenant or any other 
        <lb xml:id="l7"/>Officer or Minister of the Tower. This <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> grant is of above 160 years standing 
        <lb xml:id="l8"/>as I 
        <del type="strikethrough"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">W</add>hen the coinage by the Mill &amp; Press was <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">first</del></add> set <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">up</add>, <add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or about</add> in the year <lb xml:id="l9"/>1665,<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add> there was an order of Council for removing all strangers out of the Mint</del>
        find by copies of old Indentures. And no mention being made <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">therein</add> of any Officer of the 
        <lb xml:id="l10"/>Ordnance, it seems to have <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>een made before that Office was erected.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par5">About the year 1577 a Smiths shop in the Mint was put into repairs by 
            <lb xml:id="l11"/>the Office of Ordnance &amp; has <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">fre</unclear></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">since being</add> frequently <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">been</unclear></del> repaired by them<add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> 
            <del type="strikethrough">&amp; was rebuilt</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><sic>And</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add>
            <lb xml:id="l12"/><del type="strikethrough">by them one &amp; twnety years ago <unclear reason="del">this</unclear> Smith</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">And the same smith has usually been Smith of the Mint also &amp;</add> had a fourge at the end of the Mill rooms 
            <lb xml:id="l13"/>for making <del type="cancelled">the</del> dyes &amp; puncheons <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add>or the Mint.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par6">When the coinage was set on foot by the mill &amp; press <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was in the year 1665</add>, there was an 
            <lb xml:id="l14"/>order of Council for removing all strangers out of the Mint: but the Smith 
            <lb xml:id="l15"/>was not removed; whether because he was Smith to both Offices or for any other 
            <lb xml:id="l16"/>reason I do not know.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par7">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Slingsby about 
            <del type="strikethrough">a little before his place <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> &amp; W<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></del></add> was sequestred, <del type="cancelled">under</del> (that is, about <lb xml:id="l17"/>the year <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">16<unclear reason="del">7</unclear>5 or</del></add> 16<unclear reason="del" cert="low">8</unclear>0</del><choice><sic>)</sic><corr type="delText">)</corr></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">about 80 years ago</add>
             endeavoured to re<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>ove this Smith of the Office of Ordnance 
            <lb xml:id="l18"/>out of the Mint 
            <add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="yes"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> a Committee of Council came to the <del type="strikethrough">Mint to</del> Tower to view whether another place <del type="strikethrough">might be</del> <lb xml:id="l19"/>in the Tower might be found for the said Smith</add> &amp; about that time the further end of the Mint was put into the 
            <lb xml:id="l20"/>hands of the <del type="cancelled">Off</del> Office of Ordnance <del type="cancelled">&amp; <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> &amp; a new Gate built for bounding the Mint 
            <lb xml:id="l21"/>at that end &amp; there has been a tradition in the Mint that <del type="strikethrough">that end of the Mint <lb xml:id="l22"/><unclear reason="del" cert="low">was</unclear></del> the Office of Ordnance was <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">on that account</add>  to have quitted the <del type="strikethrough">Mint</del> smiths s<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">hop</add> <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/>p<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/>t</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l23"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">the</add> fourge over against it. But <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">byt <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="2"/> was made I cannot affirm</del> <add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no"><choice><sic>but what a great</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add></add> the writings relating to that matter <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">bein</add>g carried away <lb xml:id="l24"/>by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hoars Executri<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">x</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del></p>
            
            <p xml:id="par8">In the year 1699 the Surveyor of the Ordnan<del type="over">t</del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>e to rebuilt the Smiths Shop, &amp; I <lb xml:id="l25"/>opposed it &amp; he represented that the further end of the Mint was not <del type="strikethrough">sufficient</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/></del> <add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">sufficie<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>t</add></add> for the business of the<add place="inline" indicator="no">ir</add> Smith. And the Board of the Ordnance <del type="strikethrough">g<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> sent t<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">o</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">e</add> letter to <lb xml:id="l26"/>the <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">ds</hi></abbr><expan>Lords</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> of the Treasury who thereupon quashed the dispute without <lb xml:id="l27"/>acquainting me <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> that Letter, or <del type="strikethrough">reading the clause in the Indenture of the <lb xml:id="l28"/>Mint.</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">inquiring further into it.</add></p>
            
<p xml:id="par9">On the 23<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> Febr. last I received <del type="strikethrough">a Letter</del> from the board of Ordnance <lb xml:id="l29"/>a <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">l</add>etter <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">directed to the principal Officers of the Mint</add> a copy of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is hereunto anne<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">x</add>ed. But we having no board to return <lb xml:id="l30"/>an answer to it I <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/></del> waited upon</add> Generall Wills <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; told h<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">im</add></add> that <del type="strikethrough">we had</del> no<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> authority to treat with <lb xml:id="l31"/>them about the<del type="strikethrough">se matters.</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">contents th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ere</add>of.</add> <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/> having notice <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">afterward</del></add> that they would give me a meeting</del>
    <lb xml:id="l32"/>They have since built a new house in the Mint for their Clerks &amp; are turning the <lb xml:id="l33"/>Smiths shop into another house for Clerks, &amp; would have me agree with them about <lb xml:id="l34"/>a parti<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>ion wall between that house &amp; one of ours: but I have no authority to meddle with <lb xml:id="l35"/>it.</p>

<p xml:id="par10"><del type="strikethrough">They Ob<unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del></p>

<p xml:id="par11">The gates at both ends of the Mint <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">be</add>ing in the custody <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">of</add> the Porter of the <lb xml:id="l36"/>Mint, the Officers of the Ordnance can have no <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">less</unclear></del></add> right to bring in Carts with bricks &amp; <lb xml:id="l37"/>Timber for building between <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>he gates <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">,</unclear> <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></del> without leave.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par12">It is represented that the Officers of the Mint let their houses to forreigners<del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="strikethrough">But</del> 
        <lb xml:id="l38"/>&amp; why may not the Clerks of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Ordnan<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>e as well as <del type="strikethrough">other</del> <del type="strikethrough">people</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">strangers</add> live in the Mint. <lb xml:id="l39"/>But <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> disorders ought <del type="strikethrough">not</del> to be remedied &amp; not drawn into president &amp; made incurable. <lb xml:id="l40"/>The Mint is under the government of a board, &amp; at present we have no board, but this <lb xml:id="l41"/>disorder is not to be drawn into president.</p>
