Warden of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l1"/>Mint <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Tower of London.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2">Thomas Fowle one of the Clerkes of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Mint <lb xml:id="l2"/>humbly presents to your <choice><abbr>wo<hi rend="overline">rp</hi></abbr><expan>worship</expan></choice> as follows</p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">That since his coming to the Mint <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 20<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. <lb xml:id="l3"/>of Iuly. 1672. <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Anthony S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Leger then Warden of the <lb xml:id="l4"/>Mint came very seldom to the place and did not any<lb xml:id="l5"/>thin of service more then to come and Ask how <lb xml:id="l6"/>the Affaires of the Mint were and that was all &amp; soe went his way.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">After him one <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Thomas Wharton Knight <lb xml:id="l7"/>of the Bath and his sonn phillip men of plentifull <lb xml:id="l8"/>fortunes joyntly was Warden, who sometimes came <lb xml:id="l9"/>to the Mint and asked a few Questions relating <lb xml:id="l10"/>there unto and did some Business and to little or <lb xml:id="l11"/>no more purpose then the former</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par5">Succeeded them did one <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> phillip Floyd a very <lb xml:id="l12"/>Ingenious Gentleman a Civilian by proffession, one <lb xml:id="l13"/>of the Clerks of the Councill and one of the secretarys <lb xml:id="l14"/>to the then Earle of Danby Lord high Treasurer <lb xml:id="l15"/>of England, who as Warden<choice><sic>)</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> Assisted the Officers <lb xml:id="l16"/>of the Mint in <choice><abbr>sev<hi rend="superscript">ll</hi>:</abbr><expan>severall</expan></choice> Affaires proper for the <lb xml:id="l17"/>Wardens to the Lords of the Treasury who succeeded <lb xml:id="l18"/>the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Earle of Danby and continued soe for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l19"/>space of a twelve month &amp; then dyed.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par6">Next to him came one Doctor Owen Wynn</p>
    
        <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">a learned</fw><pb xml:id="p021v" n="21v"/>
    
    <p xml:id="par7">A learned Civilian and <choice><sic>Cheife</sic><corr>Chiefe</corr></choice> Secretary to the <lb xml:id="l20"/>Earle of Sunderland whose Attendance was frequently <lb xml:id="l21"/>and Diligent and very servicable in his station <lb xml:id="l22"/>&amp; not long after his present <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Accession to <lb xml:id="l23"/>the Crown relinquished his <choice><abbr>Employm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Employment</expan></choice>.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par8">His successor was one Benja<hi rend="superscript"><unclear reason="hand">e</unclear></hi> Overton Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <lb xml:id="l24"/>who came from beyond sea <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi>:</abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> as was <lb xml:id="l25"/>reported, who came sometimes to the Mint &amp; <lb xml:id="l26"/>did some business now and then in a Transitory <lb xml:id="l27"/>Manner and then went his way, who having <lb xml:id="l28"/>his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> favour was made a Comissioner of the <lb xml:id="l29"/>Customes and too left his Wardens place here.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par9">And now at present yourself in the Office <lb xml:id="l30"/>of Warden, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> if I may be so<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">d</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> bold to say <lb xml:id="l31"/>and <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> submission I question not but wee <lb xml:id="l32"/>shall find you fair to Exceed the rest for <lb xml:id="l33"/>the good &amp; priviledges of the Mint <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">more</add> then all <lb xml:id="l34"/>your predecessors.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par10">It is further humbly shewn unto you <lb xml:id="l35"/>that in the time of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Anthony S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> leger (the <lb xml:id="l36"/>first Warden of the Mint since my being here) <lb xml:id="l37"/>made his Sonn Anthony S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Leger Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. who was <lb xml:id="l38"/>Ensigne to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> In<hi rend="superscript">o</hi> Robinson his Deputy and <lb xml:id="l39"/>there being some who did worker or belong <lb xml:id="l40"/>to the Mint Emprisoned for Debt and that <lb xml:id="l41"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> power of <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> In<hi rend="superscript">o</hi>: Robinson Application

        was made to this Ensigne S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. leger and Deputy to the <lb xml:id="l42"/>then Warden his father<choice><sic>)</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> for preserving the priviledges <lb xml:id="l43"/>of the Mint<choice><sic><add place="inline" indicator="no">)</add></sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <del type="cancelled">and</del> to sett him at liberty; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Ensigne <lb xml:id="l44"/>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Ledger and Deputy Warden went to S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. In<hi rend="superscript">o</hi> Robin<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l45"/>son his <choice><abbr>Cap<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Captain</expan></choice> and <choice><sic>Leuitenant</sic><corr>Lieutenant</corr></choice> of the Tower and demanded <lb xml:id="l46"/>the prisoners Liberty, who reused to grant it where<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l47"/>upon the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Leger told <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> In<hi rend="superscript">o</hi>. Robinson that he <lb xml:id="l48"/>had nothing to doe <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> any thing that belonged to the <lb xml:id="l49"/>Mint of that nature and would have him out whether <lb xml:id="l50"/>he would or no and soe by Virtue of his power as <lb xml:id="l51"/>Deputy Warden and priviledges of the Mint sett him at <lb xml:id="l52"/>liberty</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par11">From whom <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said Fowle had this particularly <lb xml:id="l53"/>it being soe long since<choice><sic>)</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> has forgot. but is sure he had <lb xml:id="l54"/>it from such a hand that Credit may be given to <lb xml:id="l55"/>it</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par12"><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Hoare Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. late <choice><abbr>Compt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>:</abbr><expan>Comptroller</expan></choice> of the Mint <lb xml:id="l56"/><unclear><choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">deced</hi>.</abbr><expan>deceased</expan></choice></unclear> was a very Indi<unclear reason="hand">r</unclear>ious man, and <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">tho</hi></abbr><expan>though</expan></choice> but of <lb xml:id="l57"/>few wordes would appeare very much for the <lb xml:id="l58"/>priviledges of the Mint, being sometimes free in <lb xml:id="l59"/>discourse <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Fowle <choice><sic>(</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice>would often be talking <lb xml:id="l60"/>to him concerning the priviledges of the Mint &amp; upon <lb xml:id="l61"/>an Occasion told the said Fowle what papers between <lb xml:id="l62"/>King Charles the second and <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> In<hi rend="superscript">o</hi>: Robinson <lb xml:id="l63"/>saying <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn you have nothing to doe <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the

        Mint altho it be <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in the Tower between the <lb xml:id="l64"/>beating of the Travally in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Morning &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Taptoo <lb xml:id="l65"/>at Night, which said Relation the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Fowle <lb xml:id="l66"/>had from the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Compt<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>:</abbr><expan>Comptrollers</expan></choice> own mouth or nere <lb xml:id="l67"/>to this Effect.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par13">Henry Slingsby Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">deced</hi></abbr><expan>deceased</expan></choice> late <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Master</expan></choice> and Worker <lb xml:id="l68"/>of the said Mint a man of great parts &amp; understand<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l69"/>ing would not admitt the priviledges of the Mint <lb xml:id="l70"/>in the least to be infringed or Warders to come <lb xml:id="l71"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice>Mint by Virtue of their places to doe as they <lb xml:id="l72"/>doe  now but would &amp; did in a civil way permit <lb xml:id="l73"/>them to come sometimes but not otherwise <lb xml:id="l74"/>as aforesaid</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par14"><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Thomas Wharton (<choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Anthony S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. leger's <lb xml:id="l75"/>successor) upon application made to him by a <choice><abbr>Credit<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Creditor</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l76"/>of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Dallows for that purpose gave leave to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l77"/><choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi>.</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Creditor to Arrest him <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out ever asking or <lb xml:id="l78"/>taking to his advise therein any of the Officers of <lb xml:id="l79"/>the Mint, which he ought to have done according <lb xml:id="l80"/>to the Constitution and Customes of the same, who <lb xml:id="l81"/>lay in prison <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in the Tower by the space of three <lb xml:id="l82"/>weekes. this the <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Wharton did by Virtue of his <lb xml:id="l83"/>power as Warden, which by the then Officers <lb xml:id="l84"/>of the Mint (espe<choice><orig>t</orig><reg>c</reg></choice>ially by the <choice><abbr>Compt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Comptroller</expan></choice>) was

        lookt upon as a rash and Inconsiderate Act of his <lb xml:id="l85"/>lenging much to the Weakning the priviledges of <lb xml:id="l86"/>the Mint</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par15">The said Fowle coming late one Night to the Tower <lb xml:id="l87"/>having been upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Compt<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Comptrollers</expan></choice> business<choice><sic>)</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> was Arrested and <lb xml:id="l88"/>carried to the poulty counter, and being unwilling <lb xml:id="l89"/>it should be known lay there that and the Night <lb xml:id="l90"/>following and acquainted the <choice><abbr>Compt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Comptroller</expan></choice> there<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l91"/>who thereupon sent for the party afore<choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> and <lb xml:id="l92"/>asked him how he durst venture to arrest me <lb xml:id="l93"/>that was soe much Concern'd in the Mint <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>out <lb xml:id="l94"/>first asking the Officers of the Mint leave, what <lb xml:id="l95"/>other wordes passed between them the said Fowle <lb xml:id="l96"/>knoweth not, but soe much he had from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l97"/>parties own mouth, and further Found by <lb xml:id="l98"/>his own relation that if he brought me not <lb xml:id="l99"/>presently to the <choice><abbr>Compt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Comptroller</expan></choice> he should stay and <lb xml:id="l100"/>beare me Company, whereupon the afore<choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sd</hi></abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l101"/>part was mighty earnest to gett me out <lb xml:id="l102"/>and if I mistake not came along <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> me to <lb xml:id="l103"/>the Comptroller whereupon all things were <lb xml:id="l104"/>presently after settled</p>
