<p>He was ordered by the Treasury to prepare himself for the journey on 4 August 1716 and accordingly gave up his medical practice, but was not given orders to sail [from Germany] until 5 September. Further delays were occasioned by a storm during the voyage, by lack of funds (despite a letter to London on the subject, which went unanswered) and by the discovery that the mine had been sealed up, meaning that workmen had to be taken on to open it. Details of his various expenses. Brandshagen was forced to borrow £66 to keep the expedition going. Finally he was 'hindered to deliver my businesse [ie. his report on the mine, <ref target="/catalogue/record/MINT00788">MINT00788</ref> (Mint 19/3/221-6)] to Your Lordships till the 29<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of Aprill' [he does not say by what].</p>

    <p xml:id="par3">That it was the 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of August <lb xml:id="l1"/>when my Lord Tonshend ordered me to keep <lb xml:id="l2"/>myself every day ready to go to Scotland to inspect <lb xml:id="l3"/><choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Areskin's Silver Mines, which I did accor<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l4"/>dingly, and less of my practice of Physick and other <lb xml:id="l5"/>Affairs.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">It was then allowed me 60 pounds for <lb xml:id="l6"/>my <choice><sic>yourney</sic><corr>journey</corr></choice> charges and for buying such things <lb xml:id="l7"/>and Materials as I should be in want of for <lb xml:id="l8"/>trying and examining the Mine and <choice><sic>Oar</sic><corr>Ore</corr></choice>, as far <lb xml:id="l9"/>as I could then judge. But I got not the <lb xml:id="l10"/>money out of the <choice><sic>Exequer</sic><corr>Exchequer</corr></choice> till the 31<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of Augus<supplied reason="copy">t</supplied> <lb xml:id="l11"/>and my Instruction not till the 5<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. of September, <lb xml:id="l12"/>and then I could not get a Ship for Scotland <lb xml:id="l13"/>to carry over my things and myself till the <lb xml:id="l14"/>10<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. of <choice><sic>Semptember</sic><corr>September</corr></choice>, when I <choice><sic>sealed</sic><corr>sailed</corr></choice> with these <lb xml:id="l15"/>things I had bought, from S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Catharines, and <lb xml:id="l16"/>was 3 Weeks and two days in a dangerous <lb xml:id="l17"/>Voyage, and in two Rooms we last two Masts <lb xml:id="l18"/>and were price driven upon the Sand <supplied reason="damage">B</supplied>ancks.

    when the Ship was repairing all the <choice><sic>Passenger<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l19"/>gers</sic><corr>Passengers</corr></choice> went on Shore, which was very chargeable <lb xml:id="l20"/>to me,</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par5">The things I  bought here for the purpose <lb xml:id="l21"/>of the Mines came to 45 <choice><abbr>℔:</abbr><expan>pounds</expan></choice> 7 shillings, and <lb xml:id="l22"/>the 60<choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">li</hi>:</abbr><expan> pounds</expan></choice> I received here were spent before. <lb xml:id="l23"/>I came to Edinburgh, and by that means had <lb xml:id="l24"/>not the Allownace what my Workmen or <lb xml:id="l25"/>Assistants had, whom was allowed 30 <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">li</hi>:</abbr><expan>pounds</expan></choice> each <lb xml:id="l26"/>for their hourney without any other charges at <lb xml:id="l27"/>all.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par6">The 13<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of October I came to Edinburgh <lb xml:id="l28"/>and had a Conference with the Right Ho<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">on</add>urable <lb xml:id="l29"/>the Earl of Lauderdale as also with M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Haldone <lb xml:id="l30"/>of Gleneagles and with M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Drummond as Com<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l31"/>missioners with him. I found in this Conferen<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l32"/>ce, that no Provision was made, neither for <lb xml:id="l33"/>myself, nor the two Hamiltons, nor for any incident charges.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par7">My Lord Lauderdale and the other Commissioners <lb xml:id="l34"/>as well as myself had that time advice from London <lb xml:id="l35"/>that <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Areskin had obtained his Remission <lb xml:id="l36"/>upon the fundament, that he should shew me his

        Mine himself, and it was then agreed amongst <lb xml:id="l37"/>us, not to go the Mine before his arrival <lb xml:id="l38"/>which was shortly after, and he was then every <lb xml:id="l39"/>Minute ready to shew me his mine, but for want <lb xml:id="l40"/>of Money neither myself nor the Hamiltons could <lb xml:id="l41"/>then go, I wrote to London about it it, but got <lb xml:id="l42"/>no answer. This delay was a great mortifica<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l43"/>tion to me, therefore. I look'd about to get <lb xml:id="l44"/>Money, and was so happy as to borrow 66 <choice><abbr>℔</abbr><expan>pounds</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l45"/><choice><abbr>sterl.</abbr><expan>sterling</expan></choice> with which I went presently with the other <lb xml:id="l46"/>Commissioners to the Mines, where <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Areskin <lb xml:id="l47"/>shewed us his Mine, and <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Hamilton (as the <lb xml:id="l48"/>Informer thereof) confirmed it was the same Mine <lb xml:id="l49"/>he brought the Oar of to London and made <lb xml:id="l50"/>an Affidavit of it.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par8">But we found this Mine block'd up <lb xml:id="l51"/>with Stones, <choice><sic>Rubish</sic><corr>Rubbish</corr></choice> and other things, so that <lb xml:id="l52"/>not the least Corner was to be found, which <lb xml:id="l53"/>was not filled up therewith.
