                <p rend="indent15" xml:id="par3"><hi rend="larger">Instructions</hi> which We (in his <lb xml:id="l2"/><choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> name) do will and require to be Observed <lb xml:id="l3"/>by Iustus Brandshagen and his Assistant <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames <lb xml:id="l4"/>Hamilton in the Survey and Tryall which they <lb xml:id="l5"/>are to make of the Mine with the Mountain <lb xml:id="l6"/>about it called <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Erksines Mine in the <lb xml:id="l7"/>Parish of Alva five Miles from <choice><sic>Sterling</sic><corr>Stirling</corr></choice> East <lb xml:id="l8"/>and by North. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4"><hi rend="largest">Y</hi><hi rend="larger">ou</hi> are to repaire with all convenient speed to the <choice><abbr>s<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l9"/>Mine, And (having the Assistance of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Haldane of <lb xml:id="l10"/>Glenagles Esq<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. who is willing to Encourage and forward this <lb xml:id="l11"/>business) you are to break off or cause to be broken off from <lb xml:id="l12"/>each of the two Veins of Ore which are represented to be in <lb xml:id="l13"/>the said Mine about Six or Eight pounds of Ore, the break<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l14"/>ing off of the said Ore being to be performed in the presence <lb xml:id="l15"/>of the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Haldane, and any One or more of his sons <lb xml:id="l16"/>together with M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Drummond Warden of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Mint <lb xml:id="l17"/>at Edinburgh, or any other person; whom the Earl of Lauder<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l18"/>dale General of the said Mint shall think fit to send thither <lb xml:id="l19"/>And you are to take Care, that the Ore which shall be broke <lb xml:id="l20"/>off in the presence of the said Persons be immediately <lb xml:id="l21"/>sealed up in two papers with the respective seals of the said <lb xml:id="l22"/>persons each paper to have an Inscription denoting what <lb xml:id="l23"/>Vein the parcel of Ore contained therein is taken from, <lb xml:id="l24"/>which Inscriptions are to be signed by your selves and the <lb xml:id="l25"/>aforenamed persons as Witnesses, And then to be safely packed <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">up</fw><pb xml:id="p229v" n="229v"/> up and sent by the best and speediest Conveyance to the Lords Co<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">mi</hi></orig><reg>mmi</reg></choice>ssion<choice><orig><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">rs</add></orig><reg>ers</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l26"/>of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Treasury in Order to be Assayed in London.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5"><hi rend="large">You</hi> are also with the Assistance and in the presence of <lb xml:id="l27"/>the persons aforenamed to break or cause to be broke off other <choice><sic>peices</sic><corr>pieces</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l28"/>of Ore from each of the said Veins and make Assays thereof upon <lb xml:id="l29"/>or near the place where the same shall be taken and repeat the <lb xml:id="l30"/>said Assay Once or twice if need by And the Assays so made <lb xml:id="l31"/>with your Report thereupon are to be immediately sealed up <lb xml:id="l32"/>(the Assays upon each Vein in district Papers) with the <lb xml:id="l33"/>respective Seals of the said persons, And to be inscribed by them <lb xml:id="l34"/>in Testimony that they were made before them, Which Assays <lb xml:id="l35"/>after being so sealed Witnessed and secured as aforesaid are <lb xml:id="l36"/>also to be sent by the same Conveyance to the said Co<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">mi</hi></orig><reg>mmi</reg></choice>ssioners <lb xml:id="l37"/>of his Majesties Treasury.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are to give a discription in Writing of the said <lb xml:id="l38"/>two Veins as to their breadth depth and distance from one <lb xml:id="l39"/>another and to Report which way they run and what sort of <lb xml:id="l40"/>Earth or Stone they are lodged in, and what is the depth of the <lb xml:id="l41"/>Mine and the distance of each Vein from the surface of the <lb xml:id="l42"/>Mountaine where the Mine is lodged, And whether in that Mine <lb xml:id="l43"/>there be any beds of Silver or Copper Ore besides the said two Veins.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par7"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are in the presence and with the Assistance of the <lb xml:id="l44"/>persons aforesaid to Enquire after and Search for Sundry Casks <lb xml:id="l45"/>which We are informed were filled with about Forty Tons of Ore <lb xml:id="l46"/>dug out of the said Mine in the time of the late Rebellion and <lb xml:id="l47"/>buried in the North west side of the Lady Erskines house and <lb xml:id="l48"/>upon finding of the said Ore to make an Assay and Report thereof <lb xml:id="l49"/>in the presence of the persons aforenamed, And then to secure <lb xml:id="l50"/>the remaining Ore in such place and manner as you with <lb xml:id="l51"/>the persons aforenamed or the Major part of you shall think <lb xml:id="l52"/>fit.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par8"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are carefully to View the Burn or Channell made <lb xml:id="l53"/>in the South side of the Mountaine by Floods running down <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">about</fw><pb xml:id="p230r" n="230r"/><fw type="pag" place="bottomLeft">230</fw> about three or four Furlongs Westward from the said Mine <lb xml:id="l54"/>and see what Sparrs and other signs of Minerals are therein <lb xml:id="l55"/>And in Case any Ores of Minerals or Mettals be found there <lb xml:id="l56"/>You are in the presence of the persons aforenamed to Assay <lb xml:id="l57"/>the same, and Report the produce, Witnessing Sealing up <lb xml:id="l58"/>and discribing all Assays to be made by you in like manner <lb xml:id="l59"/>as afore directed.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par9"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are Carefully to View all Sir <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Erskines <lb xml:id="l60"/>part of the Mountain, And Observe what signs of Minerals <lb xml:id="l61"/>appear any where above ground, and Report what you <lb xml:id="l62"/>find, As also any Credible <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="overline">aco</hi>ns</abbr><expan>Informations</expan></choice> that may be given <lb xml:id="l63"/>you concerning any other Mines of Copper or Lead in that <lb xml:id="l64"/>Mountain.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par10"><hi rend="larger">You</hi> are also to repair to a Copper Mine which <lb xml:id="l65"/>lyes (as We are informed) about two Miles Westward from the <lb xml:id="l66"/>aforesaid Mine, And procure some <choice><sic>peices</sic><corr>pieces</corr></choice> of that Ore and <lb xml:id="l67"/>make Assays thereof in the presence of the aforesaid persons <lb xml:id="l68"/>And see how much Copper and how much Silver it holds.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par11"><hi rend="larger">Lastly</hi> You <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Hamilton are to be Ayding <lb xml:id="l69"/>and Assisting to Iustus Brandshagen in all your <choice><abbr>Observ<hi rend="overline">aco</hi>ns</abbr><expan>Observations</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l70"/>Tryalls and Experiments, And both of you to use your best <lb xml:id="l71"/>Skill and diligence in performing the same And inn Case <lb xml:id="l72"/>there be any other Mines within three or four Miles of the <lb xml:id="l73"/>Mine hereby meant to be tryed You may repair thither <lb xml:id="l74"/>and Examin what Silver the Ore may Contain, And <lb xml:id="l75"/>you are to make a return in Writing of all your proceed<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l76"/>ings herein to the Commissioners of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Treasury <lb xml:id="l77"/>with the utmost Expedition that may be. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
