    <p xml:id="par1">King James the first, to signify that he would unite the two kingdoms of <lb xml:id="l1"/>England &amp; Scotland, stiled himself <foreign xml:lang="lat">Magnæ Britanniæ Rex</foreign>, &amp; on the Reverse <lb xml:id="l2"/>of his broad pieces &amp; xx<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> pieces of gold, put this motto: <foreign xml:lang="lat">Faciam cos in gentem <lb xml:id="l3"/>unam</foreign>. I will make them one nation. Ezek. 37. 22. In reference to this <lb xml:id="l4"/>inscription &amp; thereby to signify that her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> hath finished a great &amp; <lb xml:id="l5"/>difficult work, an undert<unclear reason="hand"><del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add></unclear>king of an hundred years standing, I propose <lb xml:id="l6"/>the following Medal.</p>
    
<p xml:id="par2">On the first side her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi></abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> effigies with the inscription <foreign xml:lang="lat">ANNA. D. G. <lb xml:id="l7"/>MAGNÆ  BRITANNIÆ. F. <hi rend="small">ET.</hi> H. REGINA</foreign>. On the second Her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> in royal apparel <lb xml:id="l8"/>in the posture of Britannia sitting on a globe with a speare in her right <lb xml:id="l9"/>hand &amp; a shield standing by her, to represent both her self &amp; her mystical <lb xml:id="l10"/>body Brittania. The sheild to be charged with the new A<del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>ms of great <lb xml:id="l11"/>Britain. In her left hand a Rose <unclear reason="hand" cert="low"><del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add></unclear> Thistle upon one stalk. The Rose towards <lb xml:id="l12"/>her right hand. In the prospect below, two rivers (Tamesis &amp; Boderia) unite <lb xml:id="l13"/>into one common stream. Over her head two hands, to signify that this <lb xml:id="l14"/>union is the work of heaven, come out of the clouds holding a single Crown <lb xml:id="l15"/>to crown her. The motto is, <foreign xml:lang="lat">FECI. EOS. IN. GENTEM. UNAM.</foreign> And in the <lb xml:id="l16"/>Exergue, <foreign xml:lang="lat">I. MAII. MDCCVII.</foreign></p>
    
<p xml:id="par3">In this designe the union is represented by the single crown in two <lb xml:id="l17"/>hands, by the Rose &amp; Thistle upon one stalk, by the new Arms of great <lb xml:id="l18"/>B<unclear reason="hand"><del type="over"><gap reason="over" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">rit</add></unclear>ain upon the sheild, &amp; by the two Rivers Thames &amp; Forth uniting; <lb xml:id="l19"/>for rivers were anciently the emblemes of Kingdomes. By the Motto <lb xml:id="l20"/>the Vnion is referred to the Queen as the minister of heaven in this work. <lb xml:id="l21"/>And altho this Motto may at first seem flat, yet being compared with <lb xml:id="l22"/>that on the gold coynes of K. <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames I, &amp; with the Prophesy of Ezekiel to <lb xml:id="l23"/><choice><abbr>wch</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> it alludes, it will appear very significant, comprehensive, grave, lively, <lb xml:id="l24"/>pious &amp; majestick, &amp; perhaps the most apposite of any that can be thought <lb xml:id="l25"/>of. A poetical Motto is not so grave for such an occasion.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">Two women hand in hand imply only a federal union, or only such <lb xml:id="l26"/>an union as is represented by the Motto on the money of K. Charles I, <foreign xml:lang="lat">Florent <lb xml:id="l27"/>concordia regna</foreign>. England &amp; Scotland, after the union should be remembered no more, <lb xml:id="l28"/>&amp; therefore in the Medal they should be only glanced at &amp; not made too <lb xml:id="l29"/>conspicuous. However for variety, I have caused two draughts of women to <lb xml:id="l30"/>be made, together with two other draughts on the next pages; but prefer <lb xml:id="l31"/>that above. The draughts were made in hast, &amp; when the designe in gene<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l32"/>ral is resolved upon, the Graver will be more exact.</p>
