                <p xml:id="par1"><hi rend="large">If</hi> Copper be mixed with any other base metall or semi-metall <lb xml:id="l1"/>it will not endure the hammer when red hot but fly in pieces. So soon as it <lb xml:id="l2"/>is refined by the Copper-workers <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">d</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>o that degree as to be purged from all other <lb xml:id="l3"/>base metalls, it begins to endure the hammer hen red h<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>t &amp; to be worth <lb xml:id="l4"/>about 98 or 100<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> per Tunn; &amp; such copper they call fine copper. <lb xml:id="l5"/>For making Copper Vessels they refine it a littl<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> higher, &amp; for drawing <lb xml:id="l6"/>into wyer they refine it still higher. But for money it suffices to refine <lb xml:id="l7"/>it till it begins to beare the ha<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>mer when red hot. They that work <lb xml:id="l8"/>in copper can readily judge of the fineness also by breaking off a little <lb xml:id="l9"/>piece &amp; observing the grain &amp; colour where it breaks. There is also <lb xml:id="l10"/>a way of assaying copper by separating the other base metalls <lb xml:id="l11"/>from it, but the assay by the hammer I reccon sufficient for the Mint. <lb xml:id="l12"/>For it will be proper for the Master &amp; Worker not to receive course <lb xml:id="l13"/>copper &amp; put it out to refine as is done in gold &amp; silver, but only to <lb xml:id="l14"/>receive it when refined to the degree above mentioned.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">In the reign of King Charles II a pound weight of Swedish <lb xml:id="l15"/>copper was cut into 20<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. The copper &amp; making the blanks cost 1<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">8</add><hi rend="superscript">d</hi> <lb xml:id="l16"/>the stamping <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">1</add><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>, &amp; a penny remained for other charges.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">A pound weight of fine English copper such as will endure the <lb xml:id="l17"/>assay above mentioned will <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">cost</add> 10<formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> or 10<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>3</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi>, &amp; the coynage will cost <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l18"/>5<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula> or 5<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>3</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula> including the work of the Smith &amp; Graver: so that the <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l19"/>who<tei:del xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="over">s</tei:del><tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="over" indicator="no">l</tei:add>e charge of copper &amp; coynage will scarce exceed 16<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> per pound <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l20"/>weight averdupoise. And if the same be edged the edging will cost <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l21"/>a penny more. And if a pound weight not edged be cut into 19<tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi>, or a <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l22"/>pound weight edged be cut int<tei:del xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="over" indicator="no">o</tei:add> 20<tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi>, there will remain 2<tei:formula xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> per pound <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l23"/>weight for purchasing Mills &amp; Presses &amp; setting up a copper Mint, &amp; <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l24"/>paying Clerks &amp; incident charges of assaying, weighing, telling, porterage<tei:add xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" place="infralinear" indicator="no">,</tei:add> <tei:lb xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="l25"/>putting off, &amp;c</p>
                
                <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par4">The Mills &amp; Presses &amp; other Engines for setting up a copper Mint <tei:lb xml:id="l26"/>will cost six or seven hundred pounds. And three farthings per <tei:lb xml:id="l27"/>p<tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">o</tei:add>und weight in coy<tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">n</tei:add>ing an hundred tunns will pay that charge. <tei:lb xml:id="l28"/>And when a copper Mint is set up, a pound weight of copper <tei:lb xml:id="l29"/>may be cut int<tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">o</tei:add> 18<tei:formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> or 18<tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> not edged, or a penny more if edged.</tei:p>
                
                <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par5">The weight of all the copper received, &amp; the weight &amp; ta<tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">le</tei:add> of <tei:lb xml:id="l30"/>all the copper money coined may be entred in books &amp; in the Master <tei:lb xml:id="l31"/>&amp; Workers account, &amp; the surplus above all charges may be paid into <tei:lb xml:id="l32"/>the Exchequer.</tei:p>
