<p>Complains that whereas formerly he was paid £250 a piece for making puncheons, he now has to receive puncheons from London which have proven broken or faulty. He is repairing or replacing these and hopes that due recompense will be forthcoming.</p>

<p xml:id="par3">I am much at a stand what to think or say concerning my Office of Engraver and <lb xml:id="l1"/>Sinker to the Mint at Edenbrough for which I have a gift during life: Formerly when <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>Punshion's were made by M<hi rend="superscript">r.</hi> Rotiers our Master worker had 250<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">lib</hi></hi> allowed to him to get <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">em</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> made <lb xml:id="l3"/>and he bargained with <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Rotiers for 200 <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">lib</hi></abbr><expan>pounds</expan></choice> which he payd: And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">en</hi></abbr><expan>then</expan></choice> every thing needfull to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l4"/>compleeting of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Coyn came down with <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Punshions which I my selfe received, and gave receit <lb xml:id="l5"/>to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Privy-Counsel for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">em</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice>. And when I made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Punshions here at Edenbrough I had <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l6"/>250 <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">lib</hi></abbr><expan>pounds</expan></choice> payd to me for making of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">em</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice>, for my Sallary is but 50 <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">lib</hi></abbr><expan>pounds</expan></choice> per Annum as sinker <lb xml:id="l7"/>and that betwixt me and my Conjunct or college But now of late I have received Punshions <lb xml:id="l8"/>for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heads &amp; Reverses of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Shilling &amp; Sixpence with some dyes sunk &amp; finished from <lb xml:id="l9"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">em</hi></abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> but our Warden either did not know it or your gravers forgott to send down <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> small <lb xml:id="l10"/>Punshions for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Armes of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Reverses &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> letters for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> inscriptions. The sixpence head <lb xml:id="l11"/>Punshion was broken before I did see it and now it is all shaken &amp; split with <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sinking <lb xml:id="l12"/>only of two dyes. I have made a new sixpence head and am going to make a new  <lb xml:id="l13"/>Reverse punshion for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> shilling by reason <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sides of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> shields are some sunk and <lb xml:id="l14"/>some broken but upon what account I should do this I know not And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> best expedient <lb xml:id="l15"/>I can think on is to refer my selfe to your honour's advise &amp; Counsell what I <lb xml:id="l16"/>shall do in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Matter. So beging pardon for this trouble &amp; your honours Answer I am</p>
