    <p rend="center" xml:id="par1"><hi rend="larger">Observations</hi> <hi rend="large">upon the valuation of Gold <lb xml:id="l1"/>and Silver in proportion to one another.</hi> <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2"><hi rend="large">A</hi> Spanish Pistole coyned for 32 Reaus or four piece of <lb xml:id="l2"/>eight &amp; is the sixteenth part of the weight thereof &amp; of like allay.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par3">A Doppia Moeda or Moyder of Portugal was coyned for 4000 Res <lb xml:id="l3"/>or ten Crusados, &amp; is the sixteenth part of the weight thereof &amp; of <lb xml:id="l4"/>like allay.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">Gold is therefore by the standards of Spain &amp; Portugal, of sixteen <lb xml:id="l5"/>times more value then silver of like allay &amp; equal weight. And at <lb xml:id="l6"/>this rate a Guinea is worth so much fine silver as is conteined <lb xml:id="l7"/>in 22<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> 1<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> of English money of just weight and allay. Now this <lb xml:id="l8"/>high value carries away the silver from Spain as fast as it comes <lb xml:id="l9"/>from the west Indies, &amp; the scarcity of silver in that kingdom <lb xml:id="l10"/>(&amp; I think also in Portugal) puts them upon making their <lb xml:id="l11"/>payments at home in Gold &amp; refusing to pay in silver without <lb xml:id="l12"/>a premium of six per cent. At <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> rate a Guinea is worth <lb xml:id="l13"/>20<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 9<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par5">In France by the Edict of May 1709 a new Lewid'or was coyned <lb xml:id="l14"/>for 20 Livres or four new Lewises of silver &amp; is <del type="strikethrough">of like</del> the <lb xml:id="l15"/>fifteenth part of the weight thereof &amp; of equal allay. And by the <lb xml:id="l16"/>same Edict fine Go<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">l</add>d is valued at fifteen times its weight of <lb xml:id="l17"/>fine silver. At which rate a guinea is worth 20<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> 8<hi rend="superscript">d</hi><formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></formula> in silver</p>
    
    <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par6">In Holland the Ducat <tei:del type="over">is</tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">of</tei:add> Holland &amp; that of the Empire is <tei:lb xml:id="l18"/>current at 5 Guilders &amp; 5 stivers, that is, at so much fine silver <tei:lb xml:id="l19"/>as is conteined in 9<tei:hi rend="superscript">s</tei:hi> 1<tei:formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>4</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> English. At <tei:choice><tei:abbr>w<tei:hi rend="superscript">ch</tei:hi></tei:abbr><tei:expan>which</tei:expan></tei:choice> rate a Guinea is worth <tei:lb xml:id="l20"/>20<tei:hi rend="superscript">s</tei:hi> 7<tei:formula><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mfrac><mn>1</mn><mn>2</mn></mfrac></math></tei:formula><tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi>.</tei:p>
    
    <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par7">At Hannover the Ducat is valued at two old Rix Dollers <tei:lb xml:id="l21"/>or four Guilders, that is, at 9<tei:hi rend="superscript">s</tei:hi> 1<tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> English. And Gold bears much <tei:lb xml:id="l22"/>the same proportion to silver in Italy as in Germany.</tei:p>
    
    <tei:p xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:id="par8">In England therefore that Gold &amp; Silver may have the <tei:lb xml:id="l23"/>same proportion to one another as in the neighbouring parts <tei:lb xml:id="l24"/>of Europe, a Guinea should be va<tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">lu</tei:add>ed at <tei:add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes"><tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">t</tei:add>wenty shillings &amp; 7<tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> &amp; 8<tei:hi rend="superscript">d</tei:hi> or at the most, one pound weight of fine gold should be</tei:add> <tei:add place="infralinear lineBeginning" indicator="no">valued at</tei:add> fifteen pounds weight <tei:lb xml:id="l25"/>of fine silver<tei:add place="inline" indicator="no">,</tei:add> <tei:del type="cancelled">in England</tei:del> whereas one pound weight of fine <tei:lb xml:id="l26"/>silver <tei:lb xml:id="l27"/>Gold <tei:del type="strikethrough">should be</tei:del><tei:add place="supralinear" indicator="no">is at present</tei:add> valued at fifteen pounds weight <tei:del type="strikethrough">of <tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></tei:del> six ounces <tei:lb xml:id="l28"/>seventeen penny weight &amp; five grains of fine silver, which is <tei:lb xml:id="l29"/>almost four per cent <tei:del type="over"><tei:gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></tei:del><tei:add place="over" indicator="no">too</tei:add> high.</tei:p>
