    <p xml:id="par2"><del type="strikethrough">Meeting with</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Finding</add> reason to suspect that the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">present indented</add> trial piece of Gold <del type="strikethrough">made last <lb xml:id="l1"/>summer was three years,</del> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">by</unclear></del> <del type="over">is</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ar</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">e</add> too fine I have <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> nicely examined <del type="strikethrough">the<add place="inline" indicator="no">m</add> matter</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">that in my <unclear reason="copy" cert="low">keep</unclear></add> <lb xml:id="l2"/>&amp; find by many assays that <add place="inline" indicator="no">t</add><del type="over">it</del><add place="over" indicator="no">it</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">y</add> <del type="strikethrough">is</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">are</add> finer then the former trial pieces made in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l3"/><del type="strikethrough">reign of king</del> year 1688 by about a quarter of a grain <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">tho that the last trial piece be <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">also</add> something too fine <del type="strikethrough">by the</del> assay</add>. Which <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">differences</add> being <del type="strikethrough">a difference</del> <lb xml:id="l4"/>of great consequence, I have further endeavoured to find out the reason thereof <lb xml:id="l5"/><del type="strikethrough">for preventing</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">that</add> the like accidents <del type="strikethrough">for the <del type="cancelled">fu<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> future in making new trial <lb xml:id="l6"/>pieces when e<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">v</add>er it shall be thought fit to have new ones made. And <add place="inline" indicator="no">I</add> find</del><add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="no">in making new trial pieces hereafter may be <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">prevented</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l7"/>avoided. And <del type="strikethrough">I have</del> by the assay I am satisfied</add> <lb xml:id="l8"/>that there are <del type="strikethrough">different <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="5"/></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">various degrees</add> of fine gold, <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">so</add>me <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">fine gold</del></add> being 24 carats fine by the <lb xml:id="l9"/>assay, some a quarter of a grain <del type="cancelled">fi</del> coarser or finer or above, &amp; that gold may be <lb xml:id="l10"/>refined so high a<del type="over">t</del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add> to be almost half a grain finer then 24 carats by the assay. <lb xml:id="l11"/>And accordingly as <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the fine</add> gold <del type="strikethrough">is refined more or less</del> of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the standard <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">pieces are</add> made is <lb xml:id="l12"/>finer or coarser the standard pieces will be finer or c<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>arse<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add> in proportion. <lb xml:id="l13"/><del type="strikethrough"><del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">a</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nd from <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">all</unclear></del> this matter of fact</del><del type="blockStrikethrough"><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>And thence</add> arise these considerations. Whether there <lb xml:id="l14"/>should not be <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>ne commo<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add> standard for <del type="cancelled">all</del> the <del type="strikethrough">market the</del> money the <del type="strikethrough">markets</del> <lb xml:id="l15"/>pla<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>e &amp; the <del type="strikethrough">market</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Merchants gold</add> in all great <del type="over">b</del><add place="over" indicator="no">B</add>ritain, &amp; whether this standard should not be <lb xml:id="l16"/>setled by the assay &amp; preserved in the Exchequer for a rule to Iuries in making <lb xml:id="l17"/>trial pieces for the future? And whether new trial pieces should not be made <lb xml:id="l18"/><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ccording to this rule? And the like for silver?</del></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par3">All <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> &amp;c</p>
        
        <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">By which means the standard of gold is rendred very uncertain notwithstanding the fidelity <lb xml:id="l19"/>of <del type="strikethrough">a jury</del> Iuries. <add place="inline" indicator="no">And what I have said of gold may be applied to silver.</add></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par5">I humbly off<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">er</add> therefore to your Lordships consideration <del type="strikethrough">that</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">whether</add> there should <lb xml:id="l20"/>not be one common standard <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> of gold &amp; one of silver for the money place &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">merchantable</add> Ingots <lb xml:id="l21"/><del type="strikethrough">of Merchants</del> in all great Britain, setled by the as<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ay<del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">;</add> &amp; whether the standard once <lb xml:id="l22"/>setled should not be preserved in the Exchequer for a rule to Iuries in making <lb xml:id="l23"/>trial pieces for the future<del type="strikethrough">. And whether new Trial p<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>eces should not be <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">now</add> made <lb xml:id="l24"/>this year according to this standard</del> without varying.</p>
