    <p xml:id="par1"><hi rend="large">The Act</hi> of 18 Car. II chap. 5 saith that <hi rend="underline">no moneys leviable &amp; payable <lb xml:id="l1"/>by this Act shall be applied or converted to any use or uses whatsoever <lb xml:id="l2"/>other then to the defraying the charge or expence of the Mint or Mints <lb xml:id="l3"/>&amp;</hi><choice><orig> <del type="blockStrikethrough">[that]</del> </orig><reg><hi rend="underline"> </hi></reg></choice><hi rend="underline">of the Assaying melting down wast &amp; coinage of Gold &amp; Silver <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; this encouragement of bringing in of Gold &amp; Silver into t<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>e <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">coyned</unclear></del> said <lb xml:id="l5"/>Mint or Mints there to be coyned</hi> &amp;c. The first is the charge of sup<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l6"/>porting a standing Mint, the second is the further charge of carrying <lb xml:id="l7"/>on the coynage in that Mint. And by the next clause of the <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>ct the <lb xml:id="l8"/>first is limited to 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> for preventing needless extravagance &amp; the other <lb xml:id="l9"/>is left unlimited for encouraging the coynage. The words are: <lb xml:id="l10"/><hi rend="underline">And it is hereby further enacted that there shall not be issued out of the <lb xml:id="l11"/>Exchequer of the said moneys, in any one year, for the fees &amp; salaries of <lb xml:id="l12"/>the Officers of the Mint or Mints &amp; towards the providing maintaining <lb xml:id="l13"/>&amp; repairing of the Ho<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">u</add>ses Offices &amp; Buildings &amp; other</hi><choice><orig> <del type="blockStrikethrough">[standing]</del> </orig><reg><hi rend="underline"> </hi></reg></choice><lb xml:id="l14"/><hi rend="underline">necessaries for assaying melting down &amp; coyning above the summ of <lb xml:id="l15"/>three thousand pounds sterling money, &amp; the overplus of the said <lb xml:id="l16"/>moneys so kept or to be kept as aforesaid shall  be employed for <lb xml:id="l17"/>&amp; towards <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">the</add></hi><choice><orig> <del type="blockStrikethrough">[contingent]</del> </orig><reg><hi rend="underline"> </hi></reg></choice><hi rend="underline">expence wast &amp; charges of assaying <lb xml:id="l18"/>melting down &amp; coyna<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">g</add>e &amp; buying in of gold &amp; silver to be <lb xml:id="l19"/>coyned, &amp; not otherwise</hi>. Here the charge of salaries &amp; buildings <lb xml:id="l20"/>with their appurtenances necessary for constituting a Mint, (such <lb xml:id="l21"/>as are Hearths &amp; Chimneys convenient for furnaces, floors convenient <lb xml:id="l22"/>for Mill-rooms, blocks convenient for the Presses &amp; Flatters, benches <lb xml:id="l23"/>convenient for the Cutters &amp; for the Graver &amp; Smith, Tables conveni<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l24"/>ent for sizing &amp; for Weighing &amp; telling, stalls &amp; Desks for the Clerks <lb xml:id="l25"/>to rate &amp; standard, money chests &amp; boxes for the Treasury &amp; Pix, <lb xml:id="l26"/>Locks for the Offices, Gates for the Mint &amp; Wells Pumps &amp; Pip<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">es</add> for <lb xml:id="l27"/>water) are limited to 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. And the overplus is for defraying <lb xml:id="l28"/>the charges arising by the coynage, such as are the charge of <lb xml:id="l29"/>stationary ware for the Clerks, <choice><orig>b</orig><reg><hi rend="underline">b</hi></reg></choice><hi rend="underline">allances &amp; weigh</hi><choice><orig>ts</orig><reg><hi rend="underline">ts</hi></reg></choice> for the severall <lb xml:id="l30"/>Offices, <choice><orig>F</orig><reg><hi rend="underline">F</hi></reg></choice><hi rend="underline">urnace</hi><choice><orig>s</orig><reg><hi rend="underline">s</hi></reg></choice>, Cuppels, water-silver, Aqua fortis &amp; Charcoal for the <lb xml:id="l31"/>Assay-Office, Refining &amp; Allay for bringing the gold &amp; silver to stand<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l32"/>ard, Flasks <choice><orig>f</orig><reg><hi rend="underline">f</hi></reg></choice><hi rend="underline">urnaces</hi> melting &amp; wast in the Melting houses, <hi rend="underline">Mills <lb xml:id="l33"/>Dyes</hi> coining &amp; wast in other Offices, Indentures &amp; Warrants for <lb xml:id="l34"/>carrying on the coynage, &amp; charges of making Tryal-pieces &amp; trying <lb xml:id="l35"/>the Pix.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2">After the making of this Act, the salaries upon the <choice><abbr>establishm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>establishment</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l36"/>of the Indenture of the Mint amounted unto 2600<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; there <lb xml:id="l37"/>remained only 400<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> for the providing &amp; repairing of buildings, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l38"/>charge in the old Accounts usually amounted unto two or three &amp; <lb xml:id="l39"/>sometimes almost four hundred pounds per <choice><abbr>an<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice>, or within 20 or <lb xml:id="l40"/>25<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> over or under. And there is an Article in the Indenture <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l41"/>obliges the Mast<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>r to pay unto the Warden such summ <del type="over">or</del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> summs <lb xml:id="l42"/>as are payable by him for salaries &amp; repairs &amp; such other expences of <lb xml:id="l43"/>the Mint as have been heretofore usually paid by him.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par3">The Act made in the 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> &amp; 5<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> year o<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add> her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> reign for en<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l44"/><fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">larging</fw><pb xml:id="p337v" n="337v"/>larging the summe of 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. to that of 3500<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> was not intended <lb xml:id="l45"/>to charge the 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> with any sort of payments <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> had not been <lb xml:id="l46"/>used to be put upon it, but on the contrary to make more room <lb xml:id="l47"/>for bearing those sorts of payments <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> used to be put upon it <lb xml:id="l48"/>as the words of the P<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>eamble of the Act import. And ac<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l49"/>cordingly <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add> new salary of 400<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> was setled upon <lb xml:id="l50"/>the Moneyers presently after the passing of the Act. And the <lb xml:id="l51"/>salaries of the Clerks of the Mint being thought too small <lb xml:id="l52"/>were intended to <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>e augmented. But it was thought fit first <lb xml:id="l53"/>to take care of the old buildings <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> were ready to fall. And <lb xml:id="l54"/>since that time there has been spent upon rebuilding about 900<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> or <lb xml:id="l55"/>1000<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>. As a p<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>rt of the charge of rebuilding the Engineers <lb xml:id="l56"/>shop comes into the Account of the year 1712.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">In the Account of that year the salaries upon the <lb xml:id="l57"/>Indenture payable by the Warden are 1435<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>, those payable <lb xml:id="l58"/>by the Master to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Officers under him 1080<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>, to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Smith 40<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> <lb xml:id="l59"/>in lieu of 50<hi rend="superscript">li</hi>, to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Graver for an Apprentice 35<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> in lieu <lb xml:id="l60"/>of 95<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi><del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">.</add> The new salary to the Moneyers is 400<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. And the <lb xml:id="l61"/>charges of the buildings in the Wardens Account are in one <lb xml:id="l62"/>Article 389<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. 2<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>, in another 11<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. 13<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. 6<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.
