    <p xml:id="par1">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadhams paper of reasons against M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattel is full of <lb xml:id="l1"/>mistakes. <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton was the first man who proposed a <lb xml:id="l2"/>trial between the Petitioners &amp; never opposed or discouraged it <lb xml:id="l3"/>or affirmed that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattel could not do the business of an Assay<lb xml:id="l4"/>master without an Assistant, nor know of any hardships or <lb xml:id="l5"/>impositions in the trial between them, nor of any Reference <lb xml:id="l6"/>of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadhams Petition from the King to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Treasury, nor is <lb xml:id="l7"/>the place of Assaymaster in the <del type="cancelled">Kings</del> gift of the Lords of <lb xml:id="l8"/>the Treasury but in that of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> who hath given it <lb xml:id="l9"/>to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattel, &amp; <del type="strikethrough">in all M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattels paper of reasons there <lb xml:id="l10"/>is not one reason for coiding the grant.</del> The Act of 2 H. 6 doth <lb xml:id="l11"/>not <del type="strikethrough">make it void</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">void the grant</add>, nor exclude<del type="strikethrough">s</del> the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Mint</add> Master <del type="strikethrough">&amp; Worker</del> from joyning <lb xml:id="l12"/>with his fellow Officers in recommending an Assaymaster. <del type="strikethrough">The <lb xml:id="l13"/>Mint Master <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">He</del></add> can make no advantage by bad assay &amp;</del> <del type="over">t</del><add place="over" indicator="no">T</add>o recommend <lb xml:id="l14"/>a good <del type="strikethrough">Assayer</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">one</add> is as much his Duty as any mans &amp; much more <lb xml:id="l15"/>his interest <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; concern</add> because he <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> can make no advantage by bad assays but</add> may be ruined by <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">e</add><add place="infralinear" indicator="no">m</add> <del type="strikethrough">bad one</del>. And therefore <lb xml:id="l16"/>his recommendation is more to be regarded <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in point of impartiality</add> then that of any other <lb xml:id="l17"/>subject whatsoever.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadham pretends that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattels incapacity &amp; unfairness <lb xml:id="l18"/>can be proved. <del type="strikethrough">But</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Whereas</add> upon the Trial between them, seven of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l19"/>Brattels eight Assays of Gold agreed <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> one another without any <lb xml:id="l20"/>sensible difference &amp; the eighth differed from the rest only the <lb xml:id="l21"/>twelft part of a grain: whilst some of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadham's gold Assays <lb xml:id="l22"/>differed a quarter of a grain from o<del type="over">n</del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add>e<add place="inline" indicator="no">rs</add> <del type="strikethrough">another</del> &amp; one of them <lb xml:id="l23"/>erred two grains <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <del type="strikethrough">three times the Remedy &amp;</del> 24 times <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">more then</add> the <lb xml:id="l24"/>greatest error of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattel: &amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattel was also observed <lb xml:id="l25"/>to <choice><sic>het</sic><corr>heat</corr></choice> with more dexterity &amp; dispatch then M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadham. And <lb xml:id="l26"/><add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del>as for the<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ir</add> <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="copy" unit="chars" extent="3"/>dit in point</del> other qualifications <choice><sic>it was then thought unadvisable</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> it was then thought unadvisable to <del type="strikethrough">venture the credit of the Mint <lb xml:id="l27"/>upon a person who in his Apprentis-ship had neglected his Masters <lb xml:id="l28"/>business to mind projects, &amp; when his time was out, left his Trade <lb xml:id="l29"/>to turn Broker, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del></del> to reject a person who with his brother had <lb xml:id="l30"/>kept up &amp; improved the credit of the Mint upon a person who in his <lb xml:id="l31"/>Apprentisship had neglected his Masters business to mind Projects <lb xml:id="l32"/>&amp; when his time was out left his trade to buy &amp; sell stocks, &amp; was <lb xml:id="l33"/>suspected to have sent <del type="strikethrough">a mess</del> to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Brattel an Offer of the place <lb xml:id="l34"/>for a summ of money, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> suspicion has been <del type="strikethrough"><del type="over"><unclear reason="del">inc</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">con</add>firmed by</del> increased <lb xml:id="l35"/>by a <del type="strikethrough">late</del> report of <del type="strikethrough">the same kind</del> his talking lately to the same <lb xml:id="l36"/>purpose, not to mention his carriage to the Officers of the Min in <lb xml:id="l37"/>such a manner as is not to be born in an Assaymaster.</p>
