    <p xml:id="par1">The place of assay Master of his Majestys Mint becomeing vacant in <lb xml:id="l1"/>Ia<hi rend="overline">nry</hi> 1712<choice><sic>/</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> Catesby Oadham (who was bred a Refiner and had gain'd good <lb xml:id="l2"/>experience in Assaying) being a candidate for the same, did by the <lb xml:id="l3"/>direction of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Taylor of the <choice><abbr>Tre<hi rend="overline">ary</hi></abbr><expan>Treasury</expan></choice> aply to <choice><abbr>Sr</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton to be <lb xml:id="l4"/>try'd against any other candidate to whom <choice><abbr>Sr</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac answer'd we have <lb xml:id="l5"/>reported M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Bratle to be the fittest person without makeing any <lb xml:id="l6"/>tryal tho Oadham is inform'd that about that time <choice><abbr>Sr</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac <lb xml:id="l7"/>did confess to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Kemp who was then a competitor for the place <lb xml:id="l8"/>that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Bratle cou'd not doe the business of an Assay <choice><abbr>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Master</expan></choice> without <lb xml:id="l9"/>an Assistant</p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">On the 8°. of April 1713 M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadham was try'd against M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Bratle before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/>officers of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mint who had before declared Bratle to be the fittest <lb xml:id="l11"/>person, and afterwards made the same report tho they did allow M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <lb xml:id="l12"/>Oadham to be a good Assay <choice><abbr>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Master</expan></choice> but Oadham setting forth the hardships <lb xml:id="l13"/>and impositions of that tryal was by the direction of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> late <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l14"/><choice><abbr>tr<hi rend="overline">ear</hi></abbr><expan>treasurer</expan></choice> Oxford tryd in the whole mistery of assaying under the inspection of <lb xml:id="l15"/>the Earl of Yarmouth who amply certifyd his Quallifycations as apears <lb xml:id="l16"/>by his anexed certific<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>te to a petition which M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadham presented <lb xml:id="l17"/>to his Majesty who was graciously pleas'd to Order the <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">ds</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lords</expan></choice> of the <choice><abbr>Tre<hi rend="overline">ary</hi></abbr><expan>Treasury</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l18"/>to Enquire into the Merits of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> pretenders, and to doe Iustice accordingly <lb xml:id="l19"/>by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Bratle, or <choice><abbr>Sr</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton hearing of this Vtterance and being <lb xml:id="l20"/>unwilling to stand the tryal obtain'd a Warrant for M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Bratles <lb xml:id="l21"/>having the patent before the petition, certificates, and utterence <lb xml:id="l22"/>could be read in the <choice><abbr>tr<hi rend="overline">eary</hi></abbr><expan>treasury</expan></choice></p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Oadham hereupon Aplys to the Privy councol from whence his <choice><abbr>peti<hi rend="overline">con</hi></abbr><expan>petition</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l23"/>went, and is promisd that the <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> president will call for the said <choice><abbr>peti<hi rend="overline">con</hi></abbr><expan>petition</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l24"/>the first general council day when the <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> Hallifax will be present <lb xml:id="l25"/>and that matter determind in council he therefore insists that no grant for <lb xml:id="l26"/>such patent passes the privy seal til this Examination is over it being of <lb xml:id="l27"/>the greatest concern to the credit of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Nation that this Employment be in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi>.</abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> hands <lb xml:id="l28"/>of a <choice><sic>thoroug</sic><corr>thorough</corr></choice> quallifyd person and altho the Employment is in the fit of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">ds</hi></abbr><expan>Lords</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l29"/>of the <choice><abbr>tr<hi rend="overline">eary</hi></abbr><expan>treasury</expan></choice> he is perswaded their <choice><abbr><hi rend="underline">Lps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> will desire the tryal especially <lb xml:id="l30"/>since <choice><abbr>Sr</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton who reco<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ends Bratle is excluded from such a <lb xml:id="l31"/>reco<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>endation by an Act of Parliament 2°.
