    <p rend="indent5" xml:id="par2">The humble <del type="strikethrough">Petition</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Representation</add> of Catesby Oadham <choice><abbr>Gen</abbr><expan>Gentleman</expan></choice></p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3"><hi rend="large">Sheweth.</hi></p>
    
    <p rend="indent10" xml:id="par4">That the place of assay master of his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>Mint becoming Vacant in Ia<hi rend="overline">ny</hi> 1712. Catesby Oadham (who <lb xml:id="l3"/>was <unclear reason="faded" cert="low">bred</unclear> as Refiner and had gained good experience in assaying) <lb xml:id="l4"/>being a Candidate for the same did by the direction of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Taylor <lb xml:id="l5"/>of the Treasury aply to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton to be try'd <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> any other <lb xml:id="l6"/>Candidate to whome <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac answer'd we have reported <lb xml:id="l7"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Bratle to be the fittest person, without makeing any <lb xml:id="l8"/>tryall tho Oadham is inform'd that <choice><abbr>ab<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> that time <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac <lb xml:id="l9"/>did confess to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Kemp who was then a Competitor for the <lb xml:id="l10"/>place that Bratle could not doe the business of an Assay Master <lb xml:id="l11"/>without an Assistant.</p>
    
    <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">On the 8<hi rend="superscript">ce</hi>. of Aprill 1713. Oadham was try'd <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Bratle before <lb xml:id="l12"/>the officers of the Mint, who had before declard M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Bratle to be <lb xml:id="l13"/>the fittest person, and afterwards made the same report tho <lb xml:id="l14"/>they did allow Oad<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">h</add>am to be a good Assay Master, but Oadham <lb xml:id="l15"/>setting forth the hardships of that Tryall was by the direction of <lb xml:id="l16"/>the late <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> Treasurer Oxford tryed in the whole mistery of <lb xml:id="l17"/>Assaying under the inspection of the Earl of Yarmouth who <lb xml:id="l18"/>amply Certified his qualifications as apears by his anexed <lb xml:id="l19"/>Certificate to a petition <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi>.</abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Oadham presented to his <lb xml:id="l20"/><choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">tie</hi>.</abbr><expan>Majestie</expan></choice> who was graciously pleased to Order the <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">ds</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lords</expan></choice> of the <lb xml:id="l21"/>Treasury to Enquire into the Mer<del type="over">rit</del><add place="over" indicator="no">its</add> of the Pretender and to <lb xml:id="l22"/>doe justice accordingly. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="6"/> but M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Bra<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>le or <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac <lb xml:id="l23"/>Newton hearing of this refference and being unwilling to <lb xml:id="l24"/>stand the tryall obtaind a <choice><abbr>Warr<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Warrant</expan></choice> for M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Bratles haveing a <lb xml:id="l25"/>Patent, before the Petition, Certificates, and refference could <lb xml:id="l26"/>be read in the Treasury.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par6">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Oadham hereupon aplys to the Privy council from <lb xml:id="l27"/>whence his Petition went, and is promissed that the <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> <hi rend="underline">President</hi> <lb xml:id="l28"/>will call for the said petition the first general Councill day 
        
        <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">when <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> Hallifax</fw><pb xml:id="p094v" n="94v"/>
        
        When Lord Hallifax will be present and that <choice><abbr>Matt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Matter</expan></choice> determind <lb xml:id="l29"/>in councill, he therefore insists that no grant for such Pa<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>ent <lb xml:id="l30"/>passes the Privy seal till this Examina<choice><orig>ī</orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on is over it being of the <lb xml:id="l31"/>greatest concern to the Credit of the Nation that th<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">e</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">is</add> Employ be in <lb xml:id="l32"/>the hands of a <choice><sic>through</sic><corr>thorough</corr></choice> quallify'd person and altho the <choice><abbr>Employm<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Employment</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l33"/>is in the gift of the Lords of the Treasury, he is p<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>er</reg></choice>swaded their <lb xml:id="l34"/><choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="overline">pp</hi>s</abbr><expan>Lordshipps</expan></choice> will desire the tryall especially since <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> Isaac Newton <lb xml:id="l35"/>who reco<choice><orig>m̄</orig><reg>mm</reg></choice>ends Bratle is excluded from such a recomendation <lb xml:id="l36"/>by Act of <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> 2°. Oadham can bring Vnque<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">sti</add>onable Witnesses <lb xml:id="l37"/>to prove M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Bratle his incapacity and Vnfa<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ir</add>ness in <lb xml:id="l38"/>Assaying.</p>
