                <p xml:id="par2">In obedience to <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> Order of Reference signified to us by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lowndes his <lb xml:id="l1"/>Letter of <del type="strikethrough">Iuly</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Aug 8</add> <choice><orig><space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="3"/></orig><reg/></choice> <del type="strikethrough">we have considered the Petitions of Coll. Parsons &amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Croker <lb xml:id="l2"/>&amp; <unclear reason="del" cert="low">discoured</unclear> the Petitioners &amp; also spoke <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rosse &amp; we</del> <choice><sic>find that Coll.</sic><corr type="delText">find that Coll.</corr></choice><add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="no">wherein we are directed to consider the Qualifications of Col. Parsons M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Croker <lb xml:id="l3"/>&amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rosse to succeed M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Harris in the place of Graver of the Mint we have discoursed the<add place="inline" indicator="no">m</add> <del type="strikethrough">Petitioners</del> <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; find that Coll.</add> <lb xml:id="l5"/>Parsons doth not grave himself but <del type="strikethrough">directs &amp;</del> imploys good workmen &amp; has a good fansy <lb xml:id="l6"/>&amp; <choice><abbr>judgem<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>judgement</expan></choice> in those matters &amp; that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rosse desires to succeed M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Harris only <lb xml:id="l7"/>in his place of Graver of Seales to her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> &amp; by a Seale <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> h<del type="over">is</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> has <lb xml:id="l8"/>graved for the Dutchy of Lancaster he seems to be a good workman for <lb xml:id="l9"/>seales &amp; sufficiently qualified for that place.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">But as for M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Harris's other two places of Graver for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> money &amp; for <lb xml:id="l10"/>Medals, we humbly lay before <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Master of the Mint upon <lb xml:id="l11"/>considering what inconveniency the Mint lately suffered &amp; may again <lb xml:id="l12"/>suffer by taking in Cutters of Seales into the chief Gravers place, did <lb xml:id="l13"/>upon his succeeding M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del> put a clause into the Indenture then <lb xml:id="l14"/>made between the Crown &amp; himself whereby the Gravers salary of 325<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> <lb xml:id="l15"/>per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> upon the next voydance of the place should cease in order to <lb xml:id="l16"/>a new establishment. For <del type="cancelled">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> H</del> the Roetiers brought up no new gravers <lb xml:id="l17"/>under them &amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Harris who succeeded them being a cutter of seales &amp; <lb xml:id="l18"/>not skilled in that sort of graving <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is proper for the money, imployed <lb xml:id="l19"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Croker to do all th<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">t</add> work for an allowance of 175<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> per <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">an</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> &amp; <lb xml:id="l20"/>retained to himself the remaining 150<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">to himself</del> without <lb xml:id="l21"/>doing any thing for it &amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Croker not being bred up in the service <lb xml:id="l22"/>of the Mint did not <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">well</add> understand it when he first succeeded M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Roetier <lb xml:id="l23"/>but was necessitated for three or four years to copy after M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Roetiers <lb xml:id="l24"/>work, tho now by long p<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>actise he works very well &amp; <del type="over">is</del><add place="over" indicator="no">w</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">e</add> are humbly <lb xml:id="l25"/>of opinion that he is the fittest person to be made first Graver of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l26"/>Mint.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">It is humbly proposed therefore, for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">advantage &amp;</add> security of the coyn <del type="cancelled">again</del> <lb xml:id="l27"/>against counterfeiting, that there should be a set of Gravers constantly <lb xml:id="l28"/>brought up in the Mint, who having once attained to perfection may <lb xml:id="l29"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">do their own work &amp;</add> keep their Art amongst themselves &amp; propagate it to <del type="over">p</del><add place="over" indicator="no">P</add>robationers or <lb xml:id="l30"/>Apprentices &amp; be succeeded by them: &amp; that no <del type="strikethrough">new</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">other</del> new</add> Graver be taken into <lb xml:id="l31"/>the Mint <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or imployed under them</add> unless as a Probationer or Apprentice. For <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> end we humbly <lb xml:id="l32"/>propose that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Croker be <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">now</add> made the first Graver of the Mint <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by a signe Manual</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l33"/><del type="strikethrough">such an augmentation of salary as <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> shall think fit</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">a salary of 200<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice>, if <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lo<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> shall approve thereof,</add> for maintaining <lb xml:id="l34"/>himself &amp; a servant to file &amp; polish the Dyes &amp; <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">pull</unclear></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">turn</add> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>he Press, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; be allowed the use of that part of the Gravers house in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he now lives</add> &amp; that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l35"/>Bull who is now a Probationer <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; has a salary of 60<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> <choice><abbr>p<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>per</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> some other allowances worth about 20<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> a year more <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">as have</unclear></del></add> &amp; works very well be made <del type="over">T</del><add place="over" indicator="no">T</add>he second <lb xml:id="l36"/>Graver <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a Salary <del type="strikethrough">to be also appointed by</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">of 100<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> <choice><abbr>p<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>per</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> if</add> <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice><choice><sic>,</sic><corr type="delText">,</corr></choice> <del type="strikethrough">&amp; a new Probationer</del><add place="supralinear interlinear" indicator="yes">pleases &amp; be allowed the use of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l37"/>other part of the Gravers house and that a new Probationer be</add> <lb xml:id="l38"/>taken into the third place as soon as a fit person shall be met with<del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">,</add> <add place="inline interlinear" indicator="no">&amp; be <lb xml:id="l39"/>allowed in one of the Gravers apartments a room <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> a closet to lodge &amp; work in.</add></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">And as for the <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">other</add> place of Graver of Medals to her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> we are <lb xml:id="l40"/>humbly of opinion that the Gravers of the Mint for the time being

                    are the fitte<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add>t persons to execute it, &amp; that <del type="strikethrough">whenever the Master <lb xml:id="l41"/>of the Mint</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">shall</del></add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">they be obliged by a clause in their <lb xml:id="l42"/>constitution to assit the Master &amp; worker of the Mint whenever he shal</add> receive<del type="cancelled">s any</del> directions about making of Coronation <lb xml:id="l43"/>Medals or others<anchor xml:id="n160r-01"/><note place="p159v" target="#n160r-01">and that they be obliged by a clause in their constitution to <del type="strikethrough">make do</del> <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">assist</add> <lb xml:id="l44"/>the Master &amp; Worker of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint whenever he shall be directed to make <lb xml:id="l45"/>Coronation Medals or others.</note><choice><orig> </orig><reg/></choice><del type="strikethrough">the<del type="cancelled">y</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">said Gravers</del></add> be obliged <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">by a clause in their Constitution</del></add></del>, &amp; that <del type="strikethrough">without asking his <lb xml:id="l46"/>leave</del> they have no authority <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">granted them</add> to use any of the Presses <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">or other tools</del></add> or <add place="inline" indicator="no">to</add> work in any of the <lb xml:id="l47"/>Rooms <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> belong to <del type="strikethrough">his</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the Masters</add> Office for the coynage of Money, without asking his <lb xml:id="l48"/>leave<add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nd that they shall not <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/></del> convey out of the Mint any of the Dyes or Puncheons for making of Medals nor</add> sell Medals at a higher rate then the Warden <lb xml:id="l49"/>Master &amp; Comptroller of the Mint shall allow.</p>
