                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1"><hi rend="large">In</hi> the Indentures of the Mint made Anno 37 Edw. III, An 46 Edw III, An 1 Hen VI, An 11 Edw. IV, <lb xml:id="l1"/>An 1 Rich. III, An 24 Hen VIII, An 1 Edw VI, An 2 Edw VI, An 1 Mar. I mention is made that the Master <lb xml:id="l2"/>and Worker hath found sureties before the King <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in his Chancery</add> that <del type="strikethrough">upon pain thereof</del> he s<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>all make gree to the <lb xml:id="l3"/>Merchants <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in manner &amp; form as is aforesaid</add>. And in the first five Indentures the summ &amp; sureties are named <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">but</add> in the four last <lb xml:id="l4"/>they are not named. The summ named is usually 500<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">In the Indenture made <choice><abbr>An.</abbr><expan>Anno</expan></choice> 2 Elizab. mention is made that the Vnder Treasurer of the <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">M</add>int <lb xml:id="l5"/>hath found sureties before the Queen in Chancery in 100<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> that upon pain thereof he shall make gree <lb xml:id="l6"/>to the Queen &amp; to the Merchant.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">In the Indenture made An 3 Eliz. it is said that the Master &amp; Worker hath bound himself in 500<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> <lb xml:id="l7"/><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> found sureties in other 500<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> that <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">upon pain thereof he shall</add> make gree to the Queen &amp; to the Merchant. The Queen is <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">now</add> joynd <lb xml:id="l8"/>with the Merchant because she recoyned the money of her Predecessors.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">In the Indentures made An 14 Eliz. An. 2 Iac. I, An. 3 Iac I, An. 10 Iac I, An. 2 Car. I An 12 <lb xml:id="l9"/>Car. II <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">An 14 Car II</del></add> An 22 Car II <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">An 36 Car II</del></add> mention is made that the Master &amp; Worker hath found <del type="cancelled">f</del>sureties in the <lb xml:id="l10"/>summ of 2000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> <del type="cancelled">to <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">that upon pain thereof he shall <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></add> make gree to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen &amp; to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Merchant</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">before <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">her or</add> his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> in Chancery</add> that upon pain thereof he shall make <lb xml:id="l11"/>gree to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or King</add> &amp; to the Merchant in manner and form as is <del type="strikethrough">aforesaid.</del> above said</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5">In the Indentures of An <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="3"/> Iac II &amp; An 1 Gul III made to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale who was <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">expensive &amp;</add> in debt <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <del type="strikethrough">of a prodigal <lb xml:id="l12"/>temper</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">a profuse extensive</unclear></del></add> &amp; by <del type="strikethrough">irre<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">gu</add>lar practises</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">indirect means</add> insinuated himself into the Office, there is a covenant that the Master <lb xml:id="l13"/>shall find such Borrows &amp; Sureties in their Majesties Court of Exchequer in such summ as the <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l14"/>of the Treasury or High Treasurer of England for the time being shall approve of that pain there<lb xml:id="l15"/>of he shall make gree to their <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> &amp; to the Merchant <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">in manner &amp; form as is abovesaid</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">accor<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">d</add>ing to the said Indenture</add></add>; &amp; after the passing of the first of those two <pb xml:id="p406r" n="406r"/><fw type="pag" place="bottomLeft">406</fw> Indentures he <del type="strikethrough">found</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">did find</add> sureties in 15000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> but after the passing of the second he found none. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6">Qu. 1. Ought <del type="strikethrough">not</del> the Master of the Mint upon his first beginning to receive the Merchants <lb xml:id="l16"/>Gold &amp; Silver &amp; the Queens money or Bullion to find sureties that he shall make gree to the Queen &amp; <lb xml:id="l17"/>to the Merchant <del type="strikethrough">tho the Indenture of the Mint be not yet sealed or afterwards, &amp; whereought he to <lb xml:id="l18"/><del type="cancelled"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add>i<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">nd</add> sureties</del> do it.</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">or ought he to do it when he makes <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>ath to</del></add> or ought he to do it when the Indenture <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of the Mint is agreed upon &amp;</add> begins to pass the seals or when he makes oath <lb xml:id="l19"/>to it in Ch<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ncery or <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">should he be then bound upon oath</add> <del type="strikethrough">be then taken</del> to do it</add> afterwards, &amp; where ought he to <del type="cancelled">do it.</del> find sureties. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par7">Qu. 2 For making sure that the Master doth find <del type="strikethrough">such</del> sureties is it not fit to mention in the <lb xml:id="l20"/>Indenture that the Master hath found <del type="strikethrough">such</del> sureties so that an Indenture may not be sealed to him <lb xml:id="l21"/><del type="strikethrough">before</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">till</add> he hath found <del type="strikethrough">them sureties</del> them. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="4"/></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par8">Q. 3. Ought the Master to find sureties to Observe <del type="strikethrough">such</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">all the</add> <del type="over">c</del><add place="over" indicator="no">C</add>ovenants of the Indenture <del type="strikethrough">as do not <lb xml:id="l22"/>create an Accompt in money,</del> th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ere</add> being <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>ther punishments proper for the breach of such Cove<lb xml:id="l23"/>nants <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as do not create a debt</add> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> an Oath for the Observance of them <del type="cancelled"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add></del>&amp; no mention in any Indenture of finding such sureties <lb xml:id="l24"/><del type="blockStrikethrough"><del type="strikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>&amp; many of those Covenants respecting the Warden Comptroller</del> &amp; othr Officers none of whi<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>h find <del type="strikethrough">such</del> sureties.<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add></del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no"><choice><orig>[</orig><reg/></choice>&amp; some of the covenants depending on covenants made to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Master.</add> <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/></p>
